Chapter 618: Propose

Ryan Smith grinned and bent down to pick up the little penguin, walking over to Edward Stephens’ side.

Erin Ginger was holding a gift box, looking a bit anxious.

Ryan Smith said, "Come on, give the gift to your dad."

Edward Stephens sat motionless on the bed, looking extremely indifferent from an outsider’s perspective.

Erin extended her little hand, handing the gift box to him.

"..." The man paused, then raised his hand to take it.

Ryan Smith: "What are you standing there dumbfounded for, go ahead and open it!"

Edward Stephens remained silent, just looked down at the little gift box for a while, before slowly untying the silk ribbon.

Inside was a pair of black men’s leather gloves.

Edward Stephens took them out and looked at Erin.

Erin’s eyes sparkled, and she asked him, "Do you like it?"

Edward Stephens tried them on and found they fit perfectly.

"I like it." His voice was slightly hoarse.

Sparks seemed to fall from Erin’s eyes; he slightly peeked at his lips, then ran over to dive into Daisy Ginger’s arms.

A bit shy.

Daisy lowered her head, looking at Erin’s flushed cheeks, his eyes revealing evident delight.

Breathed a slight sigh of relief.

Luckily, Edward Stephens, that jerk, wasn’t cold-hearted enough to hurt a child’s feelings.

Ryan Smith intentionally said on the side, "Is this the Christmas gift that Erin wouldn’t give to me?"

Edward coughed lightly, "The snow is getting heavier, you should take them back early."

Hearing this, Daisy lifted her eyes to look at him for a moment, then nonchalantly withdrew her gaze, bent over to pick Erin up, and turned to leave through the door.

Watching Daisy’s departing back, Ryan Smith clicked his tongue lightly, "Why bother?"

Why bother sending them away.

Edward Stephens tightened his grip on the gloves, took a deep breath, then leaned against the headboard.

"I can’t help it." Edward looked down at the gloves in his hands; the more he looked, the less he could control his emotions.

He took a deep breath, unable to calm down for a long time.

Ryan Smith walked to the door; seeing him close his eyes, with the corners of his lips involuntarily twitching upwards, he couldn’t help but sigh lightly and shake his head.

Just a pair of gloves, is there a need to be this happy?

*

Downstairs, Daisy and Erin stood at the doorway.

Snowflakes were falling gently, leaving faint shadows under the streetlights.

Daisy looked up, staring at the pitch-black sky for a while until Ryan Smith’s voice came from behind.

"Come on, let me take you home."

Daisy nodded, picked up Erin who was playing in the snow, and went with him to the parking lot.

The car heater was on; Daisy took off her coat and placed it aside, then lowered her head to wipe the melting snowflakes off Erin’s hair.

Ryan Smith said, "You’ve had a hard time these days, haven’t you?"

Daisy paused her wiping, looked up at Ryan Smith.

They met eyes in the rearview mirror.

"Edward doesn’t know when he’ll regain his memory, are you planning to stay in Chicago indefinitely?"

Daisy’s eyes darkened a bit, looking at Ryan Smith with a blank expression, remained silent.

"I didn’t mean anything else," Ryan Smith said, "just feel quite sorry for you."

Daisy looked at him, her voice calm, "Sorry for what?"

"Sigh." Ryan Smith sighed, "I shouldn’t have brought you over. Seeing Edward like this doesn’t make me feel good either."

Daisy lowered her eyes, then turned her head to quietly look out the window.

Erin nestled in her arms, playing on his phone.

This city was very cold, only this person beside her provided the slightest warmth.

"It has nothing to do with you." Daisy answered quietly, her voice faint in the night, sounding slightly hoarse and deep, "I appreciate you bringing me over."

Even knowing he doesn’t remember her, being able to see him is good.

Seeing him alive is ultimately a good thing.

In her heart, for Edward Stephens, there was always a sense of debt, feeling sorry for the suffering he endured for her.

But still, it would be a lie to say she’s not aggrieved.

She loved this man and couldn’t bear his infidelity, watching Edward rely so much on coco, she couldn’t help but feel jealous.

"Are you planning to continue like this?" Ryan Smith glanced at her.

Daisy didn’t know what Ryan meant by this sentence.

Was he hoping she would leave Chicago or feeling sympathetic?

She wasn’t used to accepting this kind of sympathy from others, she frowned slightly, looked at Ryan Smith, then hugged Erin tighter, saying nothing more.

She didn’t know what the future held, but at least for now, she couldn’t bear to leave Edward Stephens.

*

The days in Chicago flew by quickly.

Word came that Edward Stephens was now able to stand up from the wheelchair; two months had already passed.

Since his car accident to finally being able to rise now, six months had elapsed.

Being in Chicago, in the blink of an eye, three months had already passed.

Erin’s teachers kept changing one after another; he was like a sponge, continually sapping the energy from his teachers, Daisy had even witnessed a professor resign after a day of teaching Erin.

It wasn’t out of dislike for Erin, but fear.

Daisy wasn’t into academics, not realizing her child’s intimidating nature; in her eyes, Erin was just like any ordinary kid.

Erin attended classes; sometimes Daisy would visit Edward at the hospital, but more often she stayed home spacing out.

She didn’t like going to the hospital; whenever she saw Edward, she could sense his and coco’s growing closeness.

There was nothing to be done about it.

Having forgotten past romances, he was naturally free.

And she couldn’t do anything like she used to.

She no longer had the impulsive courage from her youth— even if she drove coco away, could Edward love her again like in the past?

Loving someone is irrational; it would be normal even if he never liked her her entire life.

She couldn’t cling to him like before; after all, she had grown up, had a child to care for in Erin.

Once Edward was able to stand up, his recovery sped up.

This was indeed good news; Robert Stephens’ face looked much improved, no longer furrowed or stern whenever he saw her, sometimes speaking to her kindly even when he encountered her at the hospital with coco.

A month later, Edward could walk freely without the crutch.

In the second month, he could walk a little over 500 meters unaided.

By the third month, he had proposed to coco in the hospital room.

When the news reached the Stephens family, Robert strongly opposed it.

He could speak kindly to someone aiding his brother’s recovery, but he absolutely couldn’t tolerate his brother marrying a woman of modest background.
