Chapter 26: Sunset Invitation

After my amicable discussion with the other leaders concluded, I cheerfully exited the school building, deciding to head to my dorm room. However, after a moment of thought, I remembered that I didn't have enough ingredients to make dinner. There was a convenience store about a ten-minute walk from the school campus that I frequented regularly.

It was around 5:00 PM, which meant the sun was about to set.

In a relatively short amount of time, I arrived at the convenience store. Picking up a basket, I began to browse the aisles, starting in the fresh produce section. Selecting a variety of produce like: tomatoes, peppers, and onions before heading to the meat section. Amelia had a strange obsession with pork chops; she would throw a fit if I left without picking some up. The vegetables, on the other hand, were for Jeffrey, who didn't eat meat—understandable, considering he was part goat.

As I moved over to the canned food section, I spotted someone rummaging through the pre-packaged meals. After a few seconds of watching her, she finally noticed me, and her nonchalant expression shifted to one of annoyance. With her arms folded, she marched up to me, and for a moment, I thought I was going to be hit.

"What are you doing here?"

What? Is she trying to make conversation? Who would have thought Ava Morel would speak to me as if I weren't dirt? Had she finally recognized me as a real person? No, I had to stay focused; she was fickle and could quickly go from passive to aggressive in a matter of seconds.

"I'm just shopping for ingredients to make dinner."

"What? Is your roommate a chef or something?"

"No, I'm the one who does the cooking."

"Pfft! As if! You cook? I'd sooner believed it if you said you were a unicorn."

"Why is it so hard to believe? Back home, I did most of the cooking since Nina was always busy."

"Nina? Who's that?"

"I guess you could say she's my mother."

"Funnily enough, I can't picture you having a mother."

"So, what are you doing?" I asked. "It looked like you were searching for pre-packaged meals."

"Oh, yeah. I'll have to go somewhere else though; all the food they have here sucks."

"How about you join me for dinner then?"

"W-What? Are you serious? I can't do that."

"Why not? I'm already cooking for three people; one more won't make a difference." I could see she was on the fence about it; she probably didn't like the idea of getting a free meal. "Tell you what, you pay for half the items in my basket, and we can call it a deal."

"If you're sure about this, then fine."

After looking around the store for a few more items, Ava and I went to the cashier to ring up our total. We walked out with two white plastic bags filled with ingredients for dinner.

"How'd the meeting go with you and the other leaders?" Ava asked as we walked back to the dormitories.

"It went well; we really hit it off. They are good people, and I feel like we had a connection."

"Hmm, that makes sense, considering how charming Julius is and how open and wonderful Katherine is."

"Pffff! Yeah, right. She looked like she wanted to murder me."

"I can imagine given your rotten personality, the three of you in a room together must have been a nightmare. Poor Liam. Katherine has always been the serious type."

"You sound like you know her quite well."

"Well, yes. Noble families like ours maintain close relationships."

"That's surprising. I didn't know you were a noble."

"Figured you didn't know. No one would treat me the way you have if they knew I was a noble," she said, shooting me a glare. "Well, allow me to introduce myself in a way befitting a lady of House Morel." She bent her knees and lowered her body while lifting her skirts slightly.

"What was that?" I asked, a little confused.

"It's called a curtsy, you moron!"

"Jeez, what happened to the lady of House Morel?"

Ava swatted me on the head with her school bag. Glancing up at the sky, I spotted the breathtaking sight off the sunset in the distance. The view was spectacular.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?" I asked, a bit excited. "The way the fiery orange dominates the horizon is tantalizing. Just looking at it makes my heart race; it fills me with this indescribable sense of warmth..... I think it's what they call love!"

"Pfftt! Hahahahaha!"

Ava burst out laughing, clutching her stomach. She laughed so hard that tears streamed down her face until she collapsed to the ground, still giggling. I didn't think I had said anything weird. Did I have a strange expression on my face a moment ago?

"OH MY GOD!! YOU LOOK LIKE A WOLF STARING UP AT THE MOON!! HAHAHA! That's exactly what a werewolf would say. You're such a weirdo!"

Noble lady, my ass. From what I saw on TV, noble ladies were supposed to be polite and ladylike. What kind of lady kneels on the floor laughing? And she throws insults around without any regard for a person's feelings. Here I was pouring my heart out just for her to laugh in my face.

"Come on, get up. It's getting late."

"Hah! Just give me a moment. It's just that... I've never heard someone say they're in love with the sun before! Hahah—"

"Your underwear is showing again."

"W-What!!... You pervert!!"

Ava's face flushed red as she jumped to her feet and launched a full-blown fist at me. My hands were full from the bags, so I couldn't dodge or block unless I wanted to waste all the groceries we bought. I had no choice but to accept the punch to my stomach.

"That's what you get for being a pervert."

"It's not my fault! Your uniform skirt is way too short!"

"Whatever, let's just go."

Why the hell is she mad at me? I didn't even do anything wrong. This girl is the most unreasonable person I've ever met. It's like she never thinks logically; it's all emotions. Dealing with her is so frustrating.
