Love at First Sight? Mr. Harrison Has Been Scheming All Along-Chapter 177: Glad to Have Met You, Hope to Never See You Again
After sending the message, Rory Linden stared at her phone.
If this had been the past, the moment he got news like this, he would have contacted her immediately.
He might have even shown up at her side in an instant.
But today, she waited and waited, until her eyelids grew heavy and she drifted off to sleep without even realizing it...
「The next day.」
The alarm rang.
The very first thing Rory Linden did was grab her phone to check for messages.
Her messaging app was empty. Aside from a few automated promotional messages, there was nothing.
And no word from Sean Harrison.
It was as if...
this had nothing to do with him at all.
Rory Linden thought to herself, ’Maybe...’
’Maybe he’s just too busy and hasn’t seen it.’
’In any case, he should at least tell me we’re breaking up, right?’
’What’s with this confusing radio silence?’
After breakfast, Rory Linden took a folic acid tablet, carefully tucked the lab report and ultrasound scan between the pages of a medical book, and then left for work.
Today, she was scheduled to assist Keith Hawthorne in two surgeries.
She was busy from morning until past nine at night.
She returned to her office to change, bundled herself up tightly in a thick, long down jacket, and then headed for the elevators.
Just as she reached the lobby on the first floor of the inpatient ward.
There, in the empty lobby, was a familiar figure.
It had been a while.
The last time they’d seen each other was back in November.
Veridia hadn’t been this cold, and she hadn’t been wearing such a thick down jacket.
Rory Linden shoved her hands into her jacket pockets, her fingers lightly shielding her stomach from inside, took a deep breath, and then walked quickly toward him.
Hearing the footsteps, Sean Harrison looked over.
It was already nine o’clock at night. There was no moon, and the sky was shrouded in a hazy fog.
When he looked at her, his dark eyes were even more distant and indifferent than the night itself.
It was as if the person standing before him wasn’t the girlfriend he’d been dating for months.
But rather...
a stranger.
That one look was enough to extinguish the tiny spark of hope that had just been kindled in Rory Linden’s heart.
She even...
subconsciously took a step back.
’Then again, what more did I need to know? We haven’t spoken in over half a month.’
’Why was I so insistent on getting a formal breakup?’
In that moment, Rory Linden was filled with regret.
Sean Harrison stood up, his dark eyes sweeping over Rory Linden from head to toe.
He was a good twenty centimeters taller than Rory, and his gaze was completely condescending as he looked down at her, devoid of any emotion.
After a moment of silence, he finally asked, "You’re pregnant?"
"..."
Rory Linden didn’t dare to meet his eyes.
She knew she had always been a terrible liar.
She wouldn’t even have to open her mouth; a single glance would be enough for him to see through her lies.
"Are you?"
the man pressed.
His voice was chilling, devoid of any emotion.
Rory Linden bit her lip hard. After a few seconds of internal struggle, she finally looked up at him and uttered two words: "I am."
As the words left her lips, her gaze was fixed on his face.
She wanted to see what kind of expression he would have.
Would there be a flicker of joy?
But upon hearing her answer, Sean Harrison’s brow furrowed in clear annoyance. Then he uttered two words: "Abort it."
The words were ice-cold, like a bucket of frigid water dumped over her head.
They completely extinguished the last tiny flame of hope in her heart.
Rory Linden didn’t know anything about microexpressions, but she could clearly read the annoyance and irritation on his face.
It was as if what she carried wasn’t his child, but a burden.
He seemed to have absolutely no anticipation for this child—for *their* child.
"..."
"I’ll call the hospital director right now, get a doctor, and have the procedure done immediately."
Sean Harrison immediately pulled his phone from his pocket and began scrolling through his contacts.
"I was lying to you!"
Rory Linden suddenly yelled.
She looked at his face and repeated, "I was lying."
Sean Harrison’s thumb froze on his screen. His dark eyes shifted to her face.
He had told her countless times that she was a bad liar.
Rory Linden forced herself to forget she was pregnant. She met his eyes and said, "I just wanted to see you. Why wouldn’t you see me? Why haven’t you been answering my calls?"
"..."
"What is all this? Are we breaking up?"
There were nurses on duty in the lobby, and their gazes were all drawn in their direction.
They were quietly enjoying the drama.
Rory Linden gave a helpless laugh. "Sean Harrison, you’re a real coward. You started this relationship without a proper confession, and now you don’t even have the guts to tell me we’re breaking up. What’s your game? Or wait, in your eyes, did we never even begin?"
Sean Harrison’s eyes were locked on Rory Linden. "You’re not pregnant?" he asked.
"We’re in a hospital, and the ER is open. A pregnancy test isn’t some complicated procedure. No need to make a big scene. All it takes is a simple blood draw."
Rory Linden started walking toward the entrance. "If you don’t believe me, let’s go get it checked right now," she said.
Sean Harrison followed right behind her.
Rory Linden picked up her pace toward the ER, her heart pounding in her chest...
’What if...’
’What if Sean Harrison actually makes me go through with the test?’
’What if he really forces me to abort the baby?’
In that moment, Rory Linden realized how desperately she wanted to keep this child.
Rory Linden was just about to step into the emergency room...
"Never mind," Sean Harrison’s voice came from behind her. "I’ll have my driver take you home."
Rory Linden let out a long, silent breath of relief.
But she didn’t dare let her guard down.
"That’s not necessary." Rory Linden turned to face Sean Harrison. "I just wanted to ask you—not answering my calls, not coming home... does that mean we’re broken up?"
"Yes."
That single word was enough to make Rory Linden’s heart turn to ash.
Veridia was so cold in December.
The wind whistled through the gaps between buildings, so cold that Rory felt her heart itself was trembling uncontrollably.
She wanted to ask him, ’Can you at least tell me why?’
But she knew it was pointless.
If he’d wanted to talk, they never would have gotten to this point.
Rory Linden walked toward Sean Harrison, stopping about a meter away from him.
She looked up, her gaze tracing his perfect features.
Even now, she still felt that being with him meant she was punching way above her weight.
"Sean Harrison," Rory Linden began, waiting until he looked at her. "You’re a good person. You deserve a better, purer love. I’m sure there’s someone out there who will love you with her whole heart. I hope you meet her soon. I wish you... all the best."
He just stood there a meter away, listening to her quietly.
He didn’t respond.
Rory Linden had no desire to guess what he was thinking.
She took a step back and bowed deeply. "Mr. Harrison, thank you for your care over this period. I’ll move out within the week."
"You don’t have to move out," he said. "That apartment, the deeds to the other properties in the safe, and everything else can be your compensation. I’ll have my lawyer contact you in a few days to handle the transfer of ownership."
"There’s no need. None of your things suit me, Mr. Harrison. And I don’t like them." Rory Linden forced a smile. "Let’s leave it at that. It was nice knowing you. I hope we never see each other again."
Rory Linden walked quickly to the hospital entrance and hailed a passing taxi.
Sitting in the taxi, she stared out the window, remembering how just a month ago she had resolved to try her best and one day win him over completely.
She never thought *this* day would come so quickly.
