Grand Voyage : Surviving on a Ghost Ship-Chapter 109 - Expedition to the Glacier
Yang Yi gathered all the necessary supplies.
Afterwards, he went to the ship's cabin and spent 150 units of fabric to make three thick cotton coats for emergencies.
Once he finished, he headed towards Suna's room.
Since their preparations were nearly complete, it was about time to set off.
As he approached Suna’s room, he suddenly felt the temperature drop — by almost 10 degrees.
Outside the door, Suna stood wrapped in a robe, while a bright, basketball-sized fireball hovered at her fingertips in the distance.
“Fireball spell?”
Yang Yi was stunned.
Suna flicked her wrist, hurling the fireball towards the glacier beneath the Nightmare Star. Steam immediately erupted as seawater vaporised with a sharp hissing sound — just like a red-hot branding iron piercing into ice.
As the steam cleared, a large crater about 30 centimetres deep was revealed in the glacier. Melted seawater pooled inside, still boiling.
It hadn’t broken through completely, but if that attack had hit someone, they would probably be half-cooked!
After casting her spell, Suna’s damp hair frosted over with ice crystals.
Without a word, she rushed back into her room, leaving Yang Yi standing alone in the cold wind.
“Why is it that you learned Fireball, but I learnt something else?” No one could answer him.
Sighing, he walked to Suna’s door and knocked twice. The door wasn’t locked, and inside, he could hear the sound of water splashing in a panic.
“I’m still taking a bath!” Suna called out.
Yang Yi had no intention of going in. He simply informed her that everything was nearly ready, and it was time to depart. He told her to double-check her supplies.
An hour later, they met at the ship’s bow for a final equipment check.
They ensured they had fresh water, food, firewood, fuel, potions, distilled liquor, weapons, sleeping bags, tents, and other essentials.
Additionally, Suna had made 200 simple incendiary bombs using oil, consuming 100 litres of it. The remaining 800 were enough to help the Nightmare Star break free — if they weren’t disrupted by Ice Nest Worms.
After finalising their preparations, they got ready to set out.
Suna’s gear included a hunting bow (slightly degraded), armour-piercing arrows, a longsword, and a small round shield. She was dressed in a down jacket and a fire-wool sweater.
Yang Yi’s loadout remained the same — his usual weapons and potions. He wore a thick cotton coat and a fire-wool sweater. As for his spiderweb gloves, they had unfortunately been burned to ashes when he read the book.
Their food supply was enough for about a week, which should be sufficient since the Ice Nest Worms' hive wasn’t too far away. Besides, they wouldn’t take their eyes off the Nightmare Star for too long.
With their final checks complete, Yang Yi gave an order to the Bone Arm: every three hours, it was to add wood to the Life Fireplace, ensuring the fire never went out.
That way, even if the Ice Nest Worms attacked, they would be burned to ash by the furnace’s flames.
After setting everything in order, the two climbed down the ship’s ladder and headed northeast.
However, after only about a hundred metres, Yang Yi suddenly stopped and blocked Suna’s path.
He had spotted a swarm of Ice Nest Worms.
They were surging in from the northeast at high speed.
Yang Yi and Suna immediately crouched down, watching as the Ice Nest Worms rushed towards the Nightmare Star and dove straight into the Life Fireplace.
The creatures always prioritised attacking fire or high-temperature objects.
Only when there were no flames would they target warm-blooded beings with body temperatures around 37 degrees.
Five minutes later, the swarm had been completely incinerated, turning into grey snowflakes that gently drifted from the sky.
Yang Yi recalled the previous attack intervals of the Ice Nest Worms and did a quick calculation.
Based on past incidents, the swarm attacked approximately every 22 hours.
At least so far, the pattern had remained consistent.
Using this information, Yang Yi and Suna could attempt to avoid the Ice Nest Worms altogether — so long as they stayed out of their direct path toward the Nightmare Star.
