Chapter - 262

Rick sat inside the car, trapped with no way to move or escape. His mind raced, searching for options, but nothing seemed feasible. Just then, he heard it—a deep, rumbling roar of a powerful engine in the distance. His eyes narrowed, and a sinking realisation hit him: It was Jed.

He had to act fast. Rick's gaze shifted toward his father, still doubled over on the side of the road, vomiting and visibly suffering from the effects of the tablet. Perhaps the old man had underestimated how strong the nausea would hit him. For a moment, Rick felt a flash of cold anger. His father had planned this—tried to kill him—but now the man looked so weak, so utterly defeated by his own scheme.

Then, out of the corner of his eye, Rick spotted it: a massive Ford Raptor pickup, appearing on the horizon. The rumble of its engine grew louder with each passing second, its silhouette becoming clearer as it hurtled toward them. Rick's heart raced faster. From the distance, he could just make out Jed behind the wheel. The bastard had a wide, malicious grin on his face, a look of devilish satisfaction as though he had already won. His eyes gleamed with murderous intent, a predator closing in on its prey.

Jed thought he had Rick cornered, no way out this time. That grin stretched wider, his bloodlust palpable, and as he drew nearer, Rick could hear his taunting voice in his head, almost like he was speaking aloud: "I've got you this time by your balls. Let's see how you escape now."

With an evil smirk, Jed slammed his foot down on the accelerator, the engine roaring even louder as the truck surged forward, speeding toward Rick and his trapped car.

Seeing the vehicle speeding toward him, its intent clear—ramming him to his death—Rick's instincts kicked in. In a last-ditch effort, he pressed hard on the accelerator and gripped the steering wheel, trying to swerve the car out of the way. But the car groaned under his touch, unresponsive, like a stubborn beast refusing to heed its master's commands. The engine sputtered, but the vehicle remained still, trapped in place.

Rick, frantically pressed the switch for the locks, then trying to manually yank it open. Nothing worked. The windows refused to budge; the doors were sealed tight. He was trapped, every option seemingly blocked.

Rick, thinking fast, decided there was only one option left: he'd have to damage the car to get out. "Well, here goes nothing," he muttered, bracing himself. He pulled his legs up and kicked hard against the door. The car barely moved. Gritting his teeth, he tried again, and again—a third time. But still, nothing happened. The door held firm, as sturdy as ever.

Rick sighed in frustration, slumping back for a moment. "Never thought good build quality would come back to bite me," he grumbled to himself. Determined, he shifted his focus to the front windshield, mentally preparing to smash through it with a solid kick.

Just as he was about to strike, the chime of the system interrupted his thoughts.

Rick's pulse quickened as the quest appeared in front of him, the options lighting up in the system. His heart pounded in his chest, a chaotic mix of fear and anticipation. This was it—the moment that could make or break him. He grinned excitedly, clenching his fists.

"What other option do I have?" he muttered through clenched teeth. "Let's do this. I'm not backing down."

[Quest Accepted: Vengeance Reforged]

The talisman Rick had selected from his inventory began to glow, a faint light at first, but then quickly building up, becoming impossibly bright—like the heart of a burning star. Rick felt the surge of energy, raw and potent, ripple through the air around him. He could feel it, sense it, almost taste the power. He quickly focused it towards Jed's Raptor.

The intense light shot out from the talisman like a focused beam, aimed directly at Jed's truck.

The beam struck Jed's windshield. The once confident grin plastered on Jed's face—a grin filled with the smug satisfaction of someone who thought they had won—immediately twisted into one of confusion. His eyes widened, his head jerking back as the light blinded him.

"What the f—!" Jed shouted, his words cut off as his hands frantically fumbled over the steering wheel, trying to control the massive Ford Raptor. His once arrogant confidence drained from his face. The smirk, the smug certainty, vanished in an instant, replaced by wide-eyed panic.

