Chương 410: Third and seventh

The pleasant aroma of coffee filled the area as steam rose up from the cup. Shaking the cup in his hand, Kairen stared at its contents dazedly, as if being drowned in the hot liquid.

"Didn't you say the previous cup was the last?"

At Reyan's question, Kairen rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand.

"I'm still sleepy thought."

"Then sleep?"

"No."

Reyan shook his head as if disappointed and walked away from his half-asleep, half-awake friend. Kairen was genuinely scared of being pulled into another memory, so he resisted falling asleep with all his might.

'Anyway, how long will this break last?'

Breaking out of the hospital wasn't hard at all. They only needed to ask Claire to create a portal and jump into it. The problem was that the distance between the hospital at the capital and The Temple of Dawn was pretty long, and their numbers were high, making it impossible for them to go there in one try. Claire had to create short-distance portals to not exhaust herself too much, so they had to stop multiple times on their way.

As per Kairen's request, they stopped by a small city to buy coffee and some snacks, as he was sleepy and hungry. They had to repeat the same thing again and again each time he demanded something.

"Alright, let's go. Two more stops and we are there!"

At the girl's call, everyone gathered together to step into the gate once again. After two brief breaks, they found themselves in a desolate location. Nothing could be seen in the area, not even a passing animal was there.

"It's here," Kairen announced as he began walking in a specific direction. The others looked around in confusion, wondering where he was going and what he meant. Only Allan was silently following along, with a deep frown on his face and lips pressing in anxiety.

'It should be somewhere around here...'

Kairen knew the approximate location of the device. It was both because of Roy's explanations and also his memories of the past, of a time he came here all alone to build a fourth device to complete his mister's plans, the mister who left him all alone and disappeared to thin air.

Kairen didn't know about The Temple of Dawn but of the machine inside it. He was the one who assembled it, thus he knew better than others how it functioned, although he couldn't admit that he was the one who created something that took the lives of so many people.

Kairen preferred to forget this piece of information, to erase the memory of how Reynold ventured on a journey to find the exact spot connecting the three structures they'd built and set up a fourth device in there, which was later abused by a madman to murder humans for his goals.

'The temple appears when exposed to Chaos...And I have chaos in my soul.'

That was a conclusion he reached after putting every piece of information together.

"Stand as far away as you can."

Raising his hands, Kairen took a deep breath before activating his power. Silver and gold lights blended, creating a splendid view of various tiny sparks shimmering in the air like small bits of electricity.

Right upon the creation of the speculating view, a flash of white appeared out of nowhere and the next instant, a whole new scene lay in front of their eyes. A large and tall building, beautiful as it could be, dazzling like a holy cathedral, emerged in the empty plain, shifting the atmosphere of the area to that of shock and awe.

"Wow..."

"This... Actually looks pretty holy..."

Kairen agreed with them. This temple, by just being there, gave off a feeling of serenity and holiness he had never felt anywhere before. If he hadn't known about its history and purpose, he would've fallen for its looks, believing that the religion it served must be a decent one. And also, if he wasn't able to see the blood splashed all around the inner walls of the building.

"...."

Kairen could feel Alan's halted breaths from behind. He didn't know what kind of face the man was making, but he knew that it mustn't be a calm one.

"...Their corpses are gone..."

At the man's hollow whisper, Kairen couldn't help but think of a theory. He didn't hesitate to state it out loud for Alan to hear, hoping that it would soothe his nerves a little bit.

"The temple probably hides in a specific location in The Void. The Void doesn't allow materials inside unless some actions are done on them in order to link them to The Void, or if they have been touched by universal powers. The temple was probably made out of such materials, while I doubt the generals' bodies were important enough for The Holy Saint to care much about them."

Kairen took a step closer to the temple, the blood stains splashed all over the walls, and signs of conflict became even clearer in his eyes.

"That must've created an opposition, pushing their corpses out of The Void and back to their original location, however, they each carried an artifact, deeply drenched in universal energies, staining their bodies and souls. This probably changed the trajectory of their return, shifting them back to a location that had close ties with the owner's power."

"...."

Alan's initial question of how he knew about the fate of the generals changed to something else.

"Do you mean... the temples?"

Kairen gave a nod to his head.

"But... It's impossible!" The golden-haired man took a large step to arrive in front of Kairen. "I-I've searched through those locations. There was nothing there. Not even a trace of them. I'm sure I've looked everywhere!"

The young boy shrugged his shoulders, shaking a head.

"Someone must've arrived at those locations sooner than you and hidden those artifacts, for his future plans or just for fun. Who knows? It's just a guess."

A guess that sounded incredibly probable for the two of them.

"....."

Alan closed his mouth, lowering his head. He didn't say anything else nor looked at the temple again as if unable to take in the scene anymore.

"Stay here, don't follow me."

His words were mostly directed at his brother, whom he knew wouldn't easily allow him to enter the temple.

"Ren-"

"I'll be back soon."

"Wait wait!"

Aaron grabbed his little brother's arm, stopping him from approaching the holy-looking, yet eery temple.

"What if something happens when you are busy in there? Huh? Let me keep an eye on you, okay? I won't interfere."

"It'll be dangerous in there for anyone except for me once I use my power."

Kairen peeked at a single strange device set at the center of the temple. The machine was damaged, and some parts of it were broken, however, the core part of it remained intact. Kairen knew how to fix it, as the one who initially created it.

After inspecting Roy's plan more, Reynold found some loops on it. What the man wanted to create was like a barrier, something to fend off the wave of chaos moving to this world. The wave has become like a devourer of worlds, destroying everything on its wage and erasing world after world, and Roy wanted to put an end to it.

As someone affected by universal powers, Roy was like a target to the wave, attracting it wherever he went. After being thrown away from his erased planet, Roy found himself in a new life in a new world. He hadn't completely adjusted to it when the place got eaten up by chaos and the man was sent to another place. He was forced to switch worlds again and again, not knowing what to do to end this struggle.

This was the conclusion he reached after seeing so many worlds' ends, to build up a barrier using the very same power that attached the world, to fend it off. However, the barrier he intended to build wouldn't be as sturdy as he intended throughout the whole planet, thicker near the designed three machines, and thinner outside the boundary of the triangular shape of the connection of the three structures. A net of structures needed to be built in set distances in the entire planet to secure a proper shield, which was an impossible task at that time and age.

Another way was to make sure that the wave would strike the thicker portion of the said shield. If they could divert a part of it, the whole danger might go away. Roy had done it through calculations, but that still wasn't enough according to what Reynold concluded.

After thinking about it for as long as he could, an idea flashed in his head: To force the wave to come to their desired location. If the wave of chaos was attracted to the person with the highest amount of unnatural energies in their souls, then wouldn't it come to that person, or that thing first? So if he created a machine and stuffed all his power in it, and placed it at the central spot of the triangle made of the three structures, where the protection was the highest, the wave would crash against the strongest part of the shield, increasing their chances of success.

Kairen took his eyes off the said device and looked back at his brother.

"It'll be alright. Nothing can enter that area anyway once the device is activated.

"But still!"

"Hey, let's finish everything already."

Gates were still floating in the air, a temple of ancient times was summoned back to their world, and a crazy man might be watching them from afar or up close. They had to take care of things as soon as possible.

A dissatisfied frown formed on Aaron's face.

"I'll rush in there if things go wrong," he let go of his brother's arm, unwillingly. "Don't get hurt."

Kairen nodded at his brother's soft whisper.

"I won't."
