Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition-Chapter 513 : Story 513: The Crimson Abyss
The air was thick with decay as the Zombie Eradication Tactical Unit (ZETU) moved deeper into the crimson-lit alley. The lampposts, dim and flickering, illuminated dozens of shambling figures, their dead eyes reflecting the eerie red glow. The city around them was eerily quiet, save for the guttural growls of the undead.
Captain Marcus Kane raised his hand, signaling the team to halt. His voice was steady, but the tension in his eyes betrayed him. "This isn't an ordinary horde. They're waiting for something."
Sergeant Jenna "Blaze" Hart gripped her flamethrower tightly. "Waiting for what? A dinner bell?"
Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett, perched on a rooftop overlooking the street, scanned the scene through her sniper scope. "I've got movement deeper in. Something… big. It's not like the rest of them."
"Great," Ethan "Brain" O'Connor muttered over the comms. "I'm picking up weird energy readings. Could be a Hive Alpha or something worse. Whatever's lighting this place up isn't natural."
As if on cue, a deep, resonating roar echoed through the street, causing every zombie to stop and turn toward the sound. From the far end of the alley, a towering figure emerged. Its hulking body was a grotesque mass of rotting flesh, veins glowing with the same crimson light that bathed the street. It carried a rusted chain, dragging it along the ground, sparks flying as it moved.
"Holy hell," Shield whispered, raising his riot shield. "That thing's massive."
"It's controlling them," Huntress said, stepping forward, her pistols drawn. "Look at how they move in sync. It's like they're a single organism."
The towering creature raised its head and let out a deafening scream. The horde charged all at once, their collective roar sending a chill through the team.
"Blaze, light them up!" Kane shouted, stepping back to form a defensive line.
Blaze unleashed a wall of fire, her flamethrower roaring as the first wave of zombies was engulfed in flames. The creatures screeched and stumbled, but more kept coming, stepping over the charred remains of their fallen.
"Quick Shot, take out the big one!" Kane barked.
Riley zeroed in on the towering figure, her sniper rifle steady. She pulled the trigger, the shot echoing across the street. The bullet struck the creature's chest, but it barely flinched.
"Armor plating," Brain said, his voice tense. "You'll need to aim for its head or spine!"
Huntress darted into the fray, moving with agility as she weaved through the horde. "I'll find a way to flank it. Keep them off me!"
Kane and Shield fought side by side, holding the line as Blaze continued to unleash fiery destruction. The horde was relentless, but ZETU held their ground.
Finally, Huntress reached a vantage point behind the towering creature. She spotted a glowing mass at the base of its neck—a weak point. "I've got it!" she yelled.

"Take the shot!" Kane commanded.
Huntress fired, her bullet striking true. The creature let out a final, agonized roar before collapsing, the crimson glow fading from its veins.
As the remaining zombies fell lifeless to the ground, Kane surveyed the aftermath. "Good work, team. But something tells me this isn't over."
The crimson light might have vanished, but its haunting presence lingered.
