Chapter 83

Haven’t you ever experienced that feeling? When you’re certain you can’t do something, but the more people encourage you, the more you start to believe you might actually be able to do it. That was exactly the state Alexa found herself in now. Countess Eneroff was an excellent teacher. Whenever Alexa felt like giving up, she would encourage her.

“You’re doing great, Alexa! Yes, yes, that’s it. Now just one more turn!”

Even though her stiff body, completely unaccustomed to dancing, kept making mistakes, the Countess Eneroff continued to cheer her on. She kept telling her that tomorrow would be better than today, and even an hour from now would be better than the present. With a gloomy expression, Alexa spun around. Surely, this wasn’t what the Countess had in mind… she felt less like a graceful swan and more like a floundering fish.

“I don’t think I can do it... I really don’t think I can do this.”

It wasn’t that Alexa had low self-esteem, but she was just being honest with herself. Being tone-deaf and uncoordinated wasn’t something that could easily be fixed. However, the reactions of those who overheard her painted a different picture.

“… Is Alexa feeling down now?” Carlisle frowned and asked Essellia.

“I think so. But for a first attempt, she’s doing really well!”

Essellia wrapped Alexa in her arms. Carlisle, however, had a more radical reaction.

“Why don’t we adjust the music and dance to suit Alexa’s style? That should work. In fact, this social dancing is unnecessarily difficult. It wasn’t Alexa’s fault.”

“I agree with that.”

Essellia added, gently covering Carlisle’s hand with hers.

“This dance is indeed too hard for children. The steps are complicated, and the hand movements are overly refined. Maybe it’s time for a revision.”

Hearing their conversation, Alexa turned pale and averted her gaze. Essellia smiled as if nothing was wrong, and Carlisle, wearing his usual sly smirk, looked ready to summon the musicians and dancers of the Thersion Castle to create a new dance and composition on the spot.

‘Th, that’s not it...’

Alexa simply couldn’t do it. As proof, Ysildus and Terrun are following the steps well. Countess Eneroff once mentioned that learning dancing would be beneficial for Ysildus and Terrun, so the two spectators joined the class.

Though the lead dancer was female, the Countess believed that men would perform better if they learned the woman’s steps. Thus, Terrun and Ysildus were now learning the same dance as Alexa. Terrun, with a serious expression, spoke up.

“Is it hard? If it’s too hard, I’ll take over for you.”

“That’s not a bad idea.”

Ysildus encouraged, turning his head abruptly. Essellia and Carlisle were already overwhelming enough, but now these little wolves seemed ready to add their own opinions. Alexa’s blue eyes trembled with a strange tension.

“You should wear a dress, Terrsia.” Ysildus pondered for a moment then shook his head. “No, Alexa will dance with me. Right, Alexa?”

Ysildus tilted his head, a gentle smile on his lips, and reached out to delicately hold Alexa’s hand. Terrun, puffing out his cheeks, grabbed Alexa’s other hand.

“Then dance with me next.”

“I’ll wear a dress too, Alexa. You can wear pants. That would make things easier, right?”

Ysildus declared as if he had come up with the most brilliant solution.

‘Oh, my God.’

The image of Terrun twirling in a dress flashed through Alexa’s mind, and she bit her lip. Something was definitely wrong. Really, really wrong. And just when things couldn’t get more bizarre, Ysildus took it a step further.

“Since I am Ysu... should I go with Ysillia?”

He lifted Alexa’s hand and kissed the back of it with a mischievous expression. At her wits’ end, Alexa shook off both wolves and raised her hand high.

“Mother! I will try my best!”

It seemed like the only way out. She needed to shake off this strange Alice-in-Wonderland feeling. Countess Eneroff laughed at the sight of Alexa, who was on the verge of tears. She finally understood why the people of Thersion Castle couldn’t help but smile and fuss over Alexa.

The Countess started the music again, and as Alexa stumbled through another solo spin, Terrun and Ysildus caught her before she could fall. With a flushed face, Alexa pushed them away, shouting, ‘I can do it!’

