Chapter 84

“The separate wing...?”

Alexa had also heard about that separate wing. That enormous mansion was so large that calling it a separate wing felt almost wrong. It was more like the grand estate of a noble family.

“Once, a former Thersion Patriarch married 30 times. He built that separate wing, but it hasn’t been used since then.”

“And it won’t be used again. He was… a mutant,” Essellia added kindly.

Her words, though loaded with meaning, went unnoticed by Alexa. Hidden within them was the message that Ysildus would never cheat on Alexa with another woman. But Alexa was far too preoccupied to notice.

“Are you saying you will renovate one of the rooms in the separate wing for me?”

“How can that be? The Thersions are not people who do things on a small scale. Which means, Alexa, the entirety of the separate wing will be yours.”

Carlisle smiled, gesturing to Visten. The evening dinner, growing longer by the minute, didn’t seem to bother anyone. Violeta refilled Ysildus and Terunn’s empty plates.

“His Excellency is right, Alexa. That place will be for you. Construction has already begun.”

“The... whole thing? Do I really need such a large space?”

Alexa’s voice trembled. Visten looked at her with endless tenderness. They needed to make sure Alexa would never think of leaving again. The money was one thing, but this was different. Alexa’s residence must remain within the Thersion estate. Just the thought of her wandering the streets, shivering in the cold, made Visten’s blood run cold. Visten’s mission was of the utmost importance.

“What are you worried about, Alexa? Didn’t you once tell me you’d like to open a small shop if you ever left here? Though now, it seems you want to open a clinic.”

“W-Well, yes, but...?”

Startled, Alexa dropped her fork.

“We’re trying to help you achieve that dream a little early, Alexa,” Carlisle cut in, wiping his mouth before leaning forward, resting his elbows on the table. With his hands clasped together and his lips resting on his knuckles, he gazed at Alexa with intensity.

“You will become the finest doctor in this land, not just in Thersion, but in the entire country.”

Pardon...? Alexa vigorously shook her head.

“I-I’m still studying… I even have a Teacher!”

“No, Alexa. You’re already brilliant. You’re a genius, and you will become a doctor capable of anything,” Carlisle said with a serious tone.

Ah, so this is…

‘Our child is a genius! We should enroll them in Mensa*! Or maybe they should get a Ph.D.! No, how about they become the president?’

(T/N: Mensa is an international organization for individuals with high IQs. Founded in 1946 in Oxford, England, by lawyer Roland Berrill and scientist Dr. Lance Ware, Mensa is open to anyone who scores in the top 2% of the population on a recognized intelligence test. In South Korea, the membership requirement is an IQ score of 148 or higher. Mensa serves as a platform for intellectual exchange and social interaction among its members.)

Was this one of those overenthusiastic parent moments? Alexa swallowed hard, laughing awkwardly.

“Still... it feels too soon.”

“Not at all. I think that it’s ridiculous for you to be studying in such cramped quarters. You’ll need a new library and research lab. And when you have a clinic, your patients will need a place to stay, right?”

Carlisle had already planned to ensure that only good-natured and gentle people would be allowed to visit her. He didn’t mention this to Alexa, thinking it unnecessary to worry her delicate mind.

“I’m still far from being a doctor...”

“It’s better to be prepared early,” Carlisle finalized, as if his word was law.

In Thersion, Carlisle’s word was law, and no one could defy him. No matter what Alexa thought, that massive separate wing was destined to become her clinic. Ha ha ha.

‘Dancing was nothing compared to this...’

Alexa let out a hollow laugh inside. Whether Ysildus realized her inner turmoil or not, he reached out and intertwined his fingers with hers. When she turned to look, he was smiling softly.

“Alexa, will you call me Ysillia?” he whispered shyly.

I’m going crazy. Alexa could feel her mind shutting down.

* * *

Alexa leaned her exhausted body against the bathtub. One of the first things Essellia did upon her return was refurbish Alexa’s bathtub. Whether or not the faucet needed to be made of solid gold and diamonds was unclear... but that’s what happened. It wasn’t something she had asked for today either...

‘That’s some serious flexing...’

So this is what being born with a diamond spoon in your mouth feels like, she thought. Alexa hadn’t even officially become a doctor yet, but she already had an enormous mansion under her name. According to Visten, the ownership would be transferred to her as soon as she came of age. With a heavy sigh, she exhaled in disbelief.

“Are you feeling uncomfortable, my Lady?”

Her maid smiled warmly, addressing her like she was still playing the role of a noblewoman. Alexa looked at her with tearful eyes.

