Chapter 1472: Shattered Illusions

Fletchling was placed by Yuga in the Volcano Sub-Ecopark. Although it didn’t yet possess the Fire-type attribute, its evolved forms—Fletchinder and Talonflame—were both Fire-type Pokémon, so it had a good affinity with Fire-type energy.

However, there were no bird Pokémon in the Volcano Sub-Ecopark, which made Fletchling, who loved lively crowds, feel somewhat out of place. So after settling in, it actually preferred to run off to the Grassland Sub-Ecopark, where many bird Pokémon resided.

The bird Pokémon living in the Grassland Sub-Ecopark included Swellow, Starly, Murkrow, Pidgey, and so on. With its naturally sociable personality, Fletchling managed to blend in and become friendly with everyone in just one day.

With Fletchling’s addition, the bird flocks in the Grassland Sub-Ecopark suddenly became much livelier, like a drop of oil falling into a blazing flame.

When other Pokémon passed by the massive Milk Tree, they couldn’t help but look up, because there would always be bursts of cheerful chirping coming from the tree.

It was Fletchling chatting happily with its new friends!

Now, most of the young bird Pokémon in the Grassland Sub-Ecopark were born directly within the Ecopark and had never experienced life in the wild. Because of this, they were very curious about Fletchling’s experiences living out in the wild alone and often gathered around to hear it tell stories.

Fletchling, having had fewer opportunities like this before, actually loved showing off its "knowledge and experiences."

And Fletchling’s so-called "knowledge and experiences" were always full of thrilling and dramatic tales—like Moltres battling Articuno, a Pachirisu staging a grand revenge against a Goodra, or the tragic romance between a Florges and an Aegislash that defied societal norms...

It even took the story of Yuga encountering Ariana’s six Pokémon and embellished—or rather, completely rewrote—it before telling it to the others.

Regardless of the story’s authenticity, everyone listened with great interest, and Fletchling told the tales with great enthusiasm.

One day, Chatot was feeling bored at the Island Ecopark and thought about coming back for a visit. It just so happened to catch Fletchling in the middle of bragging to the others, so it stopped by to listen in.

That one listen almost had it laughing to death—this little guy really knew how to exaggerate! Did it think no one else had ever lived in the wild before?

Sure, life in the wild was dangerous, but for most, it was filled more with daily struggles to survive than with grand, earth-shaking battles.

Let’s not even talk about anything else—just the kind of battle between a Moltres and an Articuno, that’s not something a rookie like Fletchling could even witness! They’d be gone with just a breath from one of those legendary Pokémon!

In fact, the parents of the young Pokémon listening to Fletchling’s stories all knew it was exaggerating. After all, some of them had lived in the wild themselves. But they thought the stories were fun, so no one exposed the truth.

Stories are meant to be entertaining, after all—there’s no need to dig too deep.

Since no one else exposed Fletchling, Chatot had no intention of playing the villain either. It just pretended not to notice and went off cheerfully to catch up with its old friends.

After playing to its heart’s content, Fletchling finally decided to leave. Coincidentally, Chatot, who had just finished reminiscing with old friends, was also planning to head off. The two Pokémon happened to run into each other.

Perhaps due to Ho-Oh’s growing influence, Chatot had developed a subtle sense of connection with Fletchling, who was both a Flying-type and would one day become a Fire-type as well. So it stopped and asked, "Hey, kid! Are you new around here?"

Fletchling’s eyes lit up when it saw Chatot, feeling an inexplicable sense of familiarity, so it cheerfully flew over and replied, "Yep! Where did you come from? Why haven’t I seen you around here before?"

Fletchling had basically already become familiar with all the bird Pokémon in this area—at least well enough to recognize them by face. It searched its memory but couldn’t recall ever seeing Chatot.

Chatot replied, "I don’t live here, so of course you haven’t seen me."

Hearing that made Fletchling even more interested in Chatot, and it circled around, asking all sorts of questions.

After chatting for a while, Chatot suddenly asked, "Wanna go out and play with me?"

Fletchling perked up immediately. "Where are we going to play?"

Chatot grinned. "Outside." Having stayed in the Island Ecopark for quite a while, Chatot hadn’t gone out for a real adventure in a long time.

"Sure! Sure!" Fletchling answered excitedly.

After it and Yuga left Verdant Hill, Fletchling hadn’t spent much time in its Poké Ball. Most of the time, it stayed outside and got to witness the colorful, dazzling human world.

