Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 93: She Is the Real White Moonlight
Sharon Quincy’s lips curved into a faint smile.
’As expected,’ she thought. ’When Finn Hawthorne falls for someone, he becomes a complete fool for love.’
"I want you to seduce Cecilia Nathan. Ideally, you’d be able to probe into her identity," Sharon Quincy said, not revealing her theory that Cecilia was actually Selina Nathan.
She didn’t trust Finn Hawthorne.
"Seduce her..." Finn Hawthorne laughed. "You think too highly of me. I might have a slight resemblance to Damian Hawthorne, but I can’t even hold a candle to him. Why would Cecilia Nathan fall for me?"
"Because you like her," Sharon Quincy said, her smile widening as she looked him up and down. "Don’t think I’m unaware of your methods. All those rich women you meet at your clubs—don’t you have every single one of them wrapped around your little finger?"
Finn Hawthorne’s smile vanished. He asked coolly, "And why should I trust you?"
Sharon Quincy lowered her head and gently stroked the face of the little girl in his arms with her finger. "Your sister was diagnosed with leukemia not long ago, wasn’t she? You don’t just need money, you need connections."
"None of her relatives are a match for a bone marrow donation, so you’re on a waiting list for a transplant. The hospitals in Aethelgard are the best in Veridia. If you help me, I’ll take care of everything for your sister."
"You know the Nathan Family’s standing in Aethelgard. If you want it, there’s nothing they can’t make happen."
At this, Sharon Quincy let out a long sigh. "Finn, we both clawed our way up from the bottom. We don’t have backgrounds or backers. People like us need to stick together to survive in a city like this."
Finn Hawthorne lowered his head, lost in thought.
Sharon Quincy raised an eyebrow, a triumphant smile on her face.
She knew he was tempted.
If there was one thing about Finn Hawthorne, it was that he valued his family above all else. If he hadn’t been desperate for money, he never would have started working in a place like that.
"I’ll agree to pursue her and help you find out her identity. But you have to remember your promise—help me find a hospital for my sister and get her cured."
...
Having secured Finn Hawthorne’s cooperation, Sharon Quincy felt a weight lift off her shoulders. She headed to the Hawthorne villa at Frances Bennett’s invitation.
The last time, it was Damian Hawthorne who had invited her. This time, it was his mother.
The thought that she would soon be with Damian Hawthorne brought an irrepressible smile to her lips.
Linden Nathan had already given her his approval. Although she was currently using Selina Nathan’s identity to negotiate with the Hawthorne Family, all she had to do was force the issue and everything would fall into place.
As for *how* to force the issue...
Sharon Quincy reached into her pocket, her fingers brushing against something inside. A small smile touched her lips.
Just as she was approaching the Hawthorne villa, she saw a familiar figure.
Serena Hughes was standing in front of the Hawthorne gate, wiping away tears, her face a mask of despair.
Obviously, she wasn’t welcome by the Hawthorne Family.
A smug smile played on Sharon Quincy’s lips as she glided over gracefully. "Miss Hughes."
When Serena Hughes saw Sharon Quincy, her lips trembled. Recalling her grandmother’s warning not to provoke "Selina Nathan," she lowered her gaze and turned to walk around her.
"Hey, what’s the meaning of this? Are you scared of me?" Seeing this, Sharon crossed her arms and sneered in displeasure.
Serena had intended to pretend she hadn’t seen or heard anything, but Sharon’s words were like a sharp slap to the face.
’Scared?’
’She was scared of the Nathans of Aethelgard, not this "Selina Nathan."’
"Is there something you need, Miss Nathan?" Serena Hughes asked, her eyes fixed on the ground, looking listless and withdrawn.
"Not really. I just saw you getting shut out and felt a little sorry for you." Sharon Quincy let out a smug sigh. "You’re aware that Damian Hawthorne and I are getting married soon, right?"
"Married?" Serena Hughes scoffed. "In your dreams."
"Hah..." Sharon Quincy was clearly provoked. "Serena Hughes, you don’t actually think there’s still a chance for you and Damian, do you?"
"I’ve already investigated that whole proposal story. You told everyone Damian Hawthorne proposed to you, but in reality, you were the one who proposed to him. The way you throw yourself at him is truly a sight to behold." Recalling that Damian had told her to deal with Serena Hughes, Sharon looked down and toyed with her exquisitely manicured nails. "If you have any shame, you’ll stop fabricating this relationship you have with Damian. Otherwise, I’ll make sure the whole country knows how you chased after him."
"Throwing myself at him? ’Selina Nathan,’ it doesn’t matter which one of us is doing the chasing. In the end, neither of us can compete with Cecilia Nathan." Serena Hughes let out a retaliatory laugh.
The contents of that diary had confirmed Cecilia’s identity for her.
Unfortunately, the diary had disappeared.
’It’s a good thing it’s gone. Otherwise, if Damian discovered Cecilia’s true identity, I would be the one most devastated.’
’Why does someone like Cecilia—who has nothing on me besides a pretty face—get to have Mr. Hawthorne’s love?’
"Cecilia Nathan?" Sharon Quincy burst out laughing, her whole body shaking with mirth. "What is she? Just a pathetic bootlicker. If she were really that important, why hasn’t Damian Hawthorne married her by now?"
Serena Hughes pressed her lips together and said meaningfully, "You should know how well Mr. Hawthorne treated me at the beginning. He spent money on me without a second thought, always gave me the best of everything, and never let me suffer the slightest hardship."
As she spoke, Serena’s eyes turned red.
At first, faced with Damian’s kindness, she had been overwhelmed and constantly reminded herself not to fall for him. But once she did, she discovered just how painful it was to pull away.
She never, ever should have fallen in love with Damian Hawthorne.
But it was too late for all that.
"He didn’t like me. He just mistook me for someone else." Serena Hughes collected her thoughts and a slow smile curved her lips. "Have you heard of Luna?"
"*She’s* Damian Hawthorne’s white moonlight."
"Luna..." Sharon Quincy narrowed her eyes, mulling over the name, but it didn’t ring any bells.
’No wonder Damian is so indifferent even to someone like Cecilia. He already has someone in his heart.’
"So what if she’s his white moonlight? He’s still going to marry me. Serena Hughes, I know what you’re trying to do. Nothing you say can shake my engagement to Damian."
"Then what about Cecilia?" Serena hadn’t planned on revealing this, but the woman in front of her was utterly repulsive.
’If she had to choose between Cecilia and "Selina Nathan," she’d rather see Cecilia end up with Damian.’
’This "Selina Nathan" wasn’t as beautiful as her and only had her family’s status to lord over her. She couldn’t accept it.’
’If she couldn’t have him, no one could.’
"Actually, Cecilia and Luna are connected." Serena Hughes broke into a vicious grin. "Miss ’Selina Nathan,’ you’ll never be able to compete with Cecilia."
"Because Luna is..."
Just as Serena was about to say that Luna was Cecilia, the gate to the Hawthorne villa opened.
Damian Hawthorne stood in the doorway, his gaze icy.
A chill ran down Serena Hughes’s spine, shattering her impulsive urge.
’No, I can’t say it.’
’If I say it, Damian will know I’ve been lying to him all this time.’
Serena guiltily lowered her head, but her expression didn’t escape Sharon Quincy’s notice.
Sharon took a few small steps to Damian Hawthorne’s side and asked with feigned confusion, "Mr. Hawthorne, who is Luna?"
