Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 94: Exposed
"Miss Hughes just said the person you’ve always liked is Luna. Is that true?" Sharon Quincy had no intention of covering for Serena Hughes.
Serena Hughes froze when she heard this.
’It’s over!’
Sure enough, at the mention of the name "Luna," Damian Hawthorne’s gaze turned frigid. A sharp, cold light flashed in his eyes. "Who told you that?"
"Miss Hughes did." Sharon Quincy jutted her chin in Serena Hughes’s direction. "She said you’ve always liked someone named Luna, and that you’re still not married because you’re waiting for her. Is any of that true?"
Although Sharon Quincy phrased it as a question, she already had a good idea of the answer.
’Judging by Damian Hawthorne’s reaction, this Luna is clearly someone special.’
’I can’t believe Damian Hawthorne already has someone he loves.’
’No wonder he never accepted Cecilia Nathan, even after she pursued him for so long.’
’How could a man who already loves someone let another woman into his heart?’
She was mainly interested in Damian Hawthorne’s looks and family background, but it wasn’t as if she didn’t care about affection at all.
Damian Hawthorne looked at Serena Hughes and said meaningfully, "From the way you’re talking, Miss Hughes, it sounds like you know Serena."
Serena Hughes didn’t dare to speak. She lowered her head, unable to meet Damian Hawthorne’s gaze.
She had been impersonating Luna Miller for so long. Just a few days ago, she had sworn to Damian Hawthorne that she was Luna.
Although Damian Hawthorne was already suspicious, he had never confronted her about it directly.
’I can’t believe this Selina Nathan is so vicious, outing me just like that.’
’If I’m not Luna, what reason does Damian Hawthorne have to like me?’
At this thought, the rims of Serena Hughes’s eyes turned red.
She gritted her teeth and glared at Sharon Quincy. "Miss Selina Nathan, how can you spout such nonsense? When did I ever say Mr. Hawthorne likes Luna?"
’I never, ever should have said that to Selina Nathan.’
"But you just told me..." Sharon Quincy gave a theatrical shrug. "Miss Hughes, have you already forgotten what you said? Should we check the street’s security cameras?"
’Check the cameras...’
Serena Hughes took a deep breath, glaring daggers at Sharon Quincy. "There’s no need. I said it. Are you satisfied now, Miss Nathan?"
After she spoke, the rims of Serena Hughes’s eyes reddened again.
She shot a wronged look at Damian Hawthorne, only to find he wouldn’t even spare her a glance.
She had always known he was only pursuing her because of Luna, but now that the truth was out, she was still overcome with sadness.
’It’s all because of this Selina Nathan!’
’If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be in this humiliating position, and my relationship with Mr. Hawthorne wouldn’t have hit rock bottom.’
"Mr. Hawthorne, I’m very sorry, but I have to go. I’ll be leaving now."
Now that she was exposed, every second Serena Hughes remained was torture.
She was afraid—afraid Damian Hawthorne would ask her about Luna.
’If he investigates this to the end, finds out that person is Cecilia Nathan, and realizes I’ve been hiding it, Damian Hawthorne will do more than just ignore me.’
The thought of Damian Hawthorne’s methods made Serena Hughes shudder.
She looked up and, to no one’s surprise, saw Sharon Quincy’s smug expression.
Serena Hughes’s fingers clenched tightly, her fresh manicure digging so hard into her palms that the pain made her heart tremble.
’Selina Nathan... How despicable.’
If she weren’t so mindful of her status, Serena Hughes would have marched right over and clawed her face. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
’But too bad for her. Selina Nathan won’t be smug for long.’
’Once Damian Hawthorne finds out Luna is actually Cecilia Nathan, Selina Nathan won’t stand a chance.’
She had experienced the intensity of Damian Hawthorne’s pursuit. That was a different Damian—impassioned and charismatic.
The thought of Selina Nathan’s inevitable suffering brought a wave of vindictive pleasure to Serena Hughes.
’In the end, who’s really better off than anyone else?’