However, Yuga had been quite busy during that period, so he didn’t have much time to take Fletchling out to play. All Fletchling could do was stare longingly. Now that it finally had a chance, of course it didn’t want to miss it.

"Then come with me!"

With a flap of its wings, Chatot eagerly led Fletchling outside.

When they reached the door, Fletchling suddenly started to feel nervous and asked, "If we go out like this, won’t Yuga get mad?"

Chatot replied nonchalantly, "He won’t. But if you’re worried, I’ll take you to let him know." Obviously, the newly arrived Fletchling didn’t yet understand that Yuga never restricted their freedom.

Yuga was chatting with a customer in the shop. When Chatot mentioned it was taking Fletchling out to play, he didn’t think too much and simply agreed.

However, he still reminded them, "Take good care of Fletchling out there. And don’t cause any trouble!"

Chatot patted its chest confidently and promised, "Got it! What’s there to worry about with me around?"

Yuga shook his head helplessly, thinking this fellow still had no sense of self-awareness.

As they flew out of YoYo Day Care, Chatot flapped its wings a few times and took a deep breath, exclaiming, "Ah! This air feels so familiar!"

Fletchling looked around the bustling street full of people with great excitement—it was its first time venturing out in the Verdanturf Town, and its eyes were filled with curiosity.

It hadn’t flown far before the neighbors started to notice the ever-so-flashy Chatot and greeted it one after another.

"Well, if it isn’t Chatot! Haven’t seen you in a while."

Chatot puffed out its chest and said proudly, "Busy, busy! Our boss thinks highly of me!"

The person burst into laughter. "Thinks highly of your bragging skills, maybe?" Clearly very familiar with Chatot’s nature. "Don’t tell me you were put in solitary confinement by Gym Leader Shimizu? Hahaha..."

"Solitary confinement? No way!" Chatot was indignant. It shook its head and said smugly, "Hmph, you ordinary folks don’t understand me. The boss couldn’t love me more!"

Everyone laughed even harder at that.

Chatot took Fletchling around the neighborhood, where similar conversations happened countless times. Chatot and the locals were more than familiar with each other.

Since it hadn’t been out for a while, people were actually pretty happy to see this little troublemaker again, and many even gave it gifts—mostly snacks. Fletchling, by tagging along, received quite a haul as well.

Chatot had a particularly sweet mouth and was a natural charmer, especially loved by the elderly. Seeing how popular Chatot was, Fletchling was amazed—it realized it still had a lot to learn.

After touring the neighborhood, Chatot brought Fletchling to the Delivery House, which was a place that took in stray Flying-type Pokémon from the town and provided them with jobs. freeweɓnøvel~com

Previously, to solve the problem of stray Flying-type Pokémon in the Verdanturf Town, the town had decided to house these Pokémon and give them responsibilities in local delivery services—some delivered packages, some delivered takeout, and so on—bringing great convenience to the town.

When this system was still developing, Chatot had spent some time helping out at the Delivery House, mainly assisting in training the Flying Pokémon to communicate with humans. Although it had left later on, it still visited from time to time.

Today, Chatot brought Fletchling there for a visit.

Although Chatot seemed unreliable in the eyes of Yuga and others, it was actually quite popular at the Delivery House.

The Flying-type Pokémon working at the Delivery House were always very busy, so not many were around at any given time. But as soon as Chatot entered, everyone chirped and gathered around warmly to greet it.

Fletchling was utterly shocked upon learning that these Flying Pokémon actually had jobs. It thought: As expected of city Pokémon—they even have jobs! Unlike us countryside Pokémon, who rely entirely on nature for food and shelter!

After going around with Chatot, Fletchling finally saw what it meant to have a wide circle of friends.

After staying at the Delivery House for a while, Chatot took Fletchling and left. Chatot hadn’t been out for a long time, and there were still many places it wanted to go—staying too long in one place just wouldn’t do.

The two Pokémon hadn’t walked far from the Delivery House when they suddenly heard a commotion coming from the street corner. Naturally curious, Chatot led Fletchling quietly over to take a look.

In the corner of the wall, four children were cornering a thin and weak little boy. All five children looked to be about six or seven years old.

The tallest and strongest boy, who was clearly the leader, arrogantly pointed at the frail boy and said, "Haruki, hurry up and lend us your Chikorita to play with! Or else, don’t even think about leaving today!"

The frail boy named Haruki hugged his Chikorita tightly and said timidly, "N-no... I can’t. Chikorita is my good friend... I... I can’t lend it to you."

