Chapter 96: Chapter 96: One Should Be More Down-to-Earth

"Really?" The answer caught Claire Sinclair completely by surprise.

Just this morning, Adrian Quincy had told her she was a long way from being a career woman. ’Now I’m finally getting the hang of it! This feels great!’

Nancy Lockwood nodded. "I could tell Mrs. Hale really enjoyed talking with you. You did a great job on this assignment."

Speaking of the assignment, Claire Sinclair remembered the hero’s medal Mrs. Hale had given her.

She took out the hero’s medal and handed it to Nancy Lockwood. "Do I have to turn this in? Or can I take it home and keep it for my sister?"

Nancy Lockwood said, "Why don’t you ask Young Master Quincy once he’s free?"

It was, after all, a gift from a president’s wife. Claire Sinclair agreed she should ask for her superior’s opinion first. "Okay, I’ll talk to Mr. Quincy about it later. By the way, is there anything else I need to do? If not, I’d like to go find my colleagues."

It was almost an hour past ten-thirty, and she still hadn’t even greeted Editor-in-Chief Summers. She hadn’t even had time to call. ’I wonder if she’ll get a bad impression of me.’ 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Nancy Lockwood glanced at her watch. "There’s a cabinet meeting in half an hour, so Young Master Quincy will be tied up for a while. You can go back to your own work."

"Okay, I’ll get going then!" With permission granted, Claire Sinclair quickly dashed off.

The Astoria Daily’s workstation was set up backstage. Several veteran employees were busy transcribing the live broadcast for press releases, while a few others were preparing the post-conference feature story.

Editor-in-Chief Summers sat at her computer, typing intently. Without even looking up, she sensed Claire Sinclair’s arrival.

"Claire, take that stack of workbooks on the table to Conference Room 2 on the second floor. Place a copy in front of each nameplate. You have ten minutes."

"On it!" Claire Sinclair replied, hoisting the thick stack of workbooks off the table and heading out the door.

Claire Sinclair had already been in Conference Room 2 that morning; she was the one who had set out all the nameplates. At the time, she had wondered why so many cabinet members were attending. Now, after seeing the content of the workbooks, she finally understood.

The workbooks had been printed by Astoria Daily, though she didn’t know whose idea it was. They were filled with legal text, which meant the upcoming meeting in this room must be a legal conference.

Claire Sinclair’s thoughts drifted to Phoebe Lockwood and her father, and she couldn’t help but smile. ’If someone actually dared to criticize Governor Lockwood in a meeting like this, that would be quite a show...’

Since she didn’t have to match the workbooks to specific seats, it didn’t take long for Claire Sinclair to finish arranging them.

After a final check to make sure she hadn’t missed anything, she left.

When she got back to the newspaper’s temporary office, she saw that Warren Wallace had returned at some point. He was sitting in a chair with his legs crossed, looking idle.

The moment he saw Claire Sinclair walk in, Warren Wallace spoke to her in a peculiar tone:

"Well, well, Claire Sinclair. So you’ve been hiding your connections all this time. Even Quincy Manor is in your corner. But you should know your place. Governor Lockwood is the head of the state; he’s not someone to be trifled with. Did you really think you were that impressive, talking back to him like that today?"

This sudden tirade left not only Claire Sinclair completely baffled, but also everyone else in the room. They all turned to look, finding the outburst just as inexplicable.

Claire Sinclair’s expression remained unchanged as she replied, "I’ve never thought of myself as impressive, and Quincy Manor isn’t my backer. If I really had that much pull, I wouldn’t be here working as a lowly intern, now would I? What do you think, Editor Wallace?"