The blinding light was more than just that—it seemed to mess with his head, his thoughts unravelling into chaos. His movements became clumsy, erratic, as if the light was eating away at his control.

"What the hell is happening?!" Jed screamed, his voice cracking as he tried to regain control of the truck. But it was too late. His vision swirled, confusion clouding his mind like a thick fog. The light seeped into his brain, scrambling his thoughts, making it impossible to focus on anything. His hands turned the steering wheel uncontrollably, causing the truck to swerve violently, missing Rick's car by mere feet.

Rick, watching this unfold from the driver's seat, felt a surge of triumph. His heart raced faster, but this time, it wasn't fear—it was exhilaration. His moment of escape had come, and at the very last second, he had turned the tables.

"Got you, bastard," Rick whispered under his breath, the corner of his mouth curling into a wicked grin. "Let's see who falls to hell now."

Jed, meanwhile, was powerless—his mind dulled by the light, his confidence shattered. As his truck swerved away, he realized, for the first time, that the hunter had become the hunted.

As the Ford Raptor swerved violently, it careened toward the sharp descent of the mountain, a sheer drop-off that loomed ominously ahead. Jed's exhilaration quickly morphed into sheer panic. He had set the stage for a perfect accident, carefully engineered his brakes, so they would fail while hitting Rick, and the police will take it as nothing more than a terrible accident. But now, as he realized he had activated the chip too soon, dread crept into his mind like a shadow. The excitement of killing Rick was fading, replaced by the horrifying reality that he was losing control of the vehicle he believed he could manage.

The brakes, once his insurance policy, had turned against him. The sharp decline loomed closer, and he felt the cold grip of fear tighten around his throat. His confidence evaporated; he was done for. Trembling, he glanced back at Rick's car, wishing for a way to avert disaster, but his body was paralyzed by both the chaos around him and the nausea from the tablet.

Meanwhile, Rick's father, still doubled over on the roadside, glanced up through bleary eyes, just in time to see the massive truck barrelling toward him. His expression shifted from confusion to horror as the reality set in. All he could muster was a pitiful whimper. "No, no, no! What's happening?", His limbs felt heavy, unresponsive, as he tried to scramble away, but his body betrayed him, refusing to move.

As the Raptor thundered closer, it struck a rock outcropping, the crunch of metal against stone ringing through the air like a death knell. In an instant, the truck careened wildly off course, leaving him no chance for escape. Just before impact, he felt an immense pain erupt in his foot—a sickening crunch as the truck struck him, crushing his toes against the unforgiving earth.

"Ahhh!" he screamed, the sound piercing the chaos, echoing off the mountainsides. The pain was blinding, sharper than anything he had ever experienced. But before he could process what was happening, darkness enveloped him, the shock of his injury sending him spiralling into unconsciousness.

The Ford Raptor, plunged over the edge, crashing down the mountainside with a deafening roar. The sound of twisting metal and shattering glass filled the air, followed by a heavy thud as it came to a halt. Smoke billowed from the wreckage, rising toward the sky like a dark omen, twisting into ominous shapes against the fading light.

Rick, still sitting in his car, heard the screeching destruction behind him. He turned, watching the plumes of smoke ascend, his heart racing as the system chimed in.

[Master, Congratulations! But what are you going to do about your father? ]

"Let him be for now! He has tasted the result of his betrayal. If he does not change now, I will make sure he suffers little by little. I can't let him repent all his sins at once, can I?", Rick couldn't help but smirk. For a moment, he felt invincible, like he had turned the tide in a battle which was almost impossible to win. Screw you, Jed, he thought, relaxing back in his seat, adjusting the AC to a comfortable level. The rush of adrenaline began to fade, replaced by a calm sense of victory.

He knew he couldn't get out just yet; soon, the emergency responders would arrive, and it is better if he stays inside a locked car to avoid further suspicions from the police. As he leaned back, he let the reality of the situation sink in, a mix of satisfaction and relief washing over him. The thrill of the escape had made him feel alive.