The tall and strong boy was furious when he heard this and gave Haruki a hard shove. Haruki fell to the ground, scraping his palm, but with his other arm, he still clung tightly to his Chikorita.

Seeing this, the other three boys reached out to grab Chikorita. Chikorita, who had been extremely frightened, became angry when it saw its owner get hurt and leapt out of Haruki’s arms, shouting fiercely at the boys.

"Chikorita~ Chikorita~ Chikorita~!"

The boys saw that Chikorita had delivered itself right into their hands and all reached out to grab it at once. Amid the chaos, Chikorita flung out its vines and whipped them around wildly.

The four boys were struck by the Vine Whip and yelped in pain, instantly growing furious. The tall and strong boy went a step further—he grabbed Chikorita’s vine and violently hurled it away.

Chikorita had probably just been born not long ago and didn’t have much strength. It was flung into the air and slammed hard into the corner of the wall, letting out a pained cry.

Seeing that Chikorita had been hurt, Haruki let out a loud cry and charged at the tall boy, knocking him to the ground. He then ran over to pick up Chikorita, and big teardrops began falling from his eyes.

The tall boy was hurt by the impact and climbed up angrily, then ordered his three followers to go beat up Haruki.

"Hey! What are you kids doing!"

Overflowing with a sense of justice, Chatot finally couldn’t stand it any longer and burst out with a loud cry.

The three kids who were just about to make a move shrieked the moment they saw Chatot.

"It’s that bad bird! It’s back again!"

"Run! Run!"

The three kids dashed away and hid behind the tall boy, completely forgetting about the "task" their boss had given them.

Seeing how cowardly his underlings were, the tall and strong boy said angrily, "What are you doing? It’s just a dumb bird!"

Chatot was instantly furious upon hearing that. "You little brat, how dare you talk like that? Dumb bird? Is there another Pokémon in this world as handsome and mighty as me?"

The tall boy was just about to reply when one of his little followers quickly tugged at his sleeve. "Natsuhiko, let’s get out of here fast! That bird is seriously bad! It always steals our food—and it can breathe fire and burn people!"

The tall boy named Natsuhiko was instantly dumbfounded, mouth agape. He never expected the bird to be that wicked—it even stole candy from children.

Fletchling, who had just been looking up to Chatot with admiration, now stared at it in disbelief, completely shocked that it was this kind of Pokémon.

Chatot frustrated, snapped, "So what if I ate a few pieces of your candy? Do you really need to hold onto that forever? You little brats only remember getting eaten but not the beatings, huh!"

Turns out, these kids were infamous troublemakers in the area. They often fought roosters and walked dogs—causing all kinds of mischief. Every time Chatot came across them up to no good, it would step in and teach them a lesson.

So, in the eyes of the local rascals, Chatot was "notorious."

As for the boy named Natsuhiko and the bullied boy Haruki, they had only recently moved to the area, so they weren’t aware of Chatot’s infamous reputation.

Hearing Chatot’s retort, both Fletchling and Natsuhiko gave it even weirder looks—so... everything those kids said was true?

The image Fletchling had of Chatot completely shattered into pieces.

"You little punks still not leaving? You waiting here for me to treat you to dinner or something?" Chatot shouted while pointing at the troublemakers, pretending like it was going to teach them a lesson.

Remembering the terrifying experiences they had with Chatot before, the kids started trembling all over, their legs shaking, wishing they could run off immediately.

But Natsuhiko didn’t want to leave. He wasn’t afraid of this dumb bird. But the next second, Chatot flapped its wings and unleashed a wave of scorching heat that rolled forward and even scorched the ground.

The words on the tip of Natsuhiko’s tongue were instantly swallowed back down, and he changed his tune: "Just you wait! This isn’t over!" Then he turned and ran off with his underlings!

Chatot snorted coldly at the sight: "Hmph, cowards!"

Then it turned to the corner where Haruki was: "Hey, kid over there! What are you spacing out for? Hurry up and take your Chikorita to the Pokémon Center!"

Only then did Haruki come to his senses. Hugging his Chikorita, he started running toward the Pokémon Center. But after just a few steps, he paused and turned back to say a soft "thank you" to Chatot, so quiet that Chatot almost didn’t hear it.

"Spineless kid," Chatot couldn’t help but mutter.

At this point, Fletchling, who had completely lost its admiration for Chatot, could only think: "It’s hard to put into words."

"Forget it, we’re done with wandering. Let’s go back. I’ll take you to my place and show you something cool!"

Now completely uninterested in strolling around anymore, Chatot said to Fletchling.
