Legendary FBI Detective-Chapter 112: The Thief
Seeing the old forensic doctor's action, Mona's eyes lit up beside Luo An:
"Did you really find something?"
"No, found nothing."
The old forensic doctor took off his mask, picked up the coffee cup beside him, and took a leisurely sip:
"No alcohol was found, no drugs, and no unknown substances either—just a slightly high cholesterol level."
"..."
Hearing this, Mona's eyelids twitched, and then she glared fiercely at him.
The old forensic doctor chuckled carelessly.
Mona was about the same age as his daughter; the previous comment was just the old forensic doctor's habitual way of making a joke to tease others.
"This is good news, Mona."
Luo An, on the other hand, wasn't angry and looked up smilingly at the old forensic doctor:
"So this suggests Ivande simply died in a car accident, right?"
"The most common kind of car accident."
Pleased with Luo An's attitude, the old forensic doctor nodded with a smile:
"The kind that's totally unoriginal."
Mona also realized by now.
For someone to die in a car accident is indeed a sad affair, but for them at the FBI, the fact that the person truly died in an accident is actually good news.
Their purpose for this visit was to confirm that the death was indeed accidental.
"Thank you for your assessment."
Luo An smiled and reached out to shake hands with the old forensic doctor, then asked:
"By the way, when Ivande was brought here, were there some personal belongings with him? We need to check out the laptop among them."
"They're all in the office next door."
The old forensic doctor put down his coffee cup with a smile, got up from the autopsy room, and led the two to a bookshelf near the left-side office.
Seconds later, the old forensic doctor's brows furrowed, and his voice turned somewhat stiff:
"Gentlemen, it seems someone has taken this gentleman's personal belongings."
"What?"
Upon hearing this, Mona's expression turned grim and Luo An began to carefully survey the office:
"Is there any surveillance footage here?"
"There isn't any in the office."
The old forensic doctor first shook his head, then nodded and quickly stepped out of that office, heading towards the morgue across the autopsy room:
"But there is a camera at the entrance of the morgue."
Minutes later, the surveillance footage from the morgue's hallway-facing door appeared on Mona's computer.
One could see a crew-cut Caucasian wearing the same uniform as the old forensic doctor, but without a mask, walking slowly into the office. Thirty-odd seconds later, the crew-cut Caucasian left the office swaggeringly with a bag in hand.
The footage was quite clear, and Luo An and Mona saw that the crew-cut Caucasian had taken Ivande's laptop.
"Shit!"
Having watched the video, the old forensic doctor suddenly burst out angrily.
Seeing Luo An's gaze turn towards him, the old forensic doctor immediately waved his hands:
"That guy isn't from our department! I've worked here for decades and I've never seen him!"
Hearing this, Luo An first exchanged a glance with Mona, then let out a sigh:
"I knew it. This case isn't that simple."
——
Team Five's investigation area, inside the team leader's office.
"So, this case really wasn't an accident?"
Seeing Augustus close his eyes and raise his right hand to rub his temples, Luo An also looked troubled, spreading his hands:

"It's highly unlikely it was an accident. No thief would go into an NYPD autopsy room to steal things."
"OK, I will report this to Vireness."
Augustus was silent for a moment, then raised his head to look at Luo An and asked:
"What's your plan next? Got any ideas?"
"Mona has already extracted the individual from the video and is currently doing facial recognition."
Luo An took a sip of his coffee, then said:
"The car that Ivande was in that got into an accident will be delivered to the Jacob Federal Building in thirty minutes. I'll go inspect it closely, maybe there will be some clues there."
"Good."
Augustus nodded satisfactorily, fell silent for a moment, then suddenly slapped his forehead and said to Luo An with a smile:
"Just now, Reesi called me. That Ogden has been caught by her and Lade, and they are expected to return in half an hour.
Once this Ogden is brought to court, the bounty of $400,000 will be issued to you guys."
Upon hearing this, Luo An instantly revealed a smile:
"Thank you, Chief. I will relay this message to Reesi and the others."
After briefly continuing the conversation, Luo An stood up and left the team leader's office.
Slumping back into his own seat, Luo An moved his chair closer to Mona, just about to speak, when Mona pointed at the computer and said directly:
"I've already looked into Ivande's recent business trip.
He was invited by the military to take photos of soldiers at a certain port, for use in newspaper promotions.
The entire process was recorded, Ivande was very compliant throughout, and there were no signs of suspicious activity, so this car accident should be unrelated to that trip."
Hearing the word "military," Luo An's eyebrows twitched, instinctively thinking of the story of the $6 million and the nine sheep.
Shaking his head to cast aside the thoughts, Luo An asked:
"What about the identity of the thief?"
"NO."
Mona stopped typing, stretched her arms behind her head vigorously, and said while shaking her head:
"The guy has no criminal record, and none of the nearby prisons have his identity.
Not only that, I just checked the surveillance footage outside and inside the NYPD, but didn't spot the person on them."
"Not even inside the police station?"
Luo An asked, his brows furrowed.
"None."
Mona also spoke with a grave expression:
"The person only appeared once in the surveillance footage outside the morgue.
And I didn't find any evidence of the video being tampered with or erased."
What that implied was that the cropped-haired white man in the video had somehow evaded most of the police in the station.
Hearing this, Luo An's expression changed slightly, leaning back in his chair, arms crossed over his chest, staring intently at the cropped-haired white man in the video:
"This case may be deeper than we thought..."
——
Jacob Federation Building, Forensic Examination Department's large space.
The car involving Ivande's accident was finally brought here, and Luo An and Mona were now carefully observing the vehicle.
"The safety airbag is fully deployed."
Opening the door to the driver's compartment, Luo An carefully examined the specific conditions inside.
"You know, Luo An."
Hearing Luo An's remark, Mona, who was putting on gloves, raised her eyebrows:
"If the driving speed is too fast, the airbag won't be of any use, and the driver will still get injured, or even die if it comes to that."
"Are you suggesting that I should drive slower in the future?"
Luo An said with a tilted head and a mischievous smile, "Next time for sure."
"Hmpf."
Mona wrinkled her nose and yanked open the rear car door, waving away the dust that faced her, and simultaneously asked:
"Have you found anything?"
"A little."
Luo An nodded and extended his hand pointing toward the steering wheel of the car:
"There are spatter-type bloodstains on the dashboard and the windscreen."
Mona tilted her head, puzzled:
"What do you mean?"
"Normally, there wouldn't be spatter-type bloodstains there because the safety airbag would be in between as a protection and barrier."
Luo An tugged the seat belt of the driver's seat while explaining:
"But the presence of bloodstains there indicates that at the moment of the collision, the airbag didn't deploy immediately.
It wasn't until Ivande violently hit the steering wheel, and blood spurted out, that the airbag finally deployed."
"So,"
Mona concluded, her eyes narrowing slightly, "was the car tampered with?"
