Chapter 54

Carlisle affectionately stroked Essellia’s chin.

“I still have no intention of hurting her.”

Carlisle smirked and pointed to the secret documents they’d been looking at.

“Did you feel anything while looking at those?”

“Carlisle... just say what you want. I see things differently than you do because we are not the same person.”

“Essellia, you once told me that it was Alexa who gave Visten the list of traitors.”

“Yes, such a gifted child. She used her powers at the right time.”

“I’m thankful for that. If it was me, I would have fallen for the Emperor’s tricks.”

“… Why do you say that?”

Essellia retorted sharply. Essellia, too, was a warrior born with the thick blood of a wolf. When Essellia properly released her energy, not just one or two wolves felt suffocated by the intimidation. Nevertheless, standing in front of Carlisle, Essellia couldn’t help but feel like a young wolf.

It would probably feel that way for the rest of her life. No one knew for sure, but by all accounts, he was a wolf over two hundred years old. Carlisle had been the Thersion Head for 150 years before Essellia was born, and had been so before that. There are a few that remember it now, and Carlisle himself was oblivious to his own age. Essellia estimated that he must be around 250 years old.

That must be the reason why. Essellia wouldn’t be able to outlive Carlisle no matter how long she lived. She can’t even tell what he was thinking. Carlisle kissed Essellia’s cheek.

“That little girl seems to know me very well. The dead aren’t the only ones who have participated in the rebellion.”

“But?”

“But they survived, and I’m sure they tremble in fear even now.”

Essellia nodded. It was easy up to this point. Those who joined the rebellion died, while those who were meant to die, died. However, those that survive are probably barely surviving in constant fear.

“But our intelligent little girl has kept alive only those whom we can use as pawns at any time.”

“They could betray us at any moment.”

“It doesn’t matter; their fate is in our hands.”

Carlisle gestured towards the secret papers. Unless one jumps into the Emperor’s presence wielding a knife with the intent to do so voluntarily, there remains indisputable evidence here that betrayal is absolutely impossible.

“Which is why I can’t help but think our little lady is taming us.”

Carlisle whispered softly, brushing his fingertips across Essellia’s cheek.

“Is that a bad thing?”

“Not at all. We saved lives that would have been lost, and rather became heroes for preventing treason against the empire. If any blood of that d**ned Imperial Family has a conscience, they won’t be able to touch us for a while.”

“Then there’s no problem.” Essellia said flatly. “How many wolves can think as far ahead as you, Carlisle?”

Carlisle remained silent, encouraging her to continue.

“Carlisle, you have an assistant, one who can help you whenever you need it.”

“Hmm...”

Carlisle hummed at Essellia’s words. Alexa maneuvering Thersion was both cheeky and cute. Then a thought occurred to him.

“What if this little lady betrays us?”

Anyone could have made this assumption. Alexa is a human, not a wolf. She’s unlike a wolf, that they could never betray once they’ve chosen a master. Alexa could betray them anytime. Essellia shook her head when she heard that.

“Why would you worry about that? She’s now Ysildus’ companion, and had already been imprinted. If Alexa betrays us...”

Essellia stretched her lips into a wide smile. Essellia is also a wolf – a wolf filled with cruelty and amorality.

“We can just kill Ysildus.” Essellia whispered, her face stripped of all traces of humanity. “Another child will be born someday,” Essellia whispered in Carlisle’s ear, “So don’t worry too much, Carlisle.”

Carlisle ran his fingers on Essellia’s back as she started to straddle him, “You loved those kids.”

“I might feel sad for a moment, but that’s all. I’m not going to betray you for that fleeting feeling.”

Carlisle brushed his lips on Essellia’s, “I hope you keep that promise,” he whispered softly.

Alexa had two choices. The people of the Grand Duchy of Thersion would obey her words as if they would pluck out their own hearts if she so commanded. They would make it happen if she wanted Selina gone.

‘Selina...”

She had been thinking about it for days. As Alexa tossed and turned, the sleeping Ysildus on her back raised his head and looked at her. Then he drifted back to sleep with a squirm. Patting Ysildus, Alexa sighed softly.

‘If I kick Selina out...’

In fact, it may be convenient as she wouldn’t see her. But is that really the case? Selina’s character was completely transformed. She was different from others who move within a predictable range. Carlisle and Essellia, for example, are ruthless wolves. She knew that no matter how good they appear to be, they might have other ideas inside.

They would kill Alexa without a second thought if she betrayed them. Unlike them, Selina is....

‘Unpredictable.’

It might be better to keep her around. Although she’s no longer the heroine, she’s also not an extra either. It was such a strange feeling. As they say, keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Alexa stopped thinking about it and fell asleep, cuddling Ysildus. Ysildus’ warm body comforts her.

Alexa didn’t notice anything in her deep sleep. It was a series of coincidences. It was a coincidence that tonight was the full moon, the time when the Wolf God’s energy was strongest, and when Ysildus was in a state of incomplete awakening. Ysildus’ white fur shone brightly in the moonlight.

It was a brilliant light that seemed to disappear at any moment. Ysildus lifted his head and stared at the moon. He could feel his body temperature rising and his blood circulating rapidly. Ysildus slowly sat up. He got out of bed and staggered, confronting the change that had come upon him.

And then it happened. A bright blue light burst from Ysildus and then faded. His body shifted. Suddenly his vision was clearer, and he stood on two legs instead of four. Ysildus stared at his hands. Human hands – human hands just like Alexa’s. His body glowed softly under the moonlight. Ysildus turned his head.

“Alexa...”

Ysildus slowly pulled up his lips. The sweet and affectionate Alexa whispered to him again and again, [“Don’t forget me, Ysildus.”]

Ysildus’ luscious red lips parted slowly.

“I haven’t forgotten.”

Everything was tangled up. One unpredictable circumstance after another, one coincidence after another, leading to the current situation. Ysildus, who should have lost all memory upon his secondary growth, remembered Alexa. The imperfect wolf had become a perfect wolf, all thanks to imprinting. Ysildus slowly walked over and lay down beside Alexa.

He stroked her soft cheek as she slept, her face defenseless.

“Alexa. I remember you.”

Ysildus spoke in a low, cracked voice. In his human form, Ysildus dug into Alexa’s arms. Alexa hugged him back, liking the warmth of his body in this chilly weather. Despite being older than Ysildus, her small frame fit into his arms.

He liked the fullness in his embrace. Ysildus gently kissed Alexa on her forehead. He had no idea what this emotion was. He was torn between two conflicting emotions as he stared at Alexa. The wolf’s ruthless nature cried out, wanting to destroy her, but also wanting to give her half as much love, wanting to protect her from all the storms of this world. The memories he had yet to sort through, and the exhaustion of his sudden transformation, made him tired. Ysildus closed his eyes. Tomorrow morning will be another day.

Completely different from the one before.

“Kyaaah!”

Alexa screamed, then covered her mouth. I’m sure... I remembered falling asleep with Ysildus. But next to her, a boy she doesn’t recognize was sleeping naked. Alexa quickly pulled the covers over to the boy who was hugging her. It wasn’t until the boy’s body was completely wrapped up tightly  that she regained her senses.

“Y... Ysildus...?”
