Chapter 97: Chapter 97: Someone’s Going to Suffer

Warren Wallace never imagined she would dare to talk back. His face instantly flushed red with anger.

"Fine. I’m your superior, yet you still dare to talk back to me. An insolent intern like you... I don’t think Astoria Daily has a place for you—"

Before he could finish, a stern voice cut him off. "Why are you chit-chatting during work hours? Warren Wallace, if you have nothing to do, then get out. Don’t disturb others while they’re working."

With that, Editor-in-Chief Summers turned to Claire Sinclair, her tone softening. "Claire, could you help order some food? Twenty-five meals in total. You can just do it on your phone. After you’re done, go help Holloway sort through the files."

"Okay, I’ll order it right away," Claire Sinclair replied immediately.

Having been shooed away by Editor-in-Chief Summers in front of so many people, Warren Wallace completely lost face. He shot Claire Sinclair a vicious glare and stormed off.

Claire Sinclair watched the old coot leave, feeling quite pleased with herself.

’This is what they call pulling rank. Heh heh...’

...

As soon as the reception for President Helmanro concluded, Adrian Quincy had to rush to Conference Room 2 to sit in on the legal affairs meeting.

As Aridia’s most secretive department, Quincy Manor never openly interfered in cabinet affairs. But in reality, it kept every cabinet department constantly in check.

If Quincy Manor ever moved against a department, that department was all but guaranteed a complete overhaul. For this reason, no one ever dared to confront Quincy Manor directly.

The meeting was chaired by a senior cabinet member who began by droning on with a pile of dry, tedious theory, causing many in attendance to doze off.

As the meeting passed its halfway point, Adrian Quincy grew impatient. He interrupted in a low, deep voice, "Utter nonsense."

His commanding voice, like a clap of thunder, instantly jolted the drowsy crowd awake.

Countless pairs of eyes snapped toward Adrian Quincy in unison. Everyone instinctively held their breath, breaking out in a nervous sweat.

Young Master Quincy rarely spoke when observing a meeting. When he did, it was a sure sign that a group of people was about to suffer.

Adrian Quincy’s cold eyes narrowed as his thin lips parted. "Let’s talk about something practical. Bernard Lockwood, from now on, don’t let me see you abusing your cabinet authority to order irrelevant people to do your bidding. And don’t plant irrelevant people at receptions for foreign dignitaries. This is your only warning."

As he spoke, the man’s cold, merciless dark eyes, like those of a nighthawk, seemed to pierce straight through Bernard Lockwood.

A drop of cold sweat trickled down Bernard Lockwood’s forehead. He didn’t dare to breathe too loudly, let alone speak.

’The first "irrelevant person" Young Master Quincy mentioned was Claire Sinclair, and the second was his own daughter, Phoebe Lockwood.’

’He had deliberately arranged for his daughter to attend the reception, hoping she would seize the opportunity to get close to Young Master Quincy, but that damn girl Claire Sinclair had ruined everything.’

’That hateful girl! He would absolutely not let her get away with this!’ 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

Adrian Quincy’s gaze didn’t linger on Bernard Lockwood for long. It slowly swept elsewhere, finally landing on a white-haired old man.

"Elder Hartwell, your Astoria Daily is due for a cleanup."

Elder Hartwell nodded with a smile. "Of course, of course."

Adrian Quincy abruptly stood up. He expressionlessly uttered a single word, "Adjourned," and under the watchful eyes of everyone present, left the conference room.

Everyone let out a long, collective sigh of relief. Then, they all turned to look at Bernard Lockwood with undisguised schadenfreude.

Young Master Quincy had only called out Bernard Lockwood by name this time, and while it was just a warning, it was a severe one.

Quincy Manor had always acted on its own whims. A prior warning meant you were being given a chance. But if they acted without any notice, it meant a clean sweep—and they would never give their target a chance to recover.

’If Bernard Lockwood doesn’t learn to rein it in, his career won’t last much longer!’
