Chapter 62: Fractured Trust

The morning sun streamed through the windows, casting a soft glow in the grand hallway of the mansion. I descended the staircase, my thoughts still clouded by the vivid dream that had felt unsettlingly real. As I approached the breakfast table, I noticed Alex seated there, his presence catching me off guard. However, my skepticism regarding him had only intensified in the wake of recent events.

"Madam, did you sleep well?" he inquired politely as I approached.

"Did I? I’m not sure," I replied, my mind still entangled in the web of the previous night’s events. "Maybe."

Alex pressed for clarity. "What do you mean by ’maybe’?"

"Duke, I don’t beat around the bush. I didn’t sleep well because of yesterday’s incident. And I don’t want to discuss it with you, so let’s not talk," I declared, taking my plate from the table.

His perplexed expression did little to deter me. "Madam, where are you taking the plates?"

"To my room," I replied curtly.

"Why?" he asked, appearing genuinely puzzled.

"Why? Isn’t it obvious? I don’t want to be in the same place as you. Should I make it clearer? I don’t want to stay here with you. Is that clear enough?" I retorted as I headed towards the stairs, my frustration mounting.

"The food will be taken care of by the maids. You don’t have to," he informed me, his tone remarkably calm.

"No need! What if I make another mistake, and you accuse me of lying again? I won’t take that chance. Your people will serve you, and only you. I play no role here except that of an acting duchess, as everyone desires. Even on the day I die, I’ll still be an acting duchess for everyone," I stated firmly, my anger and frustration unapologetic.

In the sanctuary of my room, I set the plates on the table with an intentional clatter, my emotions simmering beneath the surface. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

"What does he take me for? A doll? Someone who will do as he commands? No, I won’t. I refuse. I refuse to comply with their demands. I’ve played the submissive role long enough to survive. Now, I no longer care about what happens next. I’ve had enough," I muttered to myself, my anger palpable.

"Bernice!" Once again, the infuriating voice of the God of Fate intruded into my private thoughts.

"What? Can’t you stop invading my private life? Stop spying on me," I snapped, my irritation evident.

My words seemed to have summoned him, as he suddenly appeared before me in the god realm, looking at me with annoyance.

"What?" I asked again, irritated by his presence.

"What? Speak! Say whatever is on your mind, as if I’m just a bystander watching you. Right?" he retorted, his patience wearing thin.

"Or what? I don’t think you brought me here to ask about my well-being, given that you seem more interested in ending my life than in saving it. So, why did you summon me? Is there more work for me to do? Do you want to discuss the responsibilities you’ve heaped upon me? If not, then what else is there? I can’t recall," I retorted, my irritation unabated.

"Bernice, stop behaving this way towards me!" he admonished, his frustration mirroring my own.

"I’ve had enough of your childish behavior. Why do you blame me for everything? I’m not the one who wrote your fate. I have no part in it, except for the task you’ve given me to send you to the temple. So, why is all your anger directed at me, as though I killed you with my own hands?" I shouted back at him, my patience worn thin.

"If I can’t blame you, then who should I blame? Who? Tell me! I’ve been dying to know the reason. I’ve wanted to know why I’ve had to suffer like this," I cried out, my voice filled with anguish.

"Stop it, you two!" An unfamiliar figure suddenly appeared before us. I didn’t recognize him.

"Moiroi? What are you doing here?" the God of Fate asked, looking at the newcomer.

"Of course, I would be here. Your voices were so loud that they reached the main hall of the god realm. Can’t you two keep it down? Are you both children?" Moiroi scolded us, his words laced with exasperation. However, his gaze towards me held a different sentiment.

"And you? What are you doing here?" he inquired, looking at me.

"I don’t know. You should ask your friend," I replied, apathetic.

"What kind of behavior is this? You’re talking to a god. Is this how humans treat gods? Is this how you show respect?" Moiroi sounded irritated.

"Humans aren’t aware of your true nature, so they naturally fall at your feet, pouring out their worries. But I know that the gods are after my life, so why should I treat you like a god when you’re nothing more than monsters?" I retorted, looking away.

"Bernice!" The God of Fate shouted, clearly exasperated.

"Yes, I know my name. There’s no need to shout. Just let me go," I said, my frustration at its peak.

"Bernice, the audacity you show in speaking to me this way! Don’t you realize that I can erase your fate from existence and make you die?" he growled, his threat hanging heavily in the air.

"Yes, I know. But I also know that you can’t do it. That’s why I was able to return to my past. Otherwise, why would all of you be so concerned about me when I’m just a mere human?" I stated confidently, noticing the frustration etched on the God of Fate’s face. It seemed that, indeed, he couldn’t alter my fate as he wished.

As if there are more mysteries in this that gods also can’t comply. But i still have long way to go to figure everything out. But still in this path i m alone. I want to figure it out who is the voice who always say badly to me and why my death is so compulsory.
