Chapter 253: Sun Island XXIII

They reached a flatter stretch of the trail and slowed their pace. The air was thicker here, warmer than the peak, and their breath no longer fogged as heavily.

Caria stopped and dropped onto a rock. "Okay. Five minutes. If anyone argues, I’m hitting them."

No one argued.

Sophia sat beside her and checked her mana focus. "We used a lot up there. Not dangerously, but enough that we shouldn’t push tonight."

Lyra leaned against a stone pillar and scanned the surroundings out of habit. "No movement. No tracks. Looks like the mountain really did clear us out."

Aria closed her eyes briefly. "The pressure is gone. Whatever sleeps below is sealed... for now."

Puddle dipped closer to the ground and rested, glowing faintly. "Puddle tired. Big magic makes head fuzzy."

Rhys nodded. "You did good up there."

Puddle brightened a little. "Puddle helpful."

After a short rest, they moved again, more carefully now. The trail widened into familiar terrain—the lower mountain paths they had climbed earlier.

Lights appeared in the distance.

Lyra squinted. "Campfires."

Caria stood straighter. "Outpost or adventurers?"

Sophia focused her senses. "Adventurers. Small group. Nothing aggressive."

Rhys considered for a moment. "We pass quietly. No reason to talk."

They adjusted their path and moved around the distant camp. The sounds of laughter and clanking gear drifted faintly through the cold air, unaware of what lay above them.

As night fully settled, the stars came out, sharp and bright.

Aria looked up. "The mountain looks normal now."

Rhys followed her gaze. From below, there was nothing special about it—just another tall, dangerous peak among many.

"Good," he said. "That means the seal is holding."

They continued down until the terrain flattened into the forest edge. The cold eased, replaced by the familiar smell of pine and earth.

Caria stretched again. "Next stop: real food."

Lyra smirked. "And sleep."

Sophia smiled softly. "And planning."

Puddle floated ahead, cheerful again. "Warm place! Soft ground!"

Rhys led them forward into the trees.

Behind them, far above and hidden by cloud, the mountain stood silent—watching, waiting.

They followed the forest path until the trees opened into a small clearing they recognized from their climb up. A shallow stream ran through it, and flat stones made it a good place to stop for the night.

Rhys raised a hand. "We camp here."

No one complained.

Caria dropped her pack and sat down hard. "I’m not moving again unless something is on fire."

Lyra checked the area one last time, then relaxed. "Clear."

Sophia set her staff aside and began preparing a simple barrier spell, nothing flashy—just enough to warn them if something came close.

Aria gathered dry branches and helped Caria start a fire. The flames crackled, pushing back the night chill.

Puddle hovered near the warmth and hummed softly. "Fire nice."

They ate in silence at first, the kind that came from shared exhaustion rather than discomfort.

After a while, Caria spoke. "You know... if we told anyone about what’s up there, they’d never believe us."

Lyra nodded. "Or worse. They’d try to reach it."

Sophia looked into the fire. "And that would weaken the seal."

Rhys didn’t answer right away. He watched the flames, thinking.

"We don’t tell anyone," he said finally. "Not now. Maybe not ever."

Aria agreed. "Some knowledge isn’t meant to spread."

Puddle bobbed gently. "Secret place. Team secret."

One by one, they settled down to rest. The forest was quiet, broken only by the fire and the stream nearby.

As Rhys lay back and looked up at the stars through the branches, he felt the faint memory of the summit still in his mind—not fear, not urgency, just certainty.

Something slept beneath that mountain.

And when it woke, they would be ready.

Rhys stayed awake a little longer than the others.

Lyra took first watch, sitting on a rock at the edge of the clearing. Her eyes moved slowly, checking the trees and listening to the forest sounds.

Caria was already asleep, snoring lightly near the fire.

Sophia rested with her staff beside her, the barrier spell faint but steady. Aria sat quietly for a while, sharpening a blade, then finally lay down as well.

Puddle drifted close to Rhys. "You not sleep yet?"

"In a minute," Rhys said quietly.

He looked around the camp one more time. Everything felt normal. Safe.

Eventually, he closed his eyes.

The night passed without trouble.

No monsters came. No strange sounds broke the quiet. The barrier never triggered.

When morning came, sunlight filtered through the trees, and birds began to call.

Caria woke first and stretched. "Ahh... still alive. Good start."

Lyra stood down from watch and nodded. "Nothing all night."

Sophia sat up and rolled her shoulders. "Mana’s recovering well."

Aria looked toward the mountain, barely visible through the trees. "It’s quiet."

Puddle floated up, energetic again. "Morning! Puddle ready!"

Rhys stood and tightened his gear. "We head back to the city. Report the dungeon clear. Leave out the rest."

Everyone understood.

They packed up camp and moved out together, leaving the clearing behind.

Behind them, the forest closed in. The fire pit cooled. The stream kept flowing.

The path back was easier than the climb. Snow and ice were gone, replaced by dirt trails and roots. Birds called in the trees, and the air was warmer. It felt almost peaceful compared to the trials above.

Caria jogged ahead a little, stretching her legs. "Feels weird to just walk without worrying about being attacked."

Lyra smirked. "Enjoy it while it lasts."

Sophia walked beside Rhys. "We should still be careful. The mountain’s seal may hold, but danger could appear anywhere."

Aria stayed close to the stream, listening. "Even the calm forests can hide threats. But yes... nothing like before."

Puddle floated ahead, inspecting every tree and rock. "All quiet. Puddle happy."

Hours passed, and the sun climbed higher. The group reached the edge of the forest, where the land opened toward the roads leading to the city. Smoke from chimneys rose in the distance.

Caria grinned. "Finally. Civilization."

Lyra relaxed. "And people who won’t try to eat us."

Rhys looked at the city ahead. "We report the dungeon clear, but we keep the mountain a secret. Only those who were there need to know what we learned."

Sophia nodded. "Agreed."

Aria added, "We’ll remember the summit and what sleeps below. That’s enough for now."

Puddle floated near Rhys, looking proud. "Team strong. Team smart."

Rhys smiled. "Yes. Together, we’re ready for whatever comes next."