Watching them with a languid expression, Countess Eneroff thought to herself.

‘It’s about time for new winds to blow through Thersion. After all, what’s so strange about a man in a dress dancing?’

If Alexa really couldn’t manage, there was always the option of putting Ysildus and Terrun in dresses.

Meanwhile, winter had come to the master of the tower. When this winter passed, spring would arrive before long. The impertinent girl of Thersion Castle had asked to be entrusted with the task but had yet to accomplish anything. Ruella bit her lip in frustration.

Winter was particularly harsh on the tower, so much so that even the magical barriers surrounding it couldn’t keep out the cold. The arrangement of the towers, with the mage towers encircling the spire, made it seem as though they were watching over it. The Light Mages, who resided in those towers, ignored Ruella, treating her as if she were their only stain – a cursed product they wished to forget.

‘They live in filth just as I do, so what’s the difference?’

Ruella muttered coldly as she drew the curtains. The Light Mages had been capturing the Red Clan members, dragging them in, kicking and screaming, to the courtyard of the mage towers. It was a ritual they performed once a year in search of someone who could break the curse between Thersion and the Red Clan.

The powers of the Light Mages were waning, and they believed that breaking the curse of the Red Clan would restore their strength.

‘They’re not entirely wrong.’

Soon, someone would come for her, asking her to find the one among the captives who could lift the curse. But Ruella had already chosen her ‘sacrifice’. She had hidden them away, out of sight, and secretly orchestrated their entry into Thersion. That ‘sacrifice’ was Selina. She had also hidden a few others, grooming them as potential replacements for Selina, from the lowest depths of society. Once she pulled them from their wretched lives, they would see her as their savior, their light. But now, it was Alexa who had caught her attention.

A girl with red hair, but without any trace of the curse. Ruella couldn’t even tell if Alexa was truly from the Red Clan. She sensed nothing from the girl, and yet she felt an undeniable pull of fate toward her. That realization had come thanks to Selina. Selina was jealous of Alexa, despite their vastly different lives, and wanted nothing more than to see her dead.

‘If I meet Alexa again, will I feel that way again?’

Ruella smiled bitterly. It was only natural that the cursed Red Clan would envy and despise those untouched by the curse. After all, it was their ugly jealousy that had led them to betray their clan and their lord, cursing the Wolf God in the process. Their sins had all begun with dark envy. It was the natural order of things for darkness to covet light.

‘If Selina is darkness, then Alexa is light.’

The radiant beauty that Ruella could never mimic, no matter how hard she tried – that was Alexa. The poison she had sent Selina was her final test.

‘Survive, Alexa. Become the key to breaking the curse.’

Though the Light Mages remained oblivious, the wheel of fate was already in motion. Ruella turned her back on the scene.

Click, click, click –

As her footsteps faded, the cries and tears of the captured Red Clan members echoed through the air. But she felt no pity for them.

Alexa let out a deep sigh. It was dinnertime. She had spent the entire afternoon practicing dancing but had made little progress. Seeing how upset Alexa was, Carlisle put down his utensils.

“Visten, search all of Thersion and gather the musicians and dancers. This is a good opportunity for a new reform...”

“No, please!”

Alexa’s eyes widened as she shook her head.

“I’m trying really hard, Your Excellency. Mother said that I’ll get better if I keep practicing.”

Carlisle narrowed his eyes and asked her in a soft voice, “Alexa, there’s no need to be upset. If something’s upsetting, we just have to change it. Having Ysildus and Terrun wear dresses is just one way to do it.”

Alexa forced a laugh.

“That’s right, Alexa. You don’t have to worry. I’ve already contacted the dressmakers, so they’ll come here tomorrow.”

They acted so fast! Before Alexa could refuse, Carlisle spoke again.

“We’re also planning to renovate the separate wing into your personal study?”

“Pardon?”

She was so shocked that she forgot what they had just been talking about.

(T/N: Why are they so cuute?! In a few more, more, more Chapters, we’ll see Ysildus and Terrun in a dress aackkk)
