Chapter 74

The Head Maid sneered and shoved Selina out of the room after she’d finished her work. Not long after, Ysildus sauntered in, sticking his head through the door, and Alexa erased all thoughts of Selina from her mind – just as the Head Maid wanted.

Selina examined the trinket in her hand, turning it this way and that. It was a bracelet made from the finest glass beads. Humming, she slipped it onto her wrist. How disgusting, she thought, that Alexa would try to win her over with something so trivial. Alexa had much better and more extravagant things, but all she would give away was this.

“Greedy b**ch.”

Selina muttered in discontent as she tidied her bed. Her roommate would return soon, and now she had to play the part of the sweet, innocent girl.

Selina smiled, mimicking Alexa’s pleasant expression. When her roommate entered the room, Selina greeted her warmly, though the other girl remained curt. But Selina kept smiling.

Now she knew. The way to take Alexa’s place was to behave exactly like her. How had she not realized this sooner? Selina was just as young as Alexa, not yet a grown woman. She would use everything at her disposal.

‘Don’t be impatient, Selina.’

The opportunity will come someday.

Carlisle and Visten decided to offer new opportunities to young people in rural villages. They thought it would be beneficial to increase interactions between villages by having these young people leave their homes and settle in new places. In truth, the declining birthrate in Thersion was directly threatening the foundation of their people. Carlisle believed that the proud Wolf Clan should not be allowed to disappear.

“It’s next spring. Construction must be finished by May. Put out a public notice to recruit workers for  the project.”

“We will make sure that all the young people who come to the festival will receive a flier.”

“Good. Make sure to verify their identity.”

“Yes, Your Excellency.”

“What about those insolent mercenaries trying to climb the wall?”

“They’ve decreased significantly.”

Carlisle smiled, his teeth showing.

He would have hung their heads on the wall if it wasn’t for the festival. He had to give up on the idea after Visten insisted that it would be unsightly.

No one knew why these mercenaries were climbing the wall. Even the mercenaries themselves didn’t know who hired them. They claimed that they were hired to kill a wolf, but they clearly didn’t know what wolf they were hunting. The Emperor seems to be planning something, but as for what it is, they didn’t know exactly.

Visten and Carlisle recalled Alexa’s warning before and thought that it had something to do with this incident. Carlisle stroked his chin.

“I’m becoming more curious about what their intentions were. Give them a bit more room; that way they’ll bare their fangs and strike.”

“What I’m worried about is Alexa.”

“Several wolves are protecting her. You don’t have to worry too much.”

“That’s quite relieving, but...”

“Terrun and Ysildus are learning swords too. They can easily protect Alexa with their strength.”

Visten nodded, still worried. Visten told about it to Violeta, but she just laughed it off when he mentioned that Terrun might get hurt. She said that it was fine as long as he didn’t die.

‘My wife is honestly too bold.’

Visten’s heart sank at the thought of Terrun getting hurt, but he also knew that Carlisle wouldn’t change his mind. Besides, it was better to catch the culprit quickly and end this matter.

‘Even if Terrun gets hurt, Alexa shouldn’t.’

Visten’s expression grew even troubled. Being a wolf, Terrun would quickly heal from his injuries, but Alexa is not. She could die if something went wrong. Visten felt frustrated that Carlisle still doesn’t realize how small and precious Alexa was.

Snow was falling outside. The sound of wolves laughing echoed through the snowy streets, a peaceful festival in full swing. Everything was perfect but why do I feel uneasy? Visten clicked his tongue in frustration.

Scruffy Hair had cut his hair short, revealing a face that had been hidden beneath the unruly strands. A bright-eyed boy with deep black eyes stared back at him. It was hard to believe that such a young-looking boy was a renowned assassin, and Girion clicked his tongue. These kids were impossible to read just by their appearance.

The boy dyed his hair black, making his features appear even sharper. Watching from the doorway, Girion asked him.

“What are you planning to do, looking like that?”

“You’ll find out soon.”

Scruffy Hair replied coldly, adjusting his clothes. A notice had gone out recruiting workers for the Grand Duchy’s Castle. The boy intended to volunteer. It wouldn’t be easy getting into the castle, but once he was close enough, he’d figure something out.

The information he had was that the heir of Thersion took the form of a white wolf. Once he killed the white wolf, his mission would be complete. Scruffy Hair left the inn, paying the innkeeper before issuing a warning to Girion.

“Stay here. It’ll be troublesome if I miss the deadline because I can’t find you.”

“Hah, fine, fine.”

Girion waved him off. Although Girion had hired Scruffy Hair, it sometimes felt like it was the other way around. It might even be more natural that way. Scruffy Hair grew smaller in the distance, and Girion waved after him.

Something about Scruffy Hair made Girion believe he could accomplish anything. Scruffy Hair was the type to achieve his goals, even if it meant cutting off his own hand. Girion let out a long yawn and went back inside. The innkeeper served a feast as compensation for the payment.

‘But, where have I heard that name Alexa?’

Girion squinted his eyes, trying to remember, but dismissed it as unlikely that he’d know the name of a girl from a rural backwater.

It was already the third morning of the festival. Alexa, Terrun, and Ysildus set out again today. Visten and Carlisle had ensured that the festival activities changed daily, but the food market remained the same, with crowds gathered around the skewer stalls.

‘How satisfying.’

Alexa smiled with a contented expression, her hunger satisfied just by the sight. Before long, Ysildus and Terrun returned, arms laden with skewers. Even in Thersion, where silver hair was common, Terrun and Ysildus’s pure silver hair stood out, a testament to their strong wolf heritage. Alexa waved at them as they approached.

“Alexa, you should eat five!”

Terrun exclaimed excitedly, proud of having braved the crowd to buy the skewers. Alexa burst into laughter.

“No, two is already enough. That’s usually more than what I eat.”

Alexa accepted one skewer in each hand. Ysildus and Terrun, hands full of skewers, began eating. They sat on a bench near the fountain, enjoying their meal peacefully.

Alexa took one skewer in each hand. Ysildus and Terrun began their meal with their hands full of chicken skewers. They sat peacefully on a bench near the fountain.

“Look over there. The baby must have fallen. Oh dear.”

Everything on the street fascinated Alexa, and she constantly pointed out things to the others, ensuring there was never a lull in conversation. Whenever Ysildus and Terrun followed her gaze, she would find something new to be excited about. The festival was crowded, full of things to see. Judging by the joy on Visten’s face as he made his rounds that morning, the festival seemed to be a great success.

In short, their objective was being achieved. As a result, Alexa felt much more at ease. She knew from the original novel that the festival was the key to solving their problems, but seeing it unfold was a different matter entirely.

“Alexa, I’m hungry.”

Terrun muttered, despite having eaten all those skewers. He shook his head when Alexa offered him her portion.

“How about you, Ysildus? Are you hungry too?”

“Mm.”

Ysildus nodded, his eyes sparkling like a wolf cub eager for a treat. Alexa glanced at her feet before gesturing to the two of them.

“I can’t go with you. My feet hurt. Go ahead and bring something back.”

“But...”

“It’s fine! There are so many people around.”

Terrun and Ysildus exchanged looks, clearly reluctant to leave her alone, but eventually disappeared into the food market. As they vanished from sight, Alexa stared at her feet, deep in thought.
