Chapter 75: An eye for an eye.

Leilani.

I wanted to scream at his face, to scratch at his skin until there was no smile left and until he was bleeding all over the place, but I couldn’t even bring myself to move. Besides the ropes holding me down, I felt weak.

Too weak.

I grunted; "You’ll pay for this."

"That has been your mantra ever since you returned from the dead months ago. And I’ve still not paid for shit." He drawled cockily, his eyes glazing with amusement and mischief. "If anything, I’ve been the one winning... and I’ll continue to win over you for as long as you live."

For as long as I lived...

That was not just a threat, it was a claim.

I sighed, swallowed back my retort and closed my eyes, letting the pain wash over me. When I snapped my eyes back open moments later, it wasn’t just Caelum I found by the door but Kael too. He had conflicted emotions in his eyes as they roved over my shaking frame, and then he turned to Caelum, asking;

"Don’t you think that’s enough? She looks pale and blue... and I don’t think Chalice needs that much blood."

When he spoke up, only one word stuck out to me: Chalice.

She was the reason they were doing this to me. The reason they were draining me dry, uncaring if I lived or died.

Of course, who would it be for?

I gritted my teeth in rage. Tears burned at the corners of my eyes but I refused to let them drop. I didn’t falter even as my body shook with exhaustion and pain.

I drawled; "You’re doing this for Chalice?"

"Of course!" Caelum snapped. "Or did you think I woke up one morning and suddenly began craving your blood or something?"

I shuddered.

Goddess, I should be used to things like this by now. I should not be affected by words like this... but I couldn’t help it. I couldn’t control the way it twisted the knife deeper into my chest or the way it made my heart feel like it was being wrung out.

My eyes snagged onto his, and onto the maniacal smile gracing his features. And when he tipped his head back and laughed so loudly, I nearly lost it. Or maybe I did lose it.

"You made Chalice lose our baby. She’s been haemorrhaging for hours because small abnormal tissues have been discovered in her body as a side effect of her miscarriage. And do you know who caused that? You!" He growled, earning himself a chuckle from my end.

My chuckle soon grew into full blown laughter, because Jesus, I couldn’t believe that they could be Alphas and still be so stupid.

I snorted; "Right!"

"Yeah, right!" He sassed back.

"And in return, we’ve decided that you should give back all the blood she’s lost... as that way you can make up for what you did to her." Kael said slowly, sounding almost like he was carefully picking his words, his voice shaking with something that felt like despair.

But it didn’t matter now. Nothing did. Not even the pitiful expression on his face.

Zevran was nowhere to be found—not that it mattered.

I bit down on my tongue so hard that the metallic taste of blood filled my mouth. My head was whoozy, my eyes fluttering shut, as if unable to keep itself open for a few more minutes.

My heart ached so badly, I wanted to rip it out. And do you know what was worse than having to watch them drain me for Chalice? The same Chalice who was never pregnant to begin with?

The fact they were not even remorseful. There was not a sign of remorse on their faces as they sized me up, Caelum clucking his tongue while he muttered;

"Also, we’re getting married to Chalice this weekend, and while you think this is enough punishment for hurting her, it’s not. So to that effect, we won’t be rejecting you until we’re back from our honeymoon, because we want you to feel it whenever we make love to your sister. We want you to experience agony like never before whenever we’re intimate with her. And that is our final punishment for you."

"To seal the deal, we’re also inviting you to the wedding, and when you come we’ll drop the charges." Kael chirped in, looking at everything but my face.

I snorted.

Punishment....

To seal the deal...

Blah blah blah!

I shook my head vehemently, hating myself for having to listen to their garbage words. And hating them more for putting me through so much misery.

Caelum caught me shaking my head and turned to me, whilst tilting his head to the side as he snapped; "What, no? You aren’t going to come? You do not wish to come? Do you know what will happen to you when we press charges? Or do you think we’re not the reason you’ve not been summoned to court for this long?"

At that, I swung my head back to meet his gaze, and the iciness I found in them had my breath hitching. But I quickly shook it off and snarled; "I’m not scared of being charged!"

"You’re impossible!" Now it was Kael who snapped. He growled; "After everything we’ve done for you, this is all you have to say? That you’re not scared of being charged? Are you even sensible?" He yelled, but I didn’t listen. I couldn’t listen. I was beyond reasoning.

My vision was blacking out with each passing moment and I knew... goddess I knew that I couldn’t hold on for much longer.

However, Caelum’s insensitive words wouldn’t stop ringing in my head. His; "I wanted something from you and I took it. I don’t fucking care how you feel about it as long as I want it. That’s you ’donating’ it to me." wouldn’t stop echoing at the back of my skull over and over again.

And I wanted— no, needed— to take something from him before I blacked out.

"Alphas, we’ve gotten the entire twelve bags. What do we do with her now?" The nurse’s voice flitted into my ear and I turned quickly to watch her as she stashed the remaining blood bags into the cooler.

She flinched at my gaze but didn’t stop. Instead, she kept bowing to Kael and Caelum, waiting for their response.

"Take one more!" Caelum snapped and I gasped.

But for the first time that evening, remorse showed on Kael’s face. He quickly shook his head in panic, his voice dropping a few notches as he turned to his brother.

"She looks like she’s about to pass out." He said to him, "if she dies, her blood will be on our hands. And you don’t want that do you?"

Caelum flashed an impatient frown in my direction, dissatisfaction showing on his face as he turned to his brother. He shrugged dismissively then nodded; "I wanted to teach her a lesson but you’re right. She sure looks like a ghost."

Kael didn’t waste any more time and waved to the nurse. "Untie her!" He ordered; and I watched on in silence as she immediately did as told.

However, just as the last ropes were loosened from around my wrist, I rose to my feet, ignoring my drowsiness and the pain all over my body.

Caelum smirked when he saw me standing, his smile broadening as he commented; "You see, she isn’t so weak! She can even still stan—"

But before the entire sentence could slip out of his mouth, I swung my fist so fast and struck him hard in the face. He staggered back, his eyes widening when they latched at me.

"You—!"

I smirked; "You said I’d donated my blood to you, Caelum. Now, watch as you’ll donate your tooth to me!" And with that, I drove my fist one more time into his face until a crunching noise was made and blood filled his mouth.

He spat out his blood, and sure with it was one tooth. I smirked again. "Now, we’re even."

I vaguely heard him cursing loudly. vaguely heard the ruckus in the room, but I was too weak to respond and too drained to make out words. But despite these concerning issues, I felt a strange sense of satisfaction.

I smiled as I crumpled to the floor, letting the peaceful darkness envelop me.
