Chapter 50: A visitor

The gate of the building creaked open and a tall figure in black clothing walked in hurriedly.

The cat leaped down from the chair, running to hide behind Ravi’s back. Ravi looked at it, placed a finger on his chin, and lowered his head, "Are you afraid?"

The cat let out a cry and maintained his position behind Ravi’s back. Ravi had a feeling that if the cat was in human form, it would cling to his leg and not let go.

Harlan was extremely quiet at night so the sounds of the boot waking up the door were very loud.

"Don’t be afraid." Ravi consoled the cat before he headed towards the door. He had not had a visitor before. Could it be that the veterinary doctor is coming to check on the cat like he promised? In Harlan, at night, she must be a sociopath or deranged at least.

Knock! Knock!

The sounds of fists gently hitting the door resounded in the house and Ravi walked to the door. The knocks increased in frequency becoming more urgent.

He opened the door, his eyes widening when he saw the person opposite him. Arlen was dressed in a black workout uniform, his blonde hair was messy with some strands sticking to his face and there was a surprised expression on his face.

Ravi felt that the Captain was not more surprised than he was, who would not be shocked to open their door at night and find their boss, waiting on the other side of the door, "Captain. What...what are you doing here?"

Arlen blinked and blinked again, "Excuse me, who are you?"

Eh?

He could not recognize him. Yes, he had cut his bangs and his hair, and he had also shaved his beard, it makes sense for someone not to recognize him, especially Arlen. They had not known each other for long, he rationalized it in his mind but his lips pursued at the thought. It was upsetting.

"It is me, It is..."

"Officer Ravi West, my savior. I was just teasing you, no need to pout." He chuckled.

Ravi’s hand automatically went to trace his mouth, "I am not pouting. I do not pout."

"Yes. Yes. I was wrong." He waved his hand but his eyes never left Ravi’s face, there was a hint of something in his eyes, something Ravi could not tell. The smile on his face disappeared and he bent down as if to study Ravi’s face, "Officer West, your beauty is the mesmerizing type. I am feeling a little dizzy."

The red spread through Ravi’s ears down his neck and he instantly moved away, speechless, "You...You.."

"Me..what did I do?" That serious expression had left his face, replaced with a light smile.

He was teasing him again, Ravi thought, "Captain, why...why are you here?"

The smile disappeared, and there was a crestfallen look on Arlen’s face that made him look like a kicked puppy, "You did not want me to come. Draco volunteered but I said that I wanted to come instead. It is true that we have not known each other for long but I thought we shared something special. It turns out it was my own foolish thought."

"Captain, is it fun teasing me?" Ravi felt helpless with this person. He could not scold him, he could not ignore him, he could only let him do whatever he wanted.

Arlen nodded his head and raised his thumb and index fingers together, "a little. I came over because you were sick. Lisa said that you did not live with any relatives and you did not have any neighbors so I came to check up on you. I thought she was joking but..." Arlen looked around the empty houses and looked back at Ravi.

On his way here, he thought of many ways to scold this subordinate, but seeing him now, he understood, "How much did you get for the house?"

Ravi’s sharp eyes focused on him, "Why? Do you also want to buy a house here?"

Arlen was speechless, "Forget it, I do not want to argue with a sick person. Are you not going to invite me to come inside."

They had been talking at the door. Ravi moved aside and Arlen caught sight of the kitten. His eyes glowed, "Oh! Such a cute cat. Come here, kitty. Kitty, kitty. He squatted down to see the cat better but the moment the cat saw him, it leaped away, running through the living room, before going to the kitchen to hide.

Ravi’s eyes widened. He had forgotten for a second that the cat was the one that impersonated Arlen, it already knew that Arlen was the captain of the Police Bureau. It must be so scary seeing Arlen in his house. He rubbed his brows, he could feel a gray hair growing.

Arlen looked at Ravi with that kicked-dog expression, "Why did it treat me like that? I have never met an animal that did like me." His hand that wanted to pet the cat was still hanging in the air, "Well, it turns out that the cat is as unique as its owner. I didn’t think of you as someone who has a pet."

For some reason those words made him feel crossed, "It is not mine. It is just staying with me for a while." That was a whole human, not a cat to be owned.

Arlen looked at his angry hazel eyes, "That is not how the cat placement system works."

"That cat what?"

Arlen caught sight of the cat and rushed into the living room, "Kitty, Kitty, if you allow me to pet you, I will give you a treat." He took out a bar from his pocket and started waving it at the cat that was standing at the dining table.

"What is its name?" He asked Ravi.

Name. Ravi looked at the cat who looked at him at that moment. He had not asked the cat its name, it should already have one.

Arlen turned back, his eyes looking like Ravi had committed that kind of sin that would warrant one to be sliced into a thousand pieces, "You did not give it a name."

Ravi blushed, "Of course not, I have...I have a name." He looked at the little cat, thirteen years, "Asher. You can call him Ash for short."

Arlen looked at the black and white cat, "It does not have grey fur."

Ravi rolled his eyes, "The name means happiness." Rather than strength or power, what he wished most for the child was for him to be happy. He wanted him to live a different life from him, that was the thought that first entered his mind when he saw those dim cornflower blue eyes.

Arlen nodded, "I approve. Asher. I like it. Come, little ash, come let me pet you."

Alright, that sounded weird, "It does not like to be petted, Captain, what is in the bag?"

Arlene finally remembered why he was there. He left the cat and walked up to Ravi, placing his left hand on Ravi’s forehead and his right hand on his forehead.

"Your temperature seems okay." He cocked his head, "But you are getting warmer."

Ravi stepped away, "using a thermometer would have been ideal." He touched his cheeks, willing the blush to go down.

"You are right. I brought some soup. Well, two soups." He took out two flasks, "Let me warm it for you."

He touched the flask and when he saw Ravi’s expression, he explained, "My ability is to control the weather. I can cause hurricanes just yet, but controlling temperature is no big deal."

"So you are like a mobile air conditioner and heater." His eyes glowed as he thought how much would be saved on the electricity bill if someone had an Arlen.

"Yup. Very scary. Have you eaten yet?"

Ravi shook his head, "No, but I have made dinner."

"Dinner! Food.."Arlen gulped but then coughed when he realized he was salivating already. He had not eaten since his breakfast in the morning and he had stopped over to get the soups for Ravi. He did not like soups, at least he did not like to take them when he was healthy, something about soups screamed sickness.

He looked at Ravi, those exquisite features were truly mesmerizing, making him want to touch his face to know if he was real or someone that had just walked out of a painting, "Delivery doesn’t come out to Harlan, right? So these two days you were sick, and you had to cook by yourself. Why did you not call someone?"

Ravi looked at him in confusion. He was not sick, and even if he was sick, why would he call someone over? "I can take care of myself. Why would I need to trouble someone else?"

Arlen did not know when he moved, his hand slightly cupped the back of Ravi’s head, letting him lean against his shoulder. He barely used any strength as if afraid that Ravi would break if one held him too tightly. He circled his arms around Ravi quietly as he brought him to an embrace.

He did not say anything. He just wanted to hug him when he heard those words.
