I Am An Illegitimate Child With A Legitimate Reason For Revenge-Chapter 194: I don’t want to regret
Paige was speechless. What a promise to make at such a young age. She could’ve never imagined it.
She looked at her hand in his. Would she really pull through with it? Well, there were already talks about her marriage and she was sure her grandfather would just bring up some guy from nowhere for her to get married to but...
She looked at Maxwell, were those enough reasons for her to marry him?
"I’m sorry to have tied you down by a promise like that." She said and lowered her head. "And yeah, your words are very reasonable but is that what ’you’ want?" She asked him.
"Would I go so far if it wasn’t?" He asked her. "I’ve always wanted to be the man standing next to you."
"But what if I don’t want to get married to you?" Paige asked him.
"What?"
"What if, to me, that promise was made on a childish whim and I didn’t mean any of it? What if I don’t want you to fulfill your promise?"
"I will persist." He said. "I will persist and pursue you till you finally accept me."
"All for a promise." Paige said, nodding her head in understanding.
"You’re my savior, it’s only right that I fulfill the end of my promise. Plus," he looked away, "...I adore you."
Paige watched his ears turn red. He was blushing.
Well, at least he didn’t lie about his adoration for her. But adoration was a different thing from liking. If he didn’t like her, would they be able to live as a family?
She wanted to get married to someone she could get along with. She wanted to get married to someone who would not one day pick himself up and start cheating, only for her marriage to end in divorce. She wanted to marry a responsible man.
Maxwell... she looked at his face. Could he do that?
She didn’t know much about him so she couldn’t tell.
"I don’t want to marry you." She said, which suddenly broke his heart. "But... I might reconsider if I get to know you better. Right now, I know next to nothing about you. All I know are the basics."
Maxwell was silent.
"Maxwell, the person I want to get married to should know me well, as much as I know them." She spread his hands and interlocked her finger in his. "So that at the end of the day, there will be no regret from either side."
"I know you, Paige. I will never regret it." He confidently said and she nodded.
"But I might." She said to him, "And that, I want to avoid with everything I have." She lowered her head and continued, "My Aunt, do you know how she died?" She asked and without waiting for his response, continued. "After refusing all the arranged marriages my grandfather made, she found a man. She trusted this man. She thought she knew him."
Her hands trembled in Maxwell’s and she bit her lip.
This topic, it was hard to control herself no matter how many years had passed since her Aunt died. She discovered the truth recently and that was why her heart still felt heavy.
Maxwell held her hand and watched switch a worried expression, while wondering how hard she was trying to hold it in.
"She loved him." Paige continued. "She loved him so much and even left the family for him, only to end up finding out he was not the person she thought him to be. She died." Her eyes grew teary and gradually, her tears fell on his hands. On their hands. "She died in despair and such a thing..." she shook her head. "...I don’t want to end up like that. I don’t want to die because I trusted a man." She raised her head, showing the tears as they rolled down heavily down her cheeks. "I don’t want to die because I trusted you, Maxwell. I don’t."
Maxwell bit his lip and then hugged her. He knew what she was talking about. He could remember how many times his mother yelled cursed words towards her father.
She cursed the day she married him because if she hadn’t then she wouldn’t have lost her sons the way she did. She cursed him.
"I understand." Maxwell said and smiled at her. "Let’s take it slow, I will show you all of me. I will show you my good and bad sides and..." he had one more thing to say but he kept it to himself and shook his head. "Let’s take it slow."
Paige couldn’t believe she cried because of this issue. His heart felt heavy and the tears she had kept in for so long rushed out like a thousand bottled emotions suddenly bursting out in freedom.
"Seriously, how old am I for me to cry like this?" She wondered as she wiped her eyes with his handkerchief.
He smiled and patted her head.
"I’m not a kid." She said, smiling with a bit of embarrassment. She sniffed.
"I know." He said, chuckling a little. He just wouldn’t let his smile fall. "But this time, you’re the crybaby." He hugged her to himself and kissed her head. "Don’t worry, I’ll be with you this time. You’re not alone."
Just like how they were, more than twenty years ago, but this time, reverse was the case and he was the one consoling her.

A car pulled up at the front of the facility and Skylar came down from it.
He stared at the building and took off his sunglasses.
"Now, I really want to know what’s going on." He said and walked into the building.
After calling Paige to announce that he was finally getting married and hearing her say all that weird stuff about something going on that he needed to know, he had to end his vacation with Brenda early and take the next plane.
He made sure Brenda was comfortable at home first before making his way to the facility. He was so eager to know what was going on that he didn’t wait for the sun to fully rise in the sky before rushing over.
Whatever it was, he just hoped it wasn’t that big of a deal that would drive Raymond to madness once more.
