Love at First Sight? Mr. Harrison Has Been Scheming All Along-Chapter 251: "Is That Evan Hollis President Harrison’s Brother?
Charlotte Rhodes complained, "Sean Harrison is just a businessman. So he has some money. What contribution has he ever made to the country or society?"
Rory Linden explained with a smile:
"Just because you don’t pay attention to President Harrison doesn’t mean he hasn’t done anything. Not long ago, he established a foundation at the hospital to help children whose families can’t afford medical treatment, giving many of them new hope."
"All businessmen are the same. They set up these foundations to avoid taxes. They’re all just helping themselves under the guise of charity."
Charlotte Rhodes came from a wealthy background, so of course she knew what donating meant for a company.
Not only could it win public favor, but it also allowed for tax exemptions.
’If Charlotte Rhodes weren’t my patient,’ Rory Linden thought, ’I’d really want to ask her what contributions *she’s* made to society and the country after all these years of living a pampered life.’
Rory Linden could only say, "I’m sorry, Auntie Rhodes, but these are the conditions at our hospital. If you’re not satisfied, the ambulance is still outside. You can transfer back to Elysian Hospital right now."
’Maybe it’s because I’m a mother now.’
She found Charlotte Rhodes’s actions even more incomprehensible.
’If Sean Harrison were truly good-for-nothing, it would be one thing. But from what I’ve learned, he seems to be a decent son, at the very least.’
Charlotte Rhodes’s brow was furrowed.
Even though she was weak, it was clear she was extremely dissatisfied with her current situation.
Rory Linden didn’t understand. ’If she’s going to be this picky, why insist on me doing her surgery?’
’She can’t be planning to set me up, can she?’
Evan Hollis spoke first. "Auntie Rhodes, President Harrison must have gone to a lot of trouble to get you this room. Let’s just stay here for now. Your health is the most important thing, after all. Let’s get the surgery done first."
Rejection was written all over Charlotte Rhodes’s face.
It was as if she was unwilling to accept even the slightest bit of help from Sean Harrison.
The stalemate lasted for a long time.
Charlotte Rhodes still didn’t relent.
Seeing this, Evan Hollis asked Rory Linden, "Dr. Linden, are there any double or single rooms downstairs?"
"There’s one double room."
Jason Stone answered.
Only then did Evan Hollis say, "Auntie Rhodes, would it be okay to stay in the double room? I’ll be here around the clock to take care of you. I’ll only go home twice a week at most."
Charlotte Rhodes grasped Evan Hollis’s hand, her face full of apology. "I’m sorry to put you through this."
Rory Linden was speechless.
’She was the one who insisted on transferring, so how did it end up looking like I was the one who forced her to?’
After getting Charlotte Rhodes settled, the group left the hospital room.
Jason Stone asked Rory Linden, somewhat unhappily, "Did you tell the patient to transfer?"
"It wasn’t her," the director spoke up for her. "I know Old Hawthorne from Elysian Hospital. He said the patient was the one who insisted on transferring."
Jason Stone was furious. "If she’s going to transfer, she should follow the arrangements! So many complaints. Does she think a public hospital is a private one?!"
In all her time at Celestria University Affiliated Hospital, this was the first time Rory Linden had seen Jason Stone so angry.
But then again, anyone would be angry in this situation.
"Director Hawthorne and I both tried to persuade her. We even explicitly stated that Director Hawthorne is a better surgeon than I am, but she still insisted on transferring here."
Rory felt at a loss for words as she said this.
Jason Stone said, "Was it her who wanted to transfer? The way I see it, it was that ’son’ of hers who wanted her to move."
Once this topic was raised, no one was paying attention to what Jason Stone was saying anymore.
The director looked at Rory Linden. "Dr. Linden, is that Evan Hollis President Harrison’s brother?"
Sean Harrison had gone to great lengths to transfer Charlotte Rhodes and find her a room.
Everyone had thought it would be a touching scene of a loving mother and her filial son.
But to their surprise, Charlotte Rhodes was completely unappreciative.
"No." Fearing the director would press for more details, Rory Linden said, "I’m not clear on their family’s situation, but it looks like Evan Hollis will be the one taking care of Auntie Rhodes for the time being."
Wealthy families were always full of drama.
The group stopped asking.
For the next few days, Evan Hollis, true to his word, stayed at the hospital almost around the clock.
During the day, he would chat with the old woman; at night, he would wash her feet and give her a simple sponge bath.
When he got tired, he would spread a mat on the floor. He was a light sleeper, so if she needed to get up in the middle of the night, he would wake up immediately, never once complaining.
All of this came from the other patient in Charlotte Rhodes’s room.
When the elderly woman chatted with patients from other rooms about Evan Hollis, she was full of nothing but praise.
"I’ve lived a long life, and I’ve never seen such a good kid. She must have done something right in a past life to deserve a son like that!"
The elderly patient in the same room didn’t know Charlotte Rhodes’s true identity.
She simply assumed Evan Hollis was her only son.
Thanks to this elderly patient’s enthusiastic promotion, Evan Hollis’s reputation as a model son spread throughout the entire cardiology department in just three days.
「On the third day.」
Rory Linden came back from the outpatient clinic in the afternoon to do her rounds.
She saved Charlotte Rhodes’s room for last, briefly asking about the older woman’s condition.
As she was leaving the room, Evan Hollis chased after her.
"Dr. Linden, you said before that she shouldn’t drink too much water, but Auntie Rhodes has been very thirsty lately. Is there anything we can do...?"
He quickly added, "I’ve been cutting up as much fruit as I can for Auntie Rhodes every day, but she still says she’s thirsty."
During rounds the past few days, Evan Hollis had been calling Charlotte Rhodes "Mom" in the hospital room. Only now that the two of them were alone did he switch back to "Auntie."
Rory Linden couldn’t be bothered with these matters and just said:
"She can hold the water in her mouth for a bit longer, or you can go to the convenience store and buy a plain old popsicle. Either will work."
"Okay, thank you." Evan Hollis thanked her, then added casually, "I heard from the nurses that you have the day off tomorrow, is that right?"
"...Yes, but I’ll still come in to do my rounds, so don’t worry."
Rory Linden said.
She walked to the nurses’ station, where a nurse stopped her. "Dr. Linden, is that Evan Hollis guy President Harrison’s brother?"
"I’m not sure."
Rory Linden really couldn’t explain.
She was well aware of the relationship between Charlotte Rhodes and Evan Hollis, but their behavior in the hospital was clearly intended to make others think they were mother and son.
Charlotte Rhodes was a patient, and she was undergoing a major surgery to implant a mechanical heart.
’I just pray her surgery is successful and she can be discharged without any issues. Everything else is outside the scope of my responsibility.’
The nurse didn’t seem to mind his status. "But I think that Evan Hollis is a pretty great guy. He’s good to his mother, and he’s friendly to us, too." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
Rory Linden didn’t respond, just waved her hand. "I’m heading home for the day."
It didn’t get dark until late in the summer.
When she walked out of the inpatient department, the sky wasn’t completely dark yet.
A streak of magenta-blue, tinged by the sunset glow, painted the horizon.
The shadows of the trees at the entrance of the inpatient department were stretched long, and Sean Harrison, standing under one of them, cast a long, slender silhouette.
"President Harrison, are you here to see Auntie Rhodes?"
For the first time, Rory was actually glad to see him.
She wanted to tell him not to bother going up to see Charlotte Rhodes.
