Chapter 314: Doubtful Strings?

Drip... Drip... Drip...

Lillian slouched her body forward as her arms dragged two bodies behind her, causing her trail to be stained by a crimson streak of blood.

Her body was completely coated with blood.

"Huu..." Lillian breathed deeply. (2)

Her armour was stained, her pants were stained, and her hands and arms were stained. This was the most amount of blood she had ever gotten on herself.

Even the horde of controlled cultists back in the academy realm hadn’t caused her to be as dirty as she was now.

"Huu..." (2)

Unlike the ones that invaded the academy realms, these ones weren’t dead but true devoted members of the Cult of Jesters.

This meant she had no reason to hold back on dealing the most damage to their bodies. She could do whatever she wanted without the thought of guilt.

It was...

"Fair game..." Lillian muttered.

She had also found that they were an effective way to decrease the increasing level of stress inside her body.

The stress of the people she had failed to save.

Thud. Thud.

She dropped the bodies she was dragging with her before looking over the edge of a pitfall trap, looking down at the bottom to find metal spikes.

It was a deep pit—one she would find difficult to get out of without help.

BANG!

Lillian warped her body into water, avoiding a bullet that shot right through her chest.

She then raised her gaze, looking over the pit and finding a group of 5 cultists on the other side, raising firearms towards her while yelling in unison:

"FOR THE JESTER!"

BANG! BANG! BANG!

As bullets rained towards her location, they also fell through her liquid body.

Due to her high affinity with her element, she had gained the ability to spread her element towards other objects, meaning... Her Items would no longer be harmed by the attacks.

This was something that the Spider inside the Forest of Disruption had taken advantage of when she still used to have her Carapace Chestplate.

Lillian continued to shift her body around the bullet’s trajectory, dodging them seamlessly until they eventually had to reload their weapons.

The cultists, who were handing each other ammunition, suddenly found an unfamiliar individual in the midst. It was... It was as if they had teleported! And before they could react, spikes made of water shot out from the person’s feet, skewering them through their stomachs.

"A-argh!" x 5

"Yes, yes. I know it hurts." Lillian muttered quietly, listening to their pained groans. (2)

She then imbued the element of Parasitism into her spikes, leeching off their vitality and mana.

Once they had gone limp, Lillian tossed 3 out of the five into the spike pit before grabbing the collar of the remaining two and forcefully pulling them off the spike.

The Parasitic Lines that were stretching from her back and floating in the air idly, shot towards their new victims and began draining whatever they had left.

Once Lillian’s eyes finally adjusted back to the darkness, she continued moving.

After moving a dozen or so metres, Lillian noticed an incoming arrow darting towards her from her right. However, in an unhurried fashion, she raised one of the bodies she was dragging and used it as a shield.

Psht!

Lillian stared at the tip of the arrow that had managed to pierce through the corpse she was holding, but got stuck along the way.

After a split second, another arrow punctured through the body.

Lillian quickly got out of the trap’s way and dropped the meatshield she was using before carrying on.

She then quietly muttered:

"I just have to keep moving forward... These cultists aren’t worthy of my sympathy..." (8)

As she was muttering this, she didn’t realise that the mask on her face was subtly leeching her of mana, activating another enchantment that had begun to influence Lillian’s behaviour.1

Lillian continued to move forward, turning every now and then, to finally reach a large metal gate at least 20 metres tall and 15 metres wide.

It was an imposing structure that would leave most nervous, but not Lillian. She wasn’t focusing on the gate, but instead, she was focusing on the floating interface in front of her eyes.

[Quest: Defeating the Mastermind with style!]

[Description: The Lady of Luck is excited about the battle to unfold. However, she worries it would be too easy for you if you were to use a certain Odachi. She now hereby restricts you from using the Black Maw in the battle and any other weapons besides the Regular series. You must also defeat the one known as the Puppeteer in an unforeseen way.]

Lillian stared at it silently.

