Medical and Martial God-Chapter 32: Rescue Blocked
"This disgrace is still alive? I thought he was dead."
"Look at him. He must have had it good these past few years. Seems like reselling medicine and fake medical equipment really paid off."
"Ye Xiu, you medical disgrace! You killed so many people back then, and now you want to come out and harm people again?"
Ming Yue was thrilled. She couldn’t believe how clever she was, having instantly thought of such a brilliant way to antagonize Ye Xiu. Excellent!
"You scumbag! What were you trying to do to my sister just now?" the young man demanded, grabbing Ye Xiu’s clothes again.
"I wanted to save your sister!" Ye Xiu said.
"Bullshit!" the young man cursed. "You’re a heartless doctor! If you ever cared about human life, you wouldn’t have poisoned so many innocent people back then."
The crowd was infuriated by Ye Xiu’s words.
"He must have seen she drives a Porsche and wanted to take the chance to scam her, right?"
"Scum! Disgrace! Ptooey! What rotten luck, running into trash like you today."
"Brother, don’t you dare let him treat your sister, or she’ll be in real danger."
Ye Xiu gave a helpless, wry smile. Even after ten years, the public’s hatred for him remained as fierce as ever.
Back then, Ye Xiu had treated the poor for free and offered the lowest prices for medicine in the entire industry. As a result, the people of the nation revered him like a Bodhisattva. He was respected, adored, even worshipped. However, the deeper the love, the deeper the hate. After he was framed, the masterminds behind it launched an extensive propaganda campaign, turning the nation’s love for Ye Xiu into disgust. The claim that his medicine had poisoned and killed hundreds of people, in particular, had ignited national outrage.
Some say people are quick to forget. But when it came to Ye Xiu, even after a decade, the nation had not forgotten.
"You can curse me all you want," Ye Xiu said sincerely, not bothering to argue. "I truly want to save your sister, and I can. In front of so many people, what tricks could I possibly pull?"
"We don’t need it!" the young man refused without a second thought. "Even if a person like you saved my sister, it would be a lifelong disgrace for her! Get lost!" With that, he shoved Ye Xiu away fiercely.
"Get lost and stop embarrassing yourself here!"
"Trash like you doesn’t deserve to be a doctor, nor to use medical skills!"
"Get lost! If you don’t scram now, I’ll kill you!"
The onlookers shouted angrily, trying to drive Ye Xiu away.
Just then, an ambulance arrived with sirens blaring.
"Doctor! Doctor! Please, quickly, save my daughter! I’m begging you, please save my daughter..." the middle-aged woman screamed at the paramedics running out of the ambulance. Her heart-wrenching anguish was enough to arouse pity and empathy in anyone who saw her.
This is a mother’s love. Ye Xiu’s eyes moistened. His own mother had loved him just as fiercely. But that kind, loving mother had been murdered by those scoundrels.
A medic rushed over and quickly checked the girl’s condition with simple equipment.
"How is my daughter? Doctor, please say something..."
"Please, I’m begging you, save my daughter! I’ll do anything if you just save her, please..." the middle-aged woman pleaded, grabbing one medic’s hand as she knelt on the ground.
"Please calm down, ma’am. Let the doctor finish examining your daughter," the medic tried to console her.
"Okay, okay... you check. I’ll be calm, I’ll be calm. You check, I won’t disturb you..." The middle-aged woman was on the verge of a complete breakdown.
"Sigh..." After a moment, the medic who had examined the girl sighed. "I’m sorry, I’m powerless to help. Your daughter... no longer has a heartbeat."
The middle-aged woman froze, completely dumbfounded. Then she suddenly lunged forward, embraced her daughter, and began to wail, "Song’er! Song’er, wake up! Wake up! Open your eyes and look at Mommy..."
The young man knelt on the ground, his eyes vacant as tears streamed down his tough-looking face. "Song’er, I’m sorry. It’s all my fault. If I hadn’t insisted on taking you out today, this wouldn’t have..."
The agonizing cries of the mother and son tore at the hearts of the onlookers, and soon many of them were crying as well.
"She can still be saved!" a voice suddenly cut through the air.
Almost everyone instantly turned toward the sound.
Seeing that it was Ye Xiu who had spoken, Ming Yue said, "Ye Xiu, are you crazy? After how they treated you, why do you still care? Besides, the doctor said she has no heartbeat..."
"Shut up!" Ye Xiu snapped coldly.
Ming Yue fell silent.
"Let me try," Ye Xiu said, looking sincerely at the middle-aged woman and the young man.
"Divine Doctor Ye! Divine Doctor Ye, please, save my daughter! Save her! I’m begging you, please save her..." the middle-aged woman cried, crawling on her knees to Ye Xiu and grabbing his hands.
"At this point... you can try," the young man sighed.
They no longer cared about Ye Xiu’s medical ethics. The doctor had already declared his sister’s heart had stopped. This was a desperate, last-ditch effort—what harm was there in letting Ye Xiu try? Even the onlookers were silent now, a flicker of hope in their eyes that Ye Xiu might actually be able to save Song’er.
"Ye Xiu, you should think this through!" Ming Yue grabbed his arm as he was about to step forward. "The doctor has already declared Song’er dead. If you can’t revive her, people will blame you for her death."
This wasn’t said for Ye Xiu’s benefit. In fact, she was dying for him to try and save Song’er. The doctor had already said Song’er had no heartbeat; she was a corpse. No matter how great Ye Xiu’s medical skills were, could he really bring the dead back to life? By saying this, Ming Yue was just goading him into trying. That way, she could broadcast far and wide that it was Ye Xiu who had killed Song’er.
"Sir, the girl’s heartbeat has indeed stopped," the medic who had examined Song’er said. "Not even a Daluo Golden Immortal descending from the heavens could save her now."
"Everyone be quiet!" the middle-aged woman shrieked frantically. She trembled as she pulled Ye Xiu’s hand. "Try! Divine Doctor Ye, let’s try! Please, just go look at my daughter. It doesn’t matter if you can save her or not, just try, please try..."
The young man also knelt before Ye Xiu. "Divine Doctor Ye, I’m begging you. Whether you can save my sister or not, I won’t blame you. Please..."
Ye Xiu sighed to himself. Though the mother and son were overwhelmed with grief, they still had their wits about them. He was touched that they could still trust him, a man with a ruined reputation, at a time like this.
He helped the mother and son to their feet and said, "If I say she can be saved, then she won’t die!"
The medic was startled. "Where do you get that confidence?"
"I am Ye Xiu!"
Ye Xiu smiled faintly, walked over to Song’er, and knelt. He gently took her wrist to check her pulse.
The medic froze for a moment. Ye Xiu? That name sounded familiar. Suddenly, his eyes widened in realization. Ye Xiu? The legendary Medicine King Ye Xiu from all those years ago?
He hurriedly leaned in closer, wanting to see with his own eyes how Ye Xiu was going to save her. Although Ye Xiu’s medical ethics were in question, no one doubted his medical skills. The medic hoped he could steal a trick or two.
