Chapter 231: Who’s the weird one among us?

"I can’t afford to mess up the job my sweet wife gave me to do," Maxwell said and rested his back on the comfortable chair.

Jane watched him. What an oddball he was. And for such an oddball, he was very obedient to his wife. It was almost like he was subjected to doing everything she wanted without questions or complaints.

And he likes it that way... did he?

"Ugh." She shut her eyes. It was none of her business what they did as a couple or how they showed their love. All she could think of now was how she was going to surprise Daniel.

He was supposed to expect her in two days but she was returning earlier. Maybe she would give him a call at the door and tell him that she wouldn’t be returning home anytime soon.

She giggled to herself and hugged the cushion she had carried along. The neck cushion was provided by the private service and although this was her first time riding first class, she didn’t feel as excited as she thought she would be.

Maybe because of the weight of the things that were on her mind.

Before she knew it, she was fast asleep. The next moment when she woke up, she found Maxwell typing away on his laptop.

"Hm." She moaned lightly and rubbed her eyes with her hands. "How long did I sleep? Are we almost there?" She asked but he did not respond. "Hm?"

She looked clearly and discovered he had earplugs on. She reached out to tap him but the moment her hand got near, he grabbed it out of nowhere, startling her and himself.

"Oh." He exclaimed and took out his earplugs. "You already woke up?" He asked like nothing happened, and looked at her hand which he was practically squeezing.

He let go and Jane rubbed her wrist.

That grip was so strong and fierce. So fierce that it felt like he could’ve broken her arm if he wanted to.

She heard he was mentally ill and always thought it was that creepy and psychotic behavior of his but it would seem that was not all.

He was so on alert that he hurt her without knowing.

They say all humans are born with some certain madness, or demon, whichever it was. There were a lot who were lucky to have their demons killed off before they even knew it was there and there were those who struggled with the existence of that demon.

As for the madness, everyone had it. Yes, everyone could be considered to have one madness or the other because no one was perfect.

The only difference was the trigger and to what extent of damage the trigger made.

Those who had their madness on display were unlucky to have their triggers pulled hard.

If not for that, everyone was pretty much the same.

So, what was this man’s trigger? For some reason, she wanted to hear his story.

Now, she actually pitied him.

"Did I startle you?" Maxwell asked, noticing her fixed and surprised gaze. "You’re not saying anything."

"I’m fine." Jane said and squeezed her arm. "What, do you think I’m made of glass or something?"

Maxwell stayed silent and tilted his head. In any case, it was enough that she was alright even when the bruise looked ugly.

"When I’m working, I don’t like getting disturbed and I take everything around me as a threat." He said and smiled before getting up from his seat.

She watched him walk away towards the restroom with his laptop in his hand.

"Why are you telling me this? It’s not like we’re going to be seeing each other any time soon after the job is done." She rested her back on her chair and wondered if she should sleep more.

Then, a flight attendant approached her with a first aid box.

"Excuse me, I was told you require first aid." She said with a polite tone.

"But I don’t need it though." Jane said, forgetting her bruised arm already.

"Really? But it looks really red." The flight attendant said and Jane asked,

"What does?"

"Your arm."

Jane immediately remembered and palmed her face. She was a surgeon but she couldn’t even remember to take care of her own body. No wonder Alexa worried a lot and gave her a list of ’dos’ and ’don’t do’.

Well, she too didn’t take care of herself well so she made sure to give her an earful.

Remembering this, she laughed.

The flight attendant didn’t know what she was laughing at but saw it as sweet.

Jane took the first aid box and treated the bruise before wrapping it for effective recovery. She would’ve left it with a simple application of ointment but she felt it would be better to not make Daniel worry later.

"Thank you." She said to the flight attendant who bleed her head and left.

She slowly fell back into sleep and the next moment she woke up, she heard the pilot’s voice from the intercom announcing that they were twenty minutes away from landing.

She turned her head, only to find Maxwell sleeping. He was facing her and was sleeping like a harmless baby.

Such a handsome man had a lot of demons, she could see.

The plane finally arrived and they both went their separate ways.

While Maxwell decided to go off to stay at a hotel and start planning, Jane decided to head home first.

"Are you sure you don’t want me to go with you?" Maxwell asked her after they succeeded in exchanging contacts but she rolled her eyes and said,

"Yes please and watch me make out with my fiance. I’d love an audience." Her sarcastic tone got them both laughing.

"You’re weird." He simply said and started leaving. He had ordered a car over so he didn’t need to wait for a car.

"Who’s the weird one among us?" Jane openly wondered as she watched him for a while before turning to head towards her own destination.

She was so excited about seeing Daniel again. She had honestly never been so far apart since they started dating.

A relationship that started on a whim three years ago became so serious that there were already talks about marriage

If he hadn’t proposed to her that eve of her birthday, she would’ve probably proposed to him first. It was that serious.

Getting out of the cab, she rolled her luggage into the apartment building and took the elevator up. As soon as she got to the front door, she called Daniel’s phone.

It rang for a while before he finally answered.

"What took you so long to answer?" She asked. "I was already getting worried."

"Sorry, I was working." He said.

"Hm? But today’s your day off." She pointed out and a short silence followed before he answered,

"I got called in. They said it was an emergency so I’ll get tomorrow off instead." He said and it was like he was absent-minded.

She wanted to believe that he was working too intently to focus on her but she couldn’t think of that as she thought of his words.

’Tomorrow’s a Saturday though. You don’t work on Saturdays.’ She wanted to say this out loud but decided not to.

He must just be confused because he had too much on his plate.

"Oh, alright." She came to that conclusion and smiled. "I’ll see you when I return, love you."

Silently, she waited for him to respond to her words of confession but when he finally responded, it felt like he was saying those words to someone else.

"I love you more."

The call ended and Jane’s hand dropped. She didn’t want to think too much about it but her guts were nagging her and there was one thing that was never wrong, her gut feeling.

’Please,’ she clenched her phone and gripped tightly on the handle of her luggage. ’Please, let it be a mistake. I want to be mistaken this one time.’

She opened the door and got in. She scanned the living room, there was nothing off about it. Then, she headed for her bedroom.

She was about to open the door when she heard voices coming from the room. Her hands trembled but she clenched it.

She listened in on their conversation and made out the voice of a lady, as well as Daniel. She pursed her lips, feeling her heart slowly rip.

Even at this moment, she wanted to be in denial. Even if she were to catch Daniel in bed with another lady, she wanted to believe it was a mistake because he treated her so well.

He was so caring, loving, and devoted. Why would he cheat on her? The only way was to hear him out.

"I told you, you shouldn’t come." She heard Daniel say.

"Why? Why would you suddenly drop me because you’re going to get married?" The lady asked. "You did it with me when you guys were still dating so why would it be different if we did it while you guys are married?"
