Chapter 252: Sun Island XXII

Cracks spread across the ice constructs. One tried to pull back, but Lyra cut its leg again. Rhys stepped in and struck the same spot. The construct broke apart and fell to the ground.

On the other side, Caria slammed her axe down hard. Aria followed with a strong wind push. The second construct lost balance and shattered into chunks of ice.

The last construct rushed toward Sophia.

"Behind you!" Rhys shouted.

Puddle reacted fast. "Puddle stop!"

It fired a Water Jet straight into the construct’s chest. The water froze instantly, slowing it down. Sophia stepped aside and fired a light spell into the frozen spot. The construct cracked and collapsed.

All three were gone.

The platform grew quiet again.

The guardian lowered its spear and stood still. The blue glow in its body softened.

"You acted as one," it said. "You protected the weak points. You supported each other. This is resolve."

The guardian raised its hand. The ice on the platform melted slightly, revealing a glowing symbol beneath.

"Your trial is complete," it said. "The peak will open to you."

Rhys relaxed his stance but stayed alert. "So we passed?"

"Yes," the guardian replied. "Proceed. What waits above is not an enemy to defeat—but a power to understand."

With that, the guardian stepped back. Its body slowly turned into ice again, sinking into the platform until nothing remained but the glowing path ahead.

The wind returned, but it felt lighter now.

Caria let out a breath. "Good. I’m tired of being tested."

Lyra sheathed her blades. "That was different. It wasn’t about strength."

Sophia smiled faintly. "It trusted us to work together."

Aria nodded. "That’s why it let us continue."

Puddle floated up happily. "Puddle passed test! Team passed test!"

Rhys looked up the path leading higher toward the peak. The way forward was now clear.

"Alright," he said. "Let’s finish this climb."

Together, they stepped onto the glowing path and continued toward the summit.

The glowing path felt warm under their feet, even through the snow. With every step forward, the cold wind weakened, as if the mountain itself was allowing them to pass.

They climbed in silence for a while. No beasts appeared. No traps triggered. It felt calm—but tense.

Lyra broke the silence. "This is too quiet."

Caria nodded. "Yeah. I don’t like when mountains go quiet."

Sophia looked around carefully. "I think the guardian cleared the way. Whatever is at the top... it’s waiting."

Puddle floated a little higher. "Big shiny thing soon?"

Rhys kept his eyes on the path. "Maybe. Or something that explains why this mountain is different."

The path slowly widened as they climbed. The snow thinned, and the ground beneath turned smooth, almost polished. Blue lines ran through the stone, glowing softly.

Aria stopped suddenly. "We’re close. I can feel it clearly now."

Ahead, the path opened into a wide summit platform. At the center stood a tall crystal pillar, glowing with steady blue-white light. The air around it hummed with power, but it didn’t feel hostile.

Caria stared. "So... that’s it?"

Sophia stepped forward carefully. "This isn’t like the guardians. This magic feels stable. Old. Calm."

Lyra scanned the area. "No enemies. No movement."

Puddle floated toward the crystal and stopped. "Strong... but not scary."

Rhys approached the pillar slowly. The light reacted to him, growing a little brighter.

A calm voice echoed, softer than the guardian’s.

"Those who reach the summit have already proven themselves."

Everyone froze.

The light shifted, forming a faint shape—simple, not solid. More like a presence than a body.

"You passed the trials of strength, unity, and resolve," the voice continued. "This mountain is not a weapon. It is a seal."

Aria frowned. "A seal?"

"Yes," the voice replied. "Something below sleeps. The mountain’s power exists to keep it contained."

Caria crossed her arms. "That sounds bad."

Sophia swallowed. "Very bad."

Rhys stayed calm. "Then why bring us here?"

"Because the seal is weakening," the voice said. "And the world below is changing."

The light pulsed once.

"You are not chosen to fight it now," the voice continued. "You are chosen to remember this place... and return when the time comes."

The crystal pillar glowed brighter, then released a soft wave of light that washed over the team.

Rhys felt knowledge settle into his mind—not words, but understanding.

The light faded.

The summit grew quiet again.

Lyra exhaled slowly. "So... this wasn’t the end."

Aria nodded. "It was a warning."

Puddle floated close to Rhys. "Big sleepy danger later?"

Rhys looked at his team. "Yes. Later."

He turned back toward the path they had climbed.

"For now, we remember this place," he said. "And we keep getting stronger."

Caria smiled. "Good. Because when ’later’ comes, I want to be ready."

Sophia nodded. "All of us will be."

They stood there for a moment longer, letting the meaning sink in.

Then the crystal pillar began to dim. The blue-white light slowly faded until it was no brighter than the glowing lines in the ground.

Aria noticed first. "The power is withdrawing."

Sophia nodded. "It’s sealing itself again."

The smooth stone beneath their feet shifted. The glowing lines moved, forming a clear path leading back down the mountain.

Lyra turned and looked behind them. "Guess that’s our way out."

Caria stretched her arms. "Good. My legs are done for today."

Puddle floated in a small circle. "No angry boom. That good."

Rhys took one last look at the summit. The crystal was still there, quiet and steady, like it was sleeping again.

"We’ll come back," he said calmly. "When we’re ready."

No one argued.

They began their descent together. The mountain felt different now—less hostile, almost neutral. The wind no longer pushed them back. The snow didn’t fight their steps.

As they went lower, the glow faded behind them, hidden once more by stone and cloud.

Lyra spoke quietly while they walked. "Do you think anyone else knows about this place?"

Aria shook her head. "Not like we do. Maybe some fragments. Stories."

Sophia adjusted her staff. "Then it’s our responsibility to remember."

Caria snorted. "Great. We climbed a death mountain and got homework."

Rhys allowed a small smile. "Information is power too."

Puddle floated beside him, calm now. "Team keep secret. Team get strong."

By the time they reached the lower slopes, the sky had begun to darken. The mountain peak vanished into the clouds above them, as if it had never existed.

But they all knew better.

They didn’t speak of it as they continued down.

Some truths were meant to wait.
