I guess I was too focused on my mining work that I did not even notice that the other miners around me were already watching me closely and have stopped working altogether. For some reason, I miraculously have been provided two more sacks for mining without me noticing who left it there. I have successfully mined an assortment of different kinds of gemstones placed haphazardly in the cloth sacks next to my working area.

The only thing that brought me out of my work mode trance was a loud bell that rang through the whole of the mining area, signifying the end of the work day. I looked around and saw everybody tidying up their sacks and tools so I followed suit. When in Rome, do what the Romans do.

As I walked towards the exit of the mine, one of the elderly miners that helped me earlier muttered under his breath, "Thank you". I looked at him in confusion so he smiled and kindly explained to me as we walked towards the exit.

It turns out that the productivity for a particular mine is computed as a collective, meaning the total mined amount for all workers on that day. Although we are all paid the same amount per hour of work, productivity of the day dictates if the workers will get any bonuses or days off of work from the mining supervisors and the owners. As the elderly man said, it has become harder and harder to reach the targets so he can’t remember anymore when anyone were able to take a day off or received any extra money for work.

After the bell rang, all the workers were asked to fall in line again in front of tables placed outside the mine. The tables have one mining supervisor each who is tasked to weigh, appraise and give a price to the gems that we have mined. They would also compute for the commission of each miner.

Since we are only daily workers, the commission is quite shitty so to speak. The miner will only get 30% of the market value of the gem or precious stones. Well, I took a lot of gems from the mine so I am not one to talk or complain about it.

The managers and the owner were a bit compassionate as they just made sure to make it up to their group of miners by giving bonuses instead. The best miner will get 500 coppers for the day on top of his/her commission while the rest of the group will get an extra 200 coppers if they reaching or go beyond the targets for the day . I hope they give more because I am sure, I may have broken the targets for the week or even for the month with my haul.

I did hide my precious little ones in the storage though. I had it safely kept in my shared storage with Helios, my money-maker and financial manager husband. Just when I was depositing every gem in our shared storage, I found his reply on my request earlier. As expected of his efficiency, I got an approval from my in-laws as well as a signed ownership document of the middle unowned area here in Kolyer. It even has Aurum’s and Helios’ signature on it.

I couldn’t help but chuckle as my money-grubber husband really included his signature, making sure he is not excluded in this money-making venture. Very smart indeed.

Before I knew it, it was my turn to present the things I have found today. Though the gems are not of the highest quality (just mid or low grade ones), just the sheer quantity of it will definitely earn me some money. I hope they give us a higher bonus too and maybe even a day off of work tomorrow for all the miners around.

The supervisor looked at me with sparkling eyes, seeing that I have three bulging sacks with me. I placed the sacks on top of the long table and started pouring its contents on it. The supervisor was surprised and signaled one of his minions to divert the line to another table since it will take some time before the appraisal for my haul is over. He also called in more people to help out.

It took almost an hour before all the gems are appraised and priced. It took not just the supervisor but 4 other people to help out so that we can finish all of it before sun down. I looked around and it seems like none of the miners have left, as if waiting for the results of my appraisal.

After the long wait, the supervisor wrote a few things on a piece of paper. As I looked at it, it showed the breakdown of all the items I have mined, their narket value and then how much commission I had which was suprisingly based on 40% and not 30%. I looked at the supervisor with evident confusion and he whispered that it was an extra reward for giving the whole mine bonuses and a day off the next day.

I gratefully accepted their gesture and also gave the five people that helped me appraise the items, a few coins each. I hid the money discreetly into my chest afterwards. My money bag already includes my reward for being the best miner for the day. I earned a whopping 2 gold 275 silver and 600 coppers today.

The supervisor then stood up and asked for everyone’s attention. All the miners who have all been waiting all along looked towards his direction.

He excitedly announced to everyone that all the contracted miners and even the daily workers will have 2 days off starting tomorrow. He also followed it up with another good news that each individual will also receive a reward of 400 coppers for hitting the targets enough to cover two days of work.

While everyone was celebrating, I slipped away out of the crowd unnoticed. I have to secure my money and of course, my identity as well. Once I was in a secluded corner away from prying eyes, I teleported straight inside my wagon along the southside of the open area.
