Final Life Online-Chapter 251: Sun Island XXI
They rested for a short time. Everyone drank water and checked their gear.
Caria sat on a rock and rolled her shoulders. "Next fight better be worth all this climbing."
Lyra looked at the path ahead. "The trail to the peak is exposed. No cover. If something attacks, we’ll see it coming—but we’ll also be seen."
Sophia nodded. "And magic travels far up here. Whatever is on that peak probably knows we’re coming."
Aria stood near the edge and watched the clouds move below. "That magic feels steady. Not wild like the beasts before. More... controlled."
Puddle floated close to the ground, quieter than usual. "Big place... big scary... but team strong."
Rhys stood up. "Alright. Break’s over."
The others rose with him.
They started moving again, following the narrow path toward the peak. Snow crunched under their boots, and the wind grew stronger with every step.
After some time, they noticed something ahead.
Lyra stopped suddenly. "Hold up."
In the snow, large footprints were pressed deep into the ground. They were fresh.
Caria frowned. "That’s not a beast footprint."
Sophia leaned closer. "Too clean. Too shaped."
Aria nodded slowly. "Someone—or something—walks upright."
Puddle tilted its head. "Not wolf. Not rock bear."
Rhys stared at the tracks. "So we’re not alone up here."
The path curved around a sharp bend. Beyond it, they could see stone pillars rising from the snow, arranged in a wide circle. At the center stood a tall platform, covered in ice and glowing faintly blue.
Caria tightened her grip on her axe. "That looks important."
Lyra whispered, "And dangerous."
Aria felt the air. "This is the source. The magic from the mountain."
Sophia swallowed. "So whatever’s guarding this place... is waiting for us there."
Rhys stepped forward, calm but alert. "Then we don’t rush. We move together, watch each other’s backs, and be ready for anything."
Puddle floated beside him, serious again. "Together."
They moved closer, step by step. The wind howled louder around the stone pillars, and the cold bit through their clothes.
As they entered the circle, the glowing lines on the platform grew brighter.
Lyra whispered, "I don’t like this. It feels like we crossed a line."
Caria snorted. "Good. That means we’re in the right place."
Suddenly, the light flared.
The snow around the platform lifted into the air, spinning slowly. The ground trembled.
Sophia grabbed her staff. "Something’s activating!"
From the center of the platform, a figure rose.
It was tall and humanoid, made of ice and dark stone. Blue light flowed through cracks in its body, forming clear lines like armor. Its eyes burned with a steady glow.
Aria spoke quietly. "A guardian... but not like the others."
The figure stepped forward, each step heavy but controlled.
A deep voice echoed across the circle.
"Those who climb the mountain... state your purpose."
Caria blinked. "Uh... that thing talks."
Rhys stepped forward and lowered his sword slightly, showing respect but not weakness.
"We seek the source of this mountain’s power. We’ve passed the trials below."
The guardian’s glowing eyes fixed on Rhys.
"Power is not taken. It is earned."
Lyra muttered, "Figures."
The guardian raised one arm. Ice formed into a long spear in its hand.
"Prove your resolve," it said.
Sophia swallowed. "So it’s a test."
Puddle floated closer to Rhys, nervous but ready. "Big talky enemy..."
Rhys lifted his blade again. "You heard it. Stay sharp. This one won’t rush us."
The guardian took its stance, spear pointed forward.
The wind suddenly died down.
For a brief moment, everything was silent.
Then the guardian moved.
It didn’t charge. It stepped forward slowly, testing them. The spear scraped against the stone, leaving a thin line of ice behind.
"Careful," Lyra said. "It’s measuring us."
The guardian thrust the spear forward without warning.
Rhys blocked it with his sword. The impact sent a shock through his arms, forcing him back a step.
"Strong," Rhys said. "Very strong."
The guardian twisted the spear and swept it low. Caria jumped back, the ice edge barely missing her boots.
"Okay, that was close," she said, grinning anyway.
Aria raised her hands and sent a controlled wind blast at the guardian’s side. It hit—but the guardian barely moved.
Sophia followed with light magic, striking the cracks in its armor. The light spread, but the cracks quickly sealed again.
"It’s repairing itself," Sophia said. "Slowly, but it is."
Puddle floated higher. "Hard enemy..."
The guardian lifted its free hand. Ice formed in the air and dropped as sharp shards.
"Scatter!" Rhys shouted.
They moved apart as the ice crashed down, shattering on the ground.
Lyra rushed in next, fast and low. She struck at the guardian’s knee joint. This time, the ice cracked and stayed cracked.
"There!" she shouted. "Joints don’t heal as fast!"
Caria didn’t wait. She charged and slammed her axe into the same spot. The guardian stumbled one step.
The guardian reacted instantly. It slammed the spear into the ground. A wave of frost rushed outward.
Rhys raised his blade and braced himself. Aria pushed against the frost with wind, slowing it enough for everyone to stay on their feet.
Sophia looked at Rhys. "It’s not trying to kill us."
Rhys nodded. "It’s testing teamwork."
The guardian straightened and spoke again.
"Strength alone is insufficient."
It spread both arms. Ice rose from the platform, forming three smaller constructs that moved toward the team.
Lyra cursed softly. "Adds."
Rhys raised his voice. "Same as before. Pairs. Don’t let anyone get isolated."
Puddle glowed faintly. "Puddle support!"
A soft golden ring spread from Puddle—Gleaming Halo—keeping everyone steady.
Caria laughed. "Alright then. Let’s show it."
Rhys took a deep breath. "Lyra, you and I take the left construct. Caria and Aria, the right one. Sophia, support everyone from the middle."
Lyra nodded. "Got it."
The constructs moved quickly, ice cracking beneath their feet.
Rhys and Lyra struck together. He blocked one swipe while she slashed at its leg. The construct staggered.
Caria and Aria did the same on the other side, pushing the construct back with axes and wind blasts.
Sophia focused on keeping the group healed. Golden light from Puddle’s Gleaming Halo combined with her magic, keeping everyone steady despite the cold and constant attacks.
The guardian watched calmly, adjusting its stance. "Coordination is key. Alone, you fail. Together, you endure."
Rhys shouted, "Keep pressuring them! Don’t let the constructs regroup!"
The team moved as one. Lyra and Rhys struck, Caria and Aria hit with a flurry of attacks, Sophia and Puddle provided support, and the constructs began to crack.
