Chapter 656: The warmth and coldness of human relationships

The man leaned against the headboard, and upon hearing the words, he merely nodded slightly, his gaze falling on Daisy Ginger, who stood with her back to him at the doorway.

Her back was straight, and without seeing her face, he could only see her stubborn spine.

Only after she and Ryan Smith had left did he slowly retract his gaze.

He stared into the void and let out a gentle breath.

Daisy Ginger and Ryan Smith returned to the Stephens family together.

This large family, after three years, seemed not much different from what she remembered.

Daisy had initially not wanted to stay here, but she was curious about the changes over the past three years, and when Ryan suggested it, she didn’t refuse.

Ryan arranged for her and Erin Ginger to stay in the villa where she had previously lived; once the three had just gotten out of the car, a group of people came running from far away, seemingly searching for something.

Ryan handed the keys to Daisy, glanced at the crowd, frowned slightly, and asked, "What are you doing?"

The elder leading the group seemed startled to see Ryan, stopped, and respectfully said to him, "Young Master Ryan. Here’s the thing, Young Master George skipped class again today, hasn’t had breakfast, and we don’t know where he’s run off to; we’re searching for him."

Upon hearing George’s name, Erin Ginger’s eyes flashed slightly while standing next to Daisy.

"What’s going on?"

Ryan, hearing this, walked down the steps.

Daisy didn’t particularly dwell on this matter; she had already opened the villa door and led Erin inside.

The room must have been cleaned daily, as the furnishings were very tidy; she had lived here for almost a year before, and now upon returning, she felt a sense of familiarity, not alienation.

The staff hadn’t been arranged yet, so Daisy took a kettle, boiled some hot water in the kitchen, while Erin carried a drawing rack upstairs and familiarly went to the children’s room he had previously occupied.

Daisy brewed a cup of tea, called out to Erin, but hearing no response, she went upstairs to find him.

Then she heard Erin’s voice: "Get out of my room."

His voice was cold and impatient.

Who was he talking to?

Shocked, Daisy hurried over, pushed open the door, and saw Erin standing at the doorway, staring expressionlessly forward.

Under the open window, George Stephens, whom she hadn’t seen in three years, squatted there, full of annoyance. Upon seeing Daisy enter, he said to her, "Daisy, quickly get this guy out, he’s driving me crazy!"

The group downstairs had been searching for George for a long time, and yet he was hiding in Erin’s room. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

How did he get up here?!

Daisy glanced at the open window, then at George’s dirty clothes, gasped, and walked over to pick him up: "Did you climb from the first floor to the third?"

George had grown quite well over the past three years, taller than Erin by half a head, but he was still just a little kid of seven or eight, and Daisy easily lifted him.

"What’s wrong with me climbing? Leave me alone, you all do what you want; I’m going to sleep."

After speaking, he freed himself from Daisy’s grasp and burrowed into the blankets.

Upon seeing his filthy appearance, Erin’s face turned dark.

Daisy also felt speechless.

How has this guy grown older but gained no progress?

"Your teacher is looking for you; why did you skip class to come to my place to sleep?"

Daisy walked over, pulled him out of bed, "Go back to class quickly."

George pouted, "What’s the point? There’s no fun in their teaching, I don’t like learning."

"Then who do you want to teach you?" Daisy tapped his head, "Sleeping all day at such a young age isn’t going to work."

This little one, over the past three years, aside from growing older, hadn’t changed much.

Utterly spoiled.

"I..." George’s eyes dimmed somewhat, then he turned his head, glanced at Erin, jumped down from the bed, and circled Erin a few times, "Where’d this shorty come from?"

Erin’s little face instantly turned black; he glared at George, angrily turned, and walked away.

After all, height is something undeniable, it’s very straightforward, no way to contradict it.

"Why did you come again?"

After Erin left, George sat back on the bed, cheerfully swinging his legs a while, and asked Daisy.

"Came to see you."

George grinned, "I don’t believe you. You’re such a heartless woman, left without a word."

Listening to him, Daisy found it amusing, tapped his forehead, "Why would I contact you? You don’t miss me anyway."

George pouted and turned his head away.

"... What’s there to miss."

This stubbornness is still typical of the little guy.

When Daisy left back then, she hadn’t said goodbye to him; sitting beside the little fella, Daisy sighed softly, "Sorry, I left in such a hurry. Have these years been good for you?"

George: "Not good."

Daisy chuckled, "Because of having to go to school every day?"

George said nothing, just gently lowered his head.

The sudden quietness made Daisy turn her head.

The young boy’s pale little face held a depth and melancholy unbefitting his age.

She suddenly discovered that George had matured a lot; with his years, it was not just his height growing.

"Everyone has changed." He said softly, "Dad too, Mom too... Everyone has changed."

"I don’t know why, but I’m terrified." George looked at her and smiled a bit, "But seeing you return, not sure why, made me feel at ease. Can you promise me something?"

Daisy softly asked, "What?"

"Can you not leave without saying goodbye next time?" George coughed a bit embarrassedly, "You leaving suddenly, I wasn’t used to it."

Daisy was silent for a moment, then raised her hand, pinched his dirty little cheek, and smiled, "Alright, before I leave next time, I’ll tell you."

George laughed; he was indeed a pretty, delicate child, raised in the Stephens family with a noble air, and despite being all dirty, he still looked endearing.

For some reason, through George’s changes, Daisy perceived subtle shifts within the Stephens family over these years.

Robert Stephens’ fall from grace made George’s treatment in the Stephens family nuanced; people tend to seek advantage and avoid harm, and whatever decision Edward Stephens made, he surely wouldn’t consider George’s future treatment.

At such a young age, he had likely tasted the warmth and coldness of human nature within the Stephens family.

After all, he was disliked by Edward.