’Unless you’re the one Damian Hawthorne truly loves, you’re not going to get a happy ending.’
Serena Hughes’s lips curved into a slight smile, and then she left.
"Mr. Hawthorne, I did what you asked. I got Serena Hughes to back off. Now, remember what you promised—that you’d marry me." Then, a thought occurred to Sharon Quincy, and she asked, "Mr. Hawthorne, since you already have someone you love, why do you still want to marry me? And why insist on marrying into my family...?"
"For the money, of course," Damian Hawthorne said with a slight curl of his lips. "What else would it be?"
Sharon Quincy’s breath caught in her throat.
She never imagined Damian Hawthorne would be so blunt he wouldn’t even bother to sugarcoat it.
’If only he’d said something nice, even just that he found me somewhat likable!’
Sharon Quincy asked quietly, "Mr. Hawthorne, with someone already in your heart, are you sure you can marry me without any other attachments?"
"I’m already agreeing to marry into your family, and you’re still not satisfied?" Damian Hawthorne raised an eyebrow. "Miss Nathan, given your looks, it’s impossible for me to fall in love with you at first sight."
Sharon Quincy’s face went white. She was both embarrassed and hurt.
Her appearance was a sore spot for her. After all, you’re born with the face you have; she couldn’t change it.
She suddenly thought of Cecilia Nathan.
Cecilia Nathan had a great, curvy figure, and her looks were so outstanding she could have easily been a movie star. Damian Hawthorne was right. If he had rejected the advances of someone who looked like Cecilia Nathan, how could he possibly fall for her after just a few meetings?
’He’s only willing to marry me because of my identity as ’Selina Nathan’.’
Sharon Quincy took a deep breath. She forced the corners of her lips into a wooden smile, trying to look more pleasant. "In that case, Mr. Hawthorne, we can get married, but... could we not have you marry into my family?"
"No," Damian Hawthorne said, crossing his arms, his expression cold. "Marrying into your family is a must. I’m set on being a kept man."
Sharon Quincy: "..."
’So this is what it feels like to be with a man who’s shamelessly a gold digger...’ She was finally experiencing it firsthand.
’It looks like I’ll have to wait for Linden Nathan to get here and clear this up for me.’
’As long as Linden Nathan still acknowledges me as his goddaughter, I can win this argument about him marrying into the family.’
At that thought, Sharon Quincy suddenly felt that something was wrong.
Linden Nathan hadn’t contacted her in days.
For the past few days, she had called to check in with Linden Nathan almost daily. She even specifically picked out some health supplements in Korsyth and had them sent over, but Linden Nathan hadn’t replied at all.
’Given Linden Nathan’s good manners, he would never be so impolite.’
’Unless something happened...’
At this thought, Sharon Quincy’s heart gave a violent lurch.
She was just about to send Linden Nathan another message when she saw one he had sent ten minutes ago: "Sharon, I’ve arrived in Korsyth."
’Linden Nathan is in Korsyth?!’
’Why didn’t he give me a heads-up? He just showed up?’
Sharon Quincy’s palms began to sweat.
’Linden Nathan was supposed to arrive in a few days. I can’t believe he’s here today.’
He was several days ahead of schedule.
’Something must have gone wrong.’
The series of expressions that crossed Sharon Quincy’s face was quite a spectacle for Damian Hawthorne.
He asked nonchalantly, "What’s wrong?"
"Oh... it’s, it’s nothing." Sharon Quincy hid her phone behind her back. "Just a spam text."
She didn’t want Damian Hawthorne to know Linden Nathan had arrived until she had a chance to meet with him first.
But, as if he could read her mind, Damian Hawthorne said casually, "I hear Linden Nathan has already arrived in Korsyth."
"No time like the present. Why don’t I have a few drinks with my future father-in-law tonight?"
Damian Hawthorne’s words were like a stone dropped into a calm lake, sending massive waves crashing through Sharon Quincy’s mind.
"Wh-what do you mean?" Sharon Quincy’s eyes flew wide, and her voice began to tremble uncontrollably.