“Please stop teasing me...”

“I’m not teasing you, my Lady. I’m just doing my duty.”

At that, Alexa hung her head, only to lift it abruptly. Maybe the maids were different from the eccentric nobles of the Thersion estate. She couldn’t figure out who was odd – herself or them. With wide eyes, she asked the maid assisting her bath.

“Sena, can I ask you something?”

“Of course, my Lady.”

“The Grand Duke mentioned giving me the separate wing and even setting up a lab for me. Am I the only one who finds this strange? It feels like... it was too much for me to accept,” Alexa murmured, looking downcast.

In truth, Alexa had only ever received things without obligation from her parents. She had never truly dated anyone and had lost most of her friends while focusing on work. Her belief in living an honest, hardworking life had been born out of a desire to stand proudly before her late parents.

But all of her past efforts felt like a joke now. In contrast, this life seemed...

‘Too happy...’

And that was what scared her. She feared that as soon as she let her guard down and embraced this happiness, fate would deliver another cruel blow. The maid gazed at Alexa with warm, understanding eyes.

“You’re worrying over nothing, my Lady. Actually, I have something to ask you as well.”

“Hm?”

“Did you really think of leaving Thersion Castle?”

“Ah...? That depends on the contract...”

“My goodness. You really don’t know how dangerous the world could be... my Lady.”

The maid placed her hand on her forehead. Alexa, suddenly on the defensive, looked confused. The maid rummaged through the shelves and poured jasmine oil into the bath, massaging it into Alexa’s skin while chatting cheerfully.

“A gentle and delicate lady like yourself? How could you survive outside? You’d be prey to wolves before you knew it. Do you even realize how dangerous the world can be out there?”

“I’m almost an adult now...”

With a serious expression, the maid frowned.

“And how old are you, exactly?”

“I’ll be turning 17 soon.”

Alexa was quick to pull next year into the conversation, wanting to sound older. Though her soul had long passed 20, this discrepancy was something she couldn’t change. However, the maid simply sighed deeply at her response.

“Still just a baby. I’m already 70 years old, my Lady.”

It was an age gap Alexa couldn’t hope to bridge with mere words. She quickly realized she had no chance of winning this argument.

“So don’t have any dangerous ideas, now. Come here – your shoulders are all stiff. Have you been studying too hard?”

“More like dancing than studying...”

“Dancing counts as studying too! You work so hard, my Lady. But why?”

Alexa lowered her head, feeling a pang of guilt. She had spent most of the day idling about, reading and dancing. The maid, still chatting away, continued to massage her shoulders. At this point, Alexa had to admit it: perhaps she was the strange one, not the people of Thersion. She buried her face in her forearm.

“So, what do you think of Ysildus and Terrun dancing in dresses?”

“Oh my! Young Master Ysildus and Young Master Terrun, you say? They would look fabulous! Would their dresses be pink or blue? You’d need to have new ones made, my Lady, because yours would be too small!”

Yes, it was confirmed. Alexa was the odd one.

* * *

Alexa flopped onto the bed, both her body and mind utterly exhausted. Ysildus lay there reading a book, greeting her as though it was his own bed. She found it rather endearing to see him actually reading. As she stroked his hair, she slid into the covers.

“What are you reading, Ysildus?”

“Oh, this?”

Ysildus lifted the book to show her.

“How to Become a Princess?”

Ysildus flashed a bright smile, rubbing his cheek against her palm. Then, in a sugary voice, he whispered,

“I was preparing to become Ysillia.”

“Aaahh! That’s not it!”

Alexa shrieked, shaking her head as if she’d seen a ghost. She buried her face in the blankets, kicking her legs furiously, while Ysildus gazed at her with a warm, gentle expression. The once cold blue eyes now held a soft warmth and honeyed affection. Wrapping his arms around the cocooned Alexa, Ysildus held her close.

“I think it’s a good idea, but you don’t like it, Alexa?”

“… Just teach me instead.”

Would switching genders really solve the issue of me not being able to dance? Alexa thought, poking her head out of the blanket. Ysildus gently brushed a stray strand of hair from her cheek with the back of his hand.

“Right now?”

“Yes, now.”

If I can’t do it, I should at least practice! Alexa jumped down from the bed, followed by Ysildus, who held out his hand to Alexa like a well-groomed gentleman, with a slightly raised head and a faint smile. The night seems to be overflowing with honey.

“Can I have this dance with you, my Lady?”

“Waahhh... I’m getting goosebumps...”

Alexa shook her shoulders as she took his hand.
