Chapter 300: Are you not tired of being a hero? Part 2

King Yama suddenly raised his hand and petted Ravi’s head. The gesture was warm and even kind.

"Ravi West, Are you not tired of being a hero?"

"What is your name?"

"Ravi. Ravi West."

That was the day everything changed. When he had woken up in the Sentinel Realm. How many times had he woken up in that place? A hundred? A thousand times?

Is he not tired of being a hero? Days of missions and missions filled his head. That weariness in his chest? The weight on his shoulders? The friends he had buried on the way. The people he could not save. Those he saved blamed him instead. The countless vengeful spirits of the people that he has killed are swirling around him, engulfing him.

Sometimes, it was hard. It was very hard to breathe.

However, at the same time. If he had not become a Sentinel, how could he have come to this planet? To meet Arlen and Asher, everything was worth it.

Ravi looked at the immortal in front of him.

"I am. I am not a god; I am just a mortal." He looked down at his hands, and for a second, his ears were filled with the din of slaughter, bloodcurdling screaming, and and curses uttered moments before screaming, and "The thought of dying and reliving this life as a Sentinel is terrifying." He shuddered at the thought, "You know...when I came to this world, all I wanted to do was die. Permanently. Until I met him."

He was the most beautiful person that Ravi had ever met. Sure, the Netherworld and all the realms he had visited were filled with various kinds of beauty, but never had anyone graced his eyes the way Arlen did.

He was the kindest and warmest person Ravi knew. It was as if his soul itself was a small ball of fire, radiating the kind of warmth that one would crave after coming in from a winter storm.

His life was a kaleidoscope of gray until a fool blocked him on the way to the office. With eyes the colors of the clearest sea he had ever seen. A beautiful ocean blue.

He looked at Fengdu, the King Yama of the Netherworld, the last judge of the dead, and Ravi West bared his soul to him: "One lifetime is not enough."

"Greed. Again. It seems to be a sin your soul can’t be purified from." The voice was cold; the warmth seemed to have left it.

Ravi nodded, "Yes. I am a mortal. I am greedy. I am a sinner, and I am unworthy. I know all these, but people love me. Arlen loves me, just as I am. So who I am can’t be so bad if it could still be loved so purely like this."

"He would forget you. They would all forget you, Ravi West."

"It is fine. I would remember. I would remember for all of us." His eyes felt hot, and he blinked away the moisture.

"You are rejecting my offer?"

"Yes, sir." Ravi stated calmly.

There was a loud sigh. "Could you perhaps stop torturing my best friend?" Malik stepped into the space.

Ravi watched that tick in the immortal head. Ah! He was fuming again. He glared at Malik. Did he come to help or to aggravate the situation?

"Malik." Fengdu called out, and Ravi blinked. Was it possible to call someone’s name with both gentleness and malice?

"Since when does King Yama pay sinners a special visit?" Malik did not seem to be bothered by the soft malice emanating from Fengdu. Ravi could tell that Malik was enjoying this especially.

This f**king sadist.

Malik came over and basically draped himself all over Ravi. It made Ravi, who had been standing ramrod straight, relax a little.

It seemed like Fengdu also knew himself and stepped back. He sighed, "Ravi West, we will continue this discussion later."

"Sir, I already..."

"I have another offer for you." With that, King Yama turned and walked away, vanishing a few seconds later.

Why did his back look so lonely? What was he thinking? There was Alya and a host of Netherworld officials who would die if it would just make their lord a little happy.

To the Lord that did not abandon them, their hearts were filled with nothing but love, respect, and worship.

"You are right. Everyone in the Netherworld loves him. However, Ravi, he is lonely. The two people who he loves the most are gone. His brother is serving punishment, and Anouk has to go through worlds to rebuild his immortal self and complete his tribulation. He cannot even leave the Netherworld, so he can only split his soul to accompany them. Why are you looking at me like that? Can’t I feel pity for him?"

"Number one. Get out of my mind. Two, you are blind. How can you tell how I am looking at you?" Ravi rolled his eyes and continued, "Could you stop saying, ’he, he? You do know you are him."

Malik shook his head. "No. I am mortal. I don’t bear the weight of the Netherworld. I couldn’t care less."

Ravi looked in the direction the immortal had gone. He was going back to the Netherworld to continue carrying out the duties of the Netherworld Emperor and himself. He recalled the warm pat on that head and that question, ’Are you not tired of being a hero?’

It was possible that King Yama understood his exhaustion more than anyone.

He was so focused on his thoughts that he missed the smile and scheming look that crossed Malik’s face.

"I wonder what his offer would be."

"He wants you to work for him." Feeling the shock and trepidation that flowed out of Ravi, he immediately added, "Maybe."

Fengdu just wanted Ravi’s soul. Just as he could read King Yama, Fengdu could also do the same for him, perhaps even more. This past year has been so full of love and joy and warmth. Fengdu wanted that. A pity he did not know the best way to get to Ravi was soft methods.

He was such a good person. See the meritorious service he was performing for Fengdu. After 72 years, he was confident that Ravi would love King Yama just the same way he loved him.

He had lied. He and King Yama were the same. Malik had no intention of letting go of anyone he had gained in this life.

"Are you listening?"

"Yaya, you can’t wait to bone Arlen."

"Malik!"

"Sorry. Make sweet love!"

"Get. The. F**k. Out. Of. My. Head."
