Chapter 230: Do all kind people have to suffer?

Paige agreed to the plan and asked Maxwell if he could go with Jane. Of course, that was just for formality because everyone knew he would gladly agree to whatever Paige asked of him.

And he had seemed to grow a bit closer to Jane compared to other ’humans’ so she expected him to accept right away but to her surprise, he went silent while thinking about it.

She was worried that she had been over-tasking him recently and so he was not satisfied but on the contrary, Maxwell was thinking about the nice shops he could visit and get a gift from once he arrived in Germany.

With his thoughts being unknown, Paige kissed him on the lips, stunning him but he did not miss the opportunity and wrapped his arms around her waist, deepening the kiss that was intended to be brief.

After a short make-out session, with a flushed face and disheveled appearance, sensual if you ask me, Paige said,

"Tell me if there’s anything you need. You shouldn’t force yourself to do things you don’t want to, okay?"

He was unaware of her thoughts when she said this but he did not confirm that he was dissatisfied, nor did he deny it.

He simply smiled at her and said,

"Okay."

After shifting and procrastinating, Alexa finally got into the wheelchair two days after Ultio’s anniversary. She has been getting frequent visits from Raymond and Jane, as well as Paige and Skylar but not from her daughter or Romeo.

Jane told her she would be leaving the day she was getting into a wheelchair because something urgent came up at her end.

Of course, no one told her that Serena was present at the event, just like how they did not tell her that her daughter got beaten up.

Steve, Jane, and Raymond were there to accompany Alexa as she got into the wheelchair for the first time after her surgery but she was a bit down that Rachael couldn’t be there.

Anyway, she did not stay down for too long as she felt her body come back to life, getting under the sky again.

The sun was already setting but she could still feel its warmth. It had been so long since she was outside.

"I feel so much better." She said with her eyes closed and sinking into the feeling.

"I’m glad to hear that," Raymond said from behind her. He was the one pushing her chair.

She tried not to strain her neck too much but she found herself pushing her head back, just so she could see his face at a different angle.

He looked focused as he gently pushed the wheelchair and with the smile on his lips, he looked a lot more handsome.

"It’s a great view, isn’t it?" Raymond asked, referring to the sun that was gradually setting and basking the sky with its red rays.

"Yes," Alexa answered. It was completely different from the view he was referring to but she didn’t care. They were both nice to look at. "It’s a great view."

She dropped her head and giggled.

"Look at you being all happy," Jane said and snickered. "Take it from me, the expert, if you smile more like this and not always worry, you’ll grow a lot younger."

"Ahem." Steve cleared his throat and she turned to him.

"What? Are you doubting my theory?" She squinted her eyes at him but he shook his head.

"I was only going to correct you a little. It’s not ’grow’ younger but ’look’ younger." he said and Jane pursed her lips before darting her eyes aside.

How was she supposed to know the difference? They sounded alike to her.

Alexa laughed and Jane smiled in a little sad way. Thankfully, Alexa did not see it but Jane really couldn’t help but feel that she would get caught soon.

What exactly had Alexa done to the world to deserve such suffering? Were kind people destined to suffer?

But she was also kind so why wasn’t she suffering? Not that she was looking to suffer but she wished she could share some of the suffering with Alexa. Make her life a little easier.

She started getting emotional but to wade it off and not give Alexa any hint, she decided it was time to leave.

"Oh, look at the time." She checked her invincible wristwatch on her empty wrist and smiled sheepishly. "I’m going to be late for my flight so I’ll go now. Tschüss."

(Meaning bye in German)

With that, she dashed out of there. While Alexa wondered why Jane was rushing to leave her so soon, she had no idea that Jane’s eyes were wet with tears of sympathy.

Maxwell was waiting at the door and as Jane rushed over, running past him without sparing him a glance, he heard her mutter,

"Do all kind people have to suffer?"

He watched her back while she ran and turned his gaze to Alexa who was now staring at the distance while wondering about her friend’s sudden action.

That question replayed in his head. Kind people... do they all suffer?

If asked, he would say yes because he had never seen anyone who did not suffer from being too kind and lenient.

For Jane, maybe she had yet to experience suffering. Or rather, her suffering had long started but wasn’t something that a person could see. And maybe, she also couldn’t see that she was suffering inside either.

"Hah." He breathed out.

This trip was going to be a long one. And he would be away from his sweet wifey for who knows how long. He was missing her already.

He shoved his hands in his pocket and started striding away. It was time to leave.

Jane met Rachael and Romeo before leaving. She promised to visit sometime soon.

She probably wouldn’t be able to return to their country any time soon because she has her job there and of course her fiance. She would start her family there so she was very worried about Alexa.

Well, there was no need to worry too much since she had a lot of people who would take care of her over here. They all cared for her as much as she did and there was one who could practically give his life for her so it was all good.

"Can we go now?" Maxwell asked, standing at the door and Jane sighed. He was acting like a selfish prick.

Unlike her, he could come back anytime so her little moment didn’t matter to him.

Maxwell snatched her luggage from her and carefreely rolled it toward the car. He put it in the trunk and shit it.

"Come on, let’s go."

"Why are you acting so impatient all of a sudden?" Jane muttered but went to sit anyway.

They both sat in the passenger’s seat, each minding their own business, while the driver drove them to the airport.

"By the way," Maxwell spoke up, his eyes still fixed on his phone, typing away at an unusual speed. "You said you’re engaged, right?"

"Yeah." She answered, despite finding his question a little out of the blue. She equally didn’t look up from her phone and scrolled from topic to topic on the internet.

"Hm," Maxwell paused and then continued typing. "I don’t see a ring, though."

Jane paused. Her eyebrows slightly twitched but she kept her gaze on her phone. What was he insinuating?

"It’s uncomfortable having my ’engagement’ ring on when I’m operating in the theater so I don’t wear it." She answered. "And you, you’re not just engaged, you’re married so why don’t you wear yours?"

The backfire came sharper than Maxwell expected. The corner of his lip curled up in a smirk.

"I took it off." He answered and finally looked up from his phone. "It’s so precious that I fear I’ll lose it when ’running’ around."

Jane looked up from her phone and twisted her lips. What was he smiling at? It was creepy so she shook her head and took out her airpods.

"Notify me when we get to the airport." She said and blocked her ears, turning on the music on her phone.

Maxwell nodded once and turned his face to look out his window. Why in the world was he interested in this girl’s thoughts? He wanted to pester her. He closed his eyes with a bit of an amused smile on his face.

What was he, a high school student? Why would he want to pester another woman when he has his sweet wifey? 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

They got to the airport and boarded the plane, first class of course.

Maxwell would not settle for average class because he found people bothersome and Paige had already warned him that if he knew he wouldn’t be able to control himself in public, he was better off avoiding people.

"Are you going to sleep?" Maxwell asked Jane who shot him a suspicious glare. Why was he pestering her again? "Just say yes or no so I’ll know what to do if the plane wants to crash in the middle of nowhere." He said bad her eyes widened.

"What?!"

Maxwell laughed.

"I’m just joking." He said and her left eye twitched. Who would make such a joke? "I can’t afford to mess up the job my sweet wife gave me to do."
