Chapter 117: Hostile Tension

Sage ran out of the castle, breathing heavily, and smiled relievedly as her eyes met Katherine’s widened ones.

"Katherine!" She yelled as she dashed down the stairs.

Katherine was perched atop a massive black dragon with sharp golden reptile eyes. Her eyes widened as she saw her friend, who was stunning and overjoyed to see her.

She jumped off the dragon, almost tripping over herself, but Sage arrived in time and embraced her tightly before she fell.

Katherine returned the hug without hesitation, closing her eyes. "Sage! I have missed you terribly." She expressed herself.

"I have missed you too, Katherine. So much has happened, I do not know where I should start from." Sage’s eyes welled up with tears, and she closed them tightly to keep the tears from streaming out. She took a deep breath and hugged her friend tightly as they remained in the position for a long time.

With everyone around her lying to her, Lianna, Julius, Dexter, and even her own mother Genevieve lying to her, and Darren obviously keeping a huge secret from her, Sage believed Katherine was the only one who could not hurt her.

Before meeting Darren, she and Katherine had grown up together, fighting alongside and protecting each other.

Sage kept her emotions from exploding, despite her best efforts to keep her tears at bay. She didn’t want her emotions to ruin the grand breakfast that morning.

She swallowed and opened her eyes, feeling Katherine tighten the hug, revealing how much she missed Sage as much as Sage missed her.

Her gaze was drawn to the black dragon, and her eyes widened as she recognized him as the dragon from Credia. He was the one who was constantly crashing into the castle and attacking Cyrus.

Sage gasped and pulled away from the hug.

At that moment, Cyrus walked out of the castle with a dull expression, Ashton with a bright smile on his face, and a tired Arthur.

Sage frowned deeply as her eyes narrowed at the dragon and Katherine was taken aback by her reaction.

"Are you alright?" Katherine inquired, both curiously and concernedly.

"Are you Prince River?" Sage asked, unconcerned about hiding her rage, and the dragon closed his eyes.

Katherine looked at the dragon as he transformed into his human form, perplexed.

On his gleaming attractive face was a radiant smile. He was a tall, slender man with long dark brown hair with golden tips and sparkling hazel gray eyes.

"I am, Queen Sage Dragos," he replied with a slight bow, causing Sage’s lips to twitch in disbelief.

Katherine’s brow furrowed in surprise at Sage’s animosity toward River. "Do you know who he is?" She asked Sage.

Sage looked at Katherine and took her hands in hers. "Come with me; we will eat breakfast together." With a smile, she said.

Katherine gave a nod. "I have a lot to tell you." She sighed deeply and said.

"I do as well." Sage exhaled a long sigh.

"Ugh! Such depressing sighs for this lovely reunion." The ladies turned their attention to Ashton as he groaned lazily.

When Katherine saw Cyrus, she frowned deeply, and Sage immediately sensed her dislike for Cyrus. "I am surprised he hasn’t killed you." As Cyrus’ eyes changed into their silver reptile form and sharpened dangerously, Katherine grumbled and moved closer to Sage.

"Cyrus.."

"Do not call my name, River Viadislav," Cyrus cut in, glaring at him murderously. "You are well aware that I am not pleased to see you." Cyrus continued with a deep hiss.

River lowered his head and smiled. "Of course you aren’t," he muttered, raising his head and looking at Ashton, who was still smiling brightly.

"Oh, the demon has returned." River expressed his displeasure openly.

"Oh, the ambitious moron didn’t bring his sister," Ashton scoffed, crossing his arms across his chest and smiling.

"What?!" River growled and took a step towards Ashton, but Katherine pulled her hands away from Sage and grabbed his arm.

"Don’t. I am sure he is only joking." He held himself back from punching the grinning demon as she whispered softly.

"She is smart." Ashton teased.

Sage noticed something between River and Katherine and looked at Cyrus, who seemed to be completely focused on her.

When their gazes met, his silver reptile-like eyes instantly transformed into ice blue. "Are you still interested in breakfast?" Cyrus inquired calmly.

"Is there any reason why I should not?" Sage inquired, and he smirked in response, earning a smile from her.

Katherine and River stared in awe at the couple, while Ashton chuckled deeply and looked at Arthur, who appeared tired.

Sage shifted her gaze away from Cyrus and toward Katherine, who let go of River’s arm.

"I will help you prepare," Sage said excitedly as she grabbed Katherine’s arm. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎

Katherine trailed behind, giggling, as the men watched the ladies run up the stairs and into the castle.

There was silence between them as they stared in the direction Sage and Katherine had gone. Strong-looking guards who stood like statues on either side of the door stood guard.

While Ashton was enjoying the hostile tension between Cyrus and River, Arthur didn’t want to get involved and ended up clearing his throat loudly, breaking the silence and drawing everyone’s attention to him.

"Please excuse me," he bowed his head and laughed. Then he left them to enter the castle as well.

Ashton laughed loudly and placed his hands on Cyrus’ and River’s shoulders. "I have known you two since you were kids; I m sure you will work things out or kill yourselves." He paused with a burst of laughter before clearing his throat dramatically as Cyrus and River looked at him. "Ugh! I will be happy either way, but I really want to see some blood." He then tapped their shoulders and walked away, into the castle.

Cyrus sighed deeply and put his hands in his pockets before looking at River with a dull expression. He cocked his head to the side, his lips twitching in amusement. "Did you get stabbed?" He asked, pulling a pale green pearl from his pocket and pointing to River.

River nodded and smiled. "How the hell do you know?" He inquired and obtained the pearl. "Don’t I look as healthy as you?" He inquired, waved it at Cyrus, and placed it in his mouth.

"Experience." Cyrus hissed and chewed his lower lip.
