Chapter 34: Undead Horde

Roy unconsciously took a step back when he saw the hand peer out from the gate.

And then, a skinny bipedal creature of over six feet with ash-white skin, pointed ears, a hunched back, and red-black eyes stepped out of the gate.

The upright creature’s limbs were longer than usual, with its claws almost touching the ground.

’I just woke up a minute ago, for screaming out loud. Is that... a monster, or an undead?’ Roy’s mind was fully alert. Every ounce of sleep had been washed away from his psyche.

"That is a Strange Undead... the White Ghoul," Master Abraham said, answering the thoughts of those present with an expression that was both calm and serious.

"Undead..." Roy could hardly believe his ears.

The abyss creature raised its shoulders slightly and moved awkwardly, raising its head to the sky and opening its mouth to reveal a set of sharp, bloodied, yellow teeth. A long black tongue extended out from its mouth and tasted the air, moving as though it was alive on its own.

Roy wasn’t anywhere near it yet, but a deep chill ran down his spine.

And even worse, two more of the strange undead stepped out from the gate.

"M-master... isn’t there supposed to be only one strange monster from a Rank 1 Gate? Isn’t that three?" Roy asked, deeply concerned.

"I never said only one strange monster can emerge from a Rank 1 Gate. However, there won’t be any Mutated, unless they grow after they come out."

Master Abraham used this time to explain to Roy. He had already started the vehicle’s engine and began driving off.

’This is no time for lectures, goddammit!’ He thought, found a place to sit, and then buckled the seatbelt.

"And the final boss is the strange monster closest to the next level," Donald added after he sat down too.

The C-Class Executioner glanced at the two brothers.

"Donald, you’ll man the vehicle. There are turrets available. Although bullets don’t stop undead, they will slow them down long enough for Roy and me to finish them off."

"Me?!" Roy exclaimed. "I can’t kill undead, and I can barely harm a weak beast without your help."

"You’re coming with me. That’s final."

Master Abraham suddenly stood up from the driver’s seat, letting go of the steering wheel, but the military vehicle continued forward on autopilot.

Roy’s face stared with horror.

He heard what Master Abraham said, but had his attention more on the video footage of the reanimated beasts and monsters walking out from the Rank 1 Gate.

Roy shook his head.

"I... I can’t do it. I will die."

And considering he could simply grow stronger by helping Pierre advance and getting a skilled executioner to help him level up, why did he have to face the abyss creatures directly?

Master Abraham acted as though he didn’t hear what Roy said and tapped his shoulder, saying, "Suit up, kid."

"Roy, what the hell are you saying?" Donald turned to his younger brother and asked.

"If things get too complicated, Abraham will always be there to help. So don’t say shit like that.

"Have you forgotten you wanted to join an unofficial raid party? That would’ve been worse than this. You knew the risks and would’ve still considered it if that was what would help you grow stronger. Now here’s the safest option before you. You need that level of bravery now. This is what facing God’s Abyss is about. Get up and fight!"

Roy, filled with renewed courage, stood up and went to the back area as well.

Master Abraham was already in his stealth suit, so instead, he was oiling up the gears of his chainsword and rechecking his utility belt.

Roy changed into the stealth suit as quickly as he could and retrieved the netherstone dagger from the toilet sink. He had left it there after washing the blood off it.

A few minutes later, the APC ground to a halt about a hundred meters away from the gate.

Master Abraham and Roy jumped down from the vehicle. The former grabbed onto the handle of the chainsword fastened to his back, while the latter held the black-red dagger.

The two stood ready, staring at the abyss creatures pouring out of the gate, already numbering over fifty.

But then, a floating darkness, cloaked in black, emerged last. The surrounding abyss creatures composed themselves in its presence and even bowed in accordance with their physiologies.

Master Abraham placed his left foot on a large rock before him and leaned forward. The early-morning sun didn’t hinder his vision, but he strained his eyes nonetheless.

"Master, isn’t it better if I use the pistol with explosive rounds since the undead are weak to fire?" Roy asked, having taken a large gulp. ’That is a real-life ghost for heaven’s sake!’

Master Abe voiced, ignoring Roy’s question, "That’s the Gate Boss. It’s been a long time since I encountered a wraith. They can be quite intelligent."

Right then, he straightened his back and let go of the chainsword’s handle, and instead, grabbed Roy’s left hand, surprising him.

"W-What?"

"Stay still," the Executioner said and used a high-tech handcuff to fasten Roy’s left hand to his right.

"What’s your current exp threshold?"

"Two thousand exp..."

Master Abraham grinned slightly.

"Good. That means Level 3 will be 3,000. Prepare your mind, kid. We’re not stopping until you’re at Level 4."

Alarm bells went off in Roy’s head. He protested, "But why do we need to fight them head-on?! We can stay at a distance and do all the killing with fire and explosives. Master, please!"

"When you let go of the fear, you’ll see that charging head-on can be fun too." Master Abraham gave a rare smile, but it only sent chills down Roy’s spine because it was far too malicious and sinister!

’Who’s looking for fun?! Donny made a psycho my mentor...’ Roy cried inwardly. He just realized that this C-Class Executioner had every means to end the battle from afar, but he enjoyed cutting up the abyss creatures and watching as the dark fury in their eyes died out.

"And try to keep up."

Before Roy could even think of a response, Master Abraham took off!

On the other side of the battlefield, the ghost had already spotted the duo and the vehicle and raised its black hand... and pointed at them.

The undead horde, silent and hungry, charged forward fearlessly.
