Chapter 75

Putting on her new shoes turned out to be trouble. Her heels were rubbed raw, making it painful to walk. Sighing, Alexa carefully took off her shoes.

“Ugh, it hurts...”

Alexa carefully rubbed her heels. The new shoes were fur-lined, but it seemed they weren’t the right size. As Alexa inspected her heels, a shadow fell over her.

“Excuse me...”

“Yes?”

Alexa raised her head. A boy with black hair and black eyes was standing in front of her. He looked around Terrun’s age.

“How can I help you?”

“Do you happen to know where this place is?”

The boy held out a notice. Alexa had seen the same notice posted around the city the day before. It was one of the jobs Carlisle and Visten had prepared for young people. She didn’t know why a new banquet hall was suddenly being built, but she hadn’t bothered to find out, thinking it would just be a headache.

Anyway, Alexa looked at the notice and drew a map on the ground to explain.

“You need to go here.”

“Ahh.”

The boy answered as if he understood, but his expression said otherwise.

“Uhm… My companions will return soon. Would you like to go with us when they come back?”

“I would appreciate it.”

The boy didn’t refuse. When Alexa offered him the space next to her, he sat down.

“I’m Alexa.”

“I am Daniel.”

Strangely, the name didn’t suit the boy, but it wasn’t something one would say in their first meeting. Alexa nodded, hiding her thoughts.

“Nice to meet you. Are you here to find work at the Thersion Castle?” Alexa asked casually, then suddenly hesitated. She stared at the boy and asked again, “But you don’t have silver hair?”

Alexa grew tense at the thought that a new human had arrived without her knowledge, or if he was the mercenary who had harmed Terrun. But of course, it’s unlikely that a young boy like him could be a mercenary.

“I came to see my eldest brother then heard that there is a job opening. I dye my hair black because I usually spend time in the human world. My silver hair stands out too much among humans.”

The boy smiled brightly. He felt oddly out of place. Maybe it was because he was a stranger, but not only his name – everything about the boy seemed foreign. A boy with a black hair was something you’d never usually see at Thersion. He seemed to be hiding something. Alexa turned her head away awkwardly, hoping that Ysildus and Terrun would return soon.

“You said your name is Alexa, right?”

“Yes, but why do you ask?”

“You have the same name as someone I know.”

“Ah. oh, there are my companions!”

Interrupting the conversation, Alexa waved vigorously at Ysildus and Terrun, who were quickly approaching with their arms full of food.

* * *

This was a coincidence. And that coincidence had become fate. Scruffy Hair alternated his gaze between the girl smiling brightly and the boys approaching her. He realized where he had heard the name ‘Alexa’ before. It was the name of a human living in Thersion. While gathering information about Thersion for a commission, that name had come up. Since the girl had called out the name of Thersion’s heir, one of the boys approaching had to be the wolf he was searching for.

A cold smile spread across the Scruffy Hair’s face. As the boys came closer, their hair shimmered brightly. He didn’t know how this had happened, but the heir was no longer a wolf – he had become a human!

He hadn’t gathered any information on this, but his instincts told him that the boy with the shining silver hair was his target. And he had been taught not to miss such an opportunity when it presented itself. Scruffy Hair reached out and grabbed Alexa’s neck.

“Daniel...? Gah! What are you...?!”

Alexa struggled in shock, her eyes wide. She could see the wolves dropping their food and rushing toward her.

“Tsk, there’s no need to show your killing intent like that. This is such a fun festival.”

Scruffy Hair bared his teeth. He was also of Thersion’s bloodline. He knew how to make threats like this. Leaning close to Alexa’s ear, he whispered menacingly.

“You’d better stay still, Alexa. I have a good hostage. Do you remember the innkeeper?”

He hadn’t expected to use the innkeeper in this way, but as long as Girion was still staying there, it counted as a hostage. Alexa’s face turned ashen. She remembered the innkeeper.

‘Aunt Jane!’

Jane, the innkeeper, had given Alexa a place to stay and work. Though she often grumbled, it was thanks to her that Alexa had been able to start her life in this world. Despite being smaller and weaker than the other children, Jane had hired Alexa, saying it was because she was quick and good at her job. But Alexa knew better.

The innkeeper had taken pity on her. She had wanted to give Alexa, who had nowhere else to go, a home. Though she often scolded her, there was affection behind it. She hadn’t known her long, but it wasn’t a relationship she could forget so easily. Alexa couldn’t turn her back on Aunt Jane. She had left without revealing her destination, fearing the dangers of getting involved with Thersion.

“H-How did you...?!”

“It seems gods are on my side.”

By chance, he had stayed at the same inn and heard Alexa’s name dozens of times each day. At first, he thought ‘Alexa’ might be a common name, but after meeting this girl, he realized it wasn’t. Everything was interconnected by a single thread. The human named Alexa staying in Thersion, the innkeeper searching for Alexa, and this girl named Alexa standing here – they were all the same person.

“You haven’t done anything to her, right? She’s okay, right?”

“For now, yes. If you stay quiet, she’ll be alright.”

Alexa glanced at Ysildus and Terrun, who had come closer without her noticing. Seeing the grim determination on their faces made her realize they truly were wolves. Alexa’s lips moved slightly.

‘Don’t come.’

Please, don’t come.

Perhaps her thoughts had reached them because Ysildus and Terrun stopped in their tracks. The knights who had been watching over the children suddenly appeared, standing protectively behind Ysildus and Terrun. Scruffy Hair had been moving in an area where he wouldn’t be easily tracked.

“Alexa,” Ysildus called her in a low voice.

Alexa raised her head and looked at Ysildus. At that moment, Ysildus seemed more mature than her. He smiled gently, maintaining his composure.

“Nothing’s going to happen, Alexa. Don’t cry.”

Only then Alexa realized she was crying. She hurriedly wiped her tears, sniffled and vigorously nodded her head. Ysildus said nothing would happen, so nothing would.

‘Ysildus is the main character, after all!’

Protagonists have plot armor, right…? Alexa forced herself to think lightheartedly and pushed away her fear. The Emperor clearly hadn’t given up on Thersion. This man had come to harm Ysildus. Alexa was just bait. That was what frightened her.

In a similar incident, Terrun had lost his eye. Now, a twisted version of that event had come for Alexa. Stiffly, she observed Scruffy Hair, noting the wolves’ attempts to find a weakness in him. This was a story whose fate had already been altered. If she had drawn her sword, she might as well swing it. She hoped Terrun wouldn’t get hurt this time. Taking a deep breath, Alexa spoke.

“Where are you from?”

“What?”

Scruffy Hair was taken aback by her ridiculous question. How could she ask something so innocently in this situation?

“There’s a skewer over there, and it’s really delicious. Why don’t you try some? You can only get it at Thersion.”

Alexa continued speaking calmly. The wolves clearly heard her. So did Ysildus and Terrun. She could see a hint of relief in their expressions as they listened to her casual tone. Alexa tried to steady her voice.

Scruffy Hair’s movements were faster than theirs. She had to buy them some time. More people were gathering around. Members of the Blue Moon Guild drew their swords in support. The knights were racing back to Thersion Castle to alert them to the situation.

‘If I do well, no one will die.’

Alexa gritted her teeth.

“You don’t like skewers? Then how about some crepes? They’re selling them over there. I didn’t get tired of them even after eating them for two days.”

“Shut up.”

Scruffy Hair warned her.

“Why? If you don’t like them...”

“I said, shut up.”

He pressed a sharp knife against Alexa’s throat. Would the dagger pierce her neck first, or would Ysildus and Terrun reach her first? Alexa blinked.