"Don’t use the Black Maw? Wasn’t planning to." She told the floating screen before raising her eyes up at the gate, finding that it had already opened inwards.

It was a large hall made of stone with torches hanging on the side of pillars and walls. It gave it a medieval look—a contrast to the metal surroundings outside the gate.

She dropped the bodies she was dragging and moved inside, entering the hall where the battle was going to take place.

As soon as she stepped inside, the stone gate behind her moved on its own, closing and locking her inside the dimly lit hall.

Turning her gaze away from the gate, she looked forward, finding a man sitting on a throne at the front, which was turned around to face her.

She narrowed her eyes on the tubes connected to his back that stretched towards the ceiling, which was too dark to see through—if there was a ceiling to begin with.

"You finally arrived intruder!" The scrawny man was resting the side of his face into his fist, looking towards Lillian’s bloodstained body with keen interest.

"How do you feel about murdering several dozen of my men? Did you also kill those on the outside as well? Did you know those were people I had stolen from the Indominable Shield Academy?" The Puppeteer asked, trying to get under Lillian’s skin as he sneakily raised his hand to the side, moving his bony fingers up and down.

Lillian continued to remain still, silent to his words. That was until she felt something connect with her individual limbs.

She moved her eyes around, watching as her arms were raised up and down by thin strings she was barely able to make out.

The Puppeteer grinned, seeing that he was able to control Lillian’s movements.

He then raised his hand, causing Lillian’s body to rise into the air before throwing his hand down.

Lillian, who was previously in the air, crashed into the ground. She let out a small groan before getting back up again. (2)

But was once again subjected to the same treatment.

He swung her into one of the pillars, to another pillar, to the left wall of the hallway, to the right wall of the hallway.

Slamming her body into every surface possible besides the ceiling.

The Puppeteer cackled loudly, throwing Lillian’s body around like a ragdoll before eventually slamming her body into the ground.

Thud!

Listening to Lillian’s groan, he laughed loudly before putting on a mocking grin and declaring proudly:

"Looks like I didn’t need to prepare after all... It seems that you are of a lower tier than me. To think that I got worried over a low-tier mag—" (2)

Before he could finish speaking, Lillian’s voice resounded:

"Are you sure you are controlling me?"

"... Hm?"

The Puppeteer watched as Lillian got back up to her feet. The scrawny man gave her a strange look at what she had just said.

What did she mean by that?

Was she unconscious the entire time he was throwing her around?

"Of course I am! Were you not aware of what just happened—?!" Right as the Puppeteer was about to finish his sentence, Lillian interrupted him.

"Are you sure? Are you sure those strings are working?" Lillian rolled her shoulder, feeling the bruises she had sustained heal. (3)

The reason why she had been continuously stealing vitality from the cultists was to store it as excess vitality to be used later. Of course, this did leave her rather bloated and even slightly sick.

But it was enough for her body to endure the harsh treatment.

The Puppeteer, watching as Lillian rolled her shoulders nonchalantly, raised his fingers, intending to prove her wrong by slamming her into another wall.

However...

"... What...?"

He found that he couldn’t.

More specifically... It was more like his strings were refusing to do as he wanted.

He swung his hand left and right, trying to control his strings. But failed every time.

What was going on? Why did his strings suddenly become limp?

As he was questioning what was going on... He heard the intruder’s voice resound once again, their voice echoing across the entire hall and carrying traces of mana.

"I’m immune to your control."

[Enchantment: "Veil of Eternal Lies"]

[Enchantment’s Description: "When the wearer dons the Mask of Deceit, their words, actions, and presence are thus cloaked in an aura of deceit and deception. Regardless of their ability to perceive the truth, those around the wearer will find it harder to distinguish between the truth and falsehood.

The longer the mask is worn, the more adept the wearer becomes at convincing others, as the aura strengthens over time. However, over time, the wearer would soon believe and become enveloped in their own lies."]
