Marrying My Bestie's Ferocious Brother - He Calls Me His Baby!-Chapter 41: Mad Dog Bites But No One Cares?
As soon as Mrs. Wang’s voice fell, the noisy chatter in the courtyard seemed to be cut off by an invisible hand, leaving only the sound of the wind rustling through the leaves.
The smug satisfaction on Sister in law Qian and Li’s faces had not yet fully unfolded before it froze at the corners of their mouths. The color drained from their faces, leaving expressions uglier than crying.
"Xiao Lin, this matter is settled, prepare well, and don’t let me down!"
Mrs. Wang affectionately patted Lin Wan Yi’s hand, her gaze swept over Sister in law Qian’s pale face before she turned away contentedly, striding off with her characteristic gait.
As she left, the atmosphere forcibly suppressed in the courtyard immediately began to stir in another way.
"Oh my gosh, Mrs. Wang actually selected someone personally!"
"Lin Wan Yi is really different now!"
"Did you see Sister in law Qian’s face? It’s like she swallowed a green fly!"
The other military wives, who had been watching with folded arms, suddenly gathered around to offer their congratulations with a complete change of attitude.
"Wanyi sister, you’re amazing!"
"Exactly, how do you make that jam? It’s just too delicious!"
Sister in law Xiao Liu, even more excited, squeezed to the front and grabbed Lin Wan Yi’s hand, her eyes reddening with emotion.
"Wanyi sister, you’re truly my benefactor! Look at my face, it’s all healed!"
She pointed to her now flawless cheek, her voice full of irrepressible gratitude.
"My family just smoked some top-notch bacon, and I’ll bring you a piece tomorrow! Please don’t mind it!"
Surrounded by this sudden warmth, Lin Wan Yi kept a gentle smile on her face, responding to each one.
This scene of being surrounded by people was not missed by Sister in law Qian and Li, not far away.
Sister in law Qian’s face went pale and green, and her lips trembled as she cast a fierce glance at Li, as if blaming all her resentment on her companion’s incompetence. She stomped heavily and turned to run back to her own house.
"Bang!"
The short, decisive sound of a door slamming announced her bitter defeat.
Only Li was left standing alone in the courtyard, like an unwanted post. Every gaze, be it sympathetic or mocking, was fixed on her. She looked at Lin Wan Yi, surrounded by people, at the calm smile on her face, and a wicked fire surged from her toes to her head.
Why? Why should this capitalist’s daughter lead such a good life!
Lin Wan Yi bid farewell to the group, picked up a wooden bucket, and turned to walk towards her own home. Her light steps and carefree demeanor completely ignited the tension in Li’s mind.
"Stop right there!"
A shrill, piercing shout came from behind.
Li, like a mad animal, rushed forward in a few steps, spreading her arms to block Lin Wan Yi’s path. This time, she didn’t just use her mouth. She reached out with her bony hand to grab the wooden bucket in Lin Wan Yi’s hand.
"I want to see what bewitching potion you have in this bucket that’s drawing everyone’s soul away!"
Her movements were fast and fierce, her black nails almost scratching Lin Wan Yi’s arm.
A trace of coldness flashed in Lin Wan Yi’s eyes, and she subtly shifted her feet, her wrist turning effortlessly.
Li’s grasp came up empty.
But the wooden bucket seemed to have eyes, slipping gracefully from Lin Wan Yi’s hand and, at a peculiar angle, landed on the ground with a thud. The bucket swayed violently, with large ripples forming in the clear water inside, yet not a drop spilled out.
Gasps could be heard throughout the courtyard.
Li looked at her empty hand, then at the bucket standing firmly on the ground, and was completely stunned.
"Sister Li," Lin Wan Yi’s clear and chilly voice sounded, her gaze not even lingering on Li as it fixed on the bucket on the ground, "The ground is cold, don’t lie down in anger."
The words were light as a feather but carried enough weight to crush Li’s dignity.
"Ah—!"
Li finally snapped, collapsing to the ground like a fishwife at the village entrance, wailing loudly and pounding the ground with her hands.
"There’s no justice! A capitalist’s daughter has come to lord over us, the families of revolutionary soldiers!" Her cries drew more onlookers.
"Don’t be fooled by her! Her jam is nothing good!" Li shrieked with a twisted face, pointing at Lin Wan Yi.
"Do you know why it’s so red? She simmered it with dead rat meat! Where else would that flavor come from?!"
The faces of many in the courtyard changed at these words. Such malice!
"And Xiao Liu, don’t be stupid!" Li continued to point, this time at Sister in law Xiao Liu, "What she gave you is poison! It temporarily makes your face better, but soon it’ll rot inside out! Not even an immortal can save you then!"
Sister in law Xiao Liu was trembling with anger, rushing up to point at Li’s nose and curse, "You’re talking nonsense! How can you be so malicious? If Wanyi sister wanted to harm me, would I still be standing here?"
"Just you wait! You’ll regret it sooner or later!" Li cursed madly.
However, this time, no one echoed her words. The military wives, frightened by her madness and venom, instinctively backed away, creating distance.
Hiding behind her window, Sister in law Qian watched this scene with a flash of fear in her eyes. Instead of coming out to help, she quickly drew the curtains.
The entire courtyard was left with Li alone on the ground, her crying and cursing becoming increasingly desperate.
At this moment.
A steady, powerful set of footsteps with a unique rhythm approached from a distance.
Thud, thud, thud.
Each step felt like it landed on everyone’s chest. The bustling courtyard instantly fell silent, and everyone looked towards the sound.
At the entrance of the courtyard, Gu Yanshen’s tall and upright figure walked against the light, step by step. His military uniform was impeccably neat, bearing the chill of the evening on his shoulders, like a freshly unsheathed sword, exuding an intimidating sharpness.
The ranting Li’s voice got stuck in her throat.
Gu Yanshen stopped. He didn’t speak.
He only stared coldly and unflinchingly at Li, still sitting on the ground, with those eyes that had been on the battlefield and soaked in blood. There was no emotion, just an empty, strong indifference, as if looking at an inanimate object.
The air in the courtyard felt as if it had been vacuumed.
Under such scrutiny, Li’s blood ran inch by inch cold. The terror from the night she was scared into incontinence, mixed with her cold sweat, swept over her body. Her teeth chattered uncontrollably, making a "clack clack" sound.
"I... I... didn’t..." She tried to explain, but found her throat felt as if it was blocked by cement, unable to utter a word.
Gu Yanshen slowly withdrew his gaze, as if even looking at her more was dirtying his eyes.
He took long strides, walking straight through the courtyard, passing the quivering Li without a second glance.
He stopped in front of Lin Wan Yi.
Under the curious and fearful eyes of everyone in the courtyard, he unbuttoned his military coat. The large, thick coat, carrying his body warmth and icy aura, unfolded, enveloping Lin Wan Yi from head to toe without giving her a chance to argue.
The petite figure was instantly wrapped within his embrace, leaving only a pair of bright, slightly startled eyes visible. His clean soap scent, along with his unique masculine presence, enveloped her, shutting out all malice.
The entire courtyard was silent enough to hear a pin drop.
Gu Yanshen tightened his hold on the person in his arms a little more and turned his head. His gaze swept over Li’s ashen face and those peeking from behind doors and windows.
A voice, not loud but as heavy as a stone, fell on everyone’s heart, resonating through the entire courtyard.
"I indulge her; any objections?"