A 37-degree body temperature versus a distant "volcano" (the Life Fireplace) — clearly, the "volcano" was the more urgent threat.
With that in mind, the two continued forwards.
…
Ten hours later, the two travelled about 40 kilometres northeast, taking a short break midway.
To Yang Yi’s surprise, Suna did not slow them down.
Her base attributes had likely all reached the average value of 5 for an adult human, and her agility had even hit 6.
It seemed that dissecting aberrant creatures was physically demanding work. Moreover, she frequently had to move and adjust various instruments, stir giant cauldrons, and perform other strenuous tasks. Her training intensity was not low — in fact, she had been constantly exercising, leading to rapid attribute growth.
Yang Yi glanced at the temperature.
At that point, the lowest temperature had already dropped below -40°C. He could clearly feel a powerful cold current coming from the northeast.
The wind wasn’t strong, just a gentle breeze, but the chill was bone-piercing.
In such extreme conditions, a thick cotton coat and a fire-wool sweater weren’t enough to keep warm; one would still shiver uncontrollably from the cold.

Fortunately, Yang Yi had previously found a large supply of distilled liquor, which provided excellent cold resistance. It worked so well that drinking too much even made one sweat — sweating in the dead of winter!
Suna hated the cold, so she drank some as well, despite disliking the taste.
At first, unaware of its potency, she took a big gulp. Her face turned bright red, and her skin felt like it was burning. She immediately squatted down in pain.
After removing her down jacket and rubbing her face with snow, she finally recovered.
From then on, she didn’t dare drink too much, only taking a small sip when she felt particularly cold.
The two continued forwards.
After another two kilometres, Yang Yi suddenly stopped and held Suna back.
All along the way, he had been using his Third Eye to scout.
Every 2,000 steps or so, he would glance northeast with it.
Just now, at the edge of his vision, he had spotted several rows of human ice sculptures.
They were about 17 kilometres away.
Due to his limited field of view, Yang Yi couldn’t determine their total number, but just within his sight, there were already over a hundred, arranged in multiple rows.
They were all naked, crouching in the freezing snow, their bodies marked with strange deep-blue tattoos.
Their posture was identical — arms wrapped around their knees, heads buried between their legs, huddled in a squat. Occasionally, they trembled slightly, shaking loose bits of frost.
“What did you find?” Suna asked.
Holding a torch in her left hand, her vision barely extended more than ten metres — she had no way of seeing what lay ahead.
Only Yang Yi, with his Third Eye, could pierce through the white mist and see far into the distance.
“There are many frozen people up ahead... and they’re still alive.”
Yang Yi spoke in a low voice.
He observed them for a minute and confirmed that they simply remained crouched, shivering occasionally, but otherwise motionless.
He then withdrew his gaze, put on his blindfold, and his expression grew serious.
“These frozen people must be Ice Nest Cultists...” Yang Yi concluded.
This fit his prior assumptions about the cultists — fanatics who refused to wear clothes, choosing instead to revel in the extreme cold, naked in the icy wilderness.
Their behavior wasn’t much different from those pyromaniacal Fire Worshipers, except one group sought heat while the other sought cold.
It also meant that the temperature ahead would plummet even further. Otherwise, the Ice Nest Cultists wouldn’t be gathered there.
The temperature could drop below -100°C!
In such extreme cold, even a single breath could cause frostbite in the respiratory tract!
Even the carbon dioxide they exhaled might freeze solid!
It was unclear whether distilled liquor could fend off such deadly cold.
“What’s the plan? Should we rest first or keep moving?” Suna asked.
She didn’t look too bad, but Yang Yi had checked the crew status panel — her stamina was barely above 40. Resting before proceeding would be the safer option.
So, he replied, “There’s no need to rush.
Let’s take a break, eat something, and then find a suitable spot to set up camp. Once we’re fully rested, we’ll decide our next move.”
For the next part of the journey, neither of them planned to use torches or start a fire.
They couldn’t risk attracting the Ice Nest Worms.
