Chapter 98: Chapter 98: Damn, Disgusting Me to Death

Bernard Lockwood sat frozen in his chair, his mind a chaotic mess.

Just moments ago, when he had been called out, he was still thinking about getting revenge on Claire Sinclair. But after hearing Young Master Quincy’s warning to Elder Hartwell, he realized the man wouldn’t even spare his daughter. A wave of panic washed over him.

If Vera were investigated by Quincy Manor, her future political career would be ruined.

’No, I have to protect Vera!’

...

The reception concluded successfully, but the work for the Astoria Daily was far from over. There were still several related feature stories to produce.

As a newcomer, Claire Sinclair wouldn’t be writing articles just yet. For now, her only responsibility was to assist the senior staff.

After ordering their food, Claire Sinclair started helping Holloway sort through some files.

Once Claire got the hang of the task, Holloway lowered her voice and asked, "Claire, Editor Wallace said you talked back to Governor Lockwood earlier and that Quincy Manor has your back. Is that true?"

Claire Sinclair didn’t think talking back to the governor was anything to be proud of, so she was reluctant to discuss the topic. She brushed it off, saying, "If I had that kind of powerful backing, I wouldn’t be here sorting files. Don’t listen to Editor Wallace’s nonsense. It’s not at all what he made it out to be."

Hearing this, Holloway couldn’t help but laugh. "Haha... The way you shut down Editor Wallace earlier was so cool! I’ve been dying to tear into him forever, but I’ve always been too scared of losing my job. You did something I never dared to do. That was amazing!"

Claire Sinclair raised an eyebrow. "It was nothing..."

"Nothing? It was incredible! You have no idea how disgusting Editor Wallace is in private. He has his own office but does absolutely nothing all day except brag on the phone to some big shot. And get this! Every time he’s on the phone, he picks his nose and wipes his boogers on the desk! I’ve never met such a disgusting old man!"

’Oh my god...’

Claire Sinclair could easily picture the scene, and it was absolutely revolting!

"Let’s talk about something else, or I’m going to lose my appetite."

"The other stuff is just as gross! He doesn’t just pick his nose, he loves to take his shoes off too. You know Hanson’s stuff is all in his office, right? Every time I go in there to help Hanson find something, I feel like I’m being gassed. Ugh, it’s disgustingly awful."

By the end, Holloway was even cursing, which just went to show how much she despised Editor Wallace. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Claire Sinclair gave her a sympathetic look. "There’s not much to be done, though. He’s the boss, so we just have to put up with it."

Holloway covered her mouth and whispered, "If you really do know people at Quincy Manor, you have to tell them. We’ve got a real leech at this paper. Maybe they’ll do something about it."

’She’s dreaming,’ Claire thought. ’As if Quincy Manor would bother with someone picking their nose and taking their shoes off at work.’

That’s what Claire Sinclair thought, but she didn’t say it out loud. Instead, she explained, "Actually, it’s just that a friend of my older sister’s works at Quincy Manor. That’s the only reason I know anyone there, but we aren’t close. My sister’s friends aren’t my friends, you know?"

"Oh, you have a sister? I don’t remember seeing that on your resume."

The topic of her sister was a sore spot for Claire. In a low voice, she said, "My sister passed away two years ago."

"Oh, I’m so sorry!"

"It’s okay."

Knowing she had said the wrong thing, Holloway quickly changed the subject, launching back into a tirade about Editor Wallace, complaining about everything down to the number of hairs on his head.

Claire Sinclair listened with great amusement and occasionally couldn’t help but laugh out loud.

The two only stopped when the food delivery driver called.

Twenty-five takeout meals were too much for Claire Sinclair to carry on her own, so Holloway offered to go with her to get the food.
