Chapter 1413: New Article Recommendation: [The Beautiful Countryside of the Farmer’s Daughter-in-Law]_5
As she spoke, she deliberately glanced at Aunt Guihua, then at her husband who was trying to stay out of the women’s dispute and was busily continuing to harvest the wheat. The implication was clear without saying a word.
It was like poking a hornet’s nest. Not only did Sang Ye’s anger flare up, ready to teach Widow Li a lesson, but Aunt Guihua, who was always lovingly close with her husband, also became furious. She immediately threw down her sickle, rolled up her sleeves and lunged at Widow Li, "Widow Li, I’m going to fight you to the death!"

"Ah——"
A sharp scream echoed across the empty fields, startling the small birds foraging in the bushes into flying away with a flurry of wings.
Widow Li clutched her face, where several patches of skin had been clawed off, burning with pain. She looked terrified at Aunt Guihua who was on top of her, cursing foully while continuing to search for places to land more blows. Widow Li was nothing like her earlier boisterous self.
Sang Ye, who had been about to retaliate, was completely baffled. She had not anticipated that a single glance from Widow Li would infuriate Aunt Guihua so much, nor had she expected Aunt Guihua to actually throw herself at Widow Li and start a fight.
She stood there, eyeing the incredibly fierce Aunt Guihua, unsure whether to go forward and offer some insincere words of peace or to sneakily join in, helping Aunt Guihua give the continually screaming Widow Li a good beating and vent their shared fury.
"You shameless witch with no decency, I’ll teach you to spew filth! I’ll teach you to spew filth!"
Aunt Guihua, unable to find a spot on Widow Li’s face to hit, grabbed her messy hair and slammed it down hard into the dry, hard ground several times, leaving Widow Li dizzy and almost unconscious.
No wonder Aunt Guihua was so enraged; she and her husband, Zhao Shugen, had been married for over twenty years, and their relationship had always been very good, hardly ever fighting. If Widow Li’s words had been aimed only at Sang Ye, Aunt Guihua might at most have reprimanded Widow Li a few times for justice’s sake. However, Widow Li had slandered her own husband, how could the usually hot-tempered Aunt Guihua swallow such an insult?
"Help—she’s killing me—help—"
Widow Li’s slender body lacked the strength to fight back against the much stronger Aunt Guihua pressing down on her. Knowing she had stirred Aunt Guihua’s fury and was not going to come out of this well, Widow Li, fearful that Aunt Guihua might actually beat her to death in a fit of anger, began to panic. With what breath she could muster, she screamed desperately, hoping to draw the attention of people nearby to come and stop Aunt Guihua from nearly killing her.
These days, nearly the whole Village of Li was in the fields scrambling to harvest the wheat, and the wheat fields were close together, with several households working not far from each other.
Hearing Widow Li’s cries for help, the villagers couldn’t help abandoning their work and stood up to look in the direction of the noise. That’s when they realized that Aunt Guihua was pressing down on Widow Li and hitting her.
Most of the villagers of Village of Li had strong moral principles. They knew what sort of person Widow Li was and generally had little to do with her. But regardless of their feelings, Widow Li was after all the widow of the deceased Li Dazhu and their kin. They could not just stand by idly while she was being beaten, for fear of being laughed at by others who might think the Li Clan was easy to bully.
Seeing that Widow Li’s screams were growing fainter while Aunt Guihua showed no sign of stopping, the villagers, worried that the fight might end badly, began to put down their sickles and head over.
Widow Li’s cries for help were also heard by the Sang Family members, who were slightly further afield. However, they had no interest in intervening, so they continued to focus on their work, unaware that their daughter (sister) was also involved.
Mrs. Yu, Sang Ye’s sister-in-law, loved to watch the excitement. She stole a moment from her work, shaking her sore and tired arms, and squinted towards the commotion. Surprisingly, she spotted a familiar figure, and couldn’t help saying to her mother-in-law, Mu’s family, "Mom, it looks like our little sister-in-law is over there too. Should I go have a look, just to make sure she doesn’t get involved in such a scuffle?"
Mrs. Mu stopped cutting the wheat upon hearing this, stood up straight, and looked over to see that indeed, her own daughter was there too.
Although her daughter had only been home for a short two months and she didn’t know her very well, she was quite certain that her daughter was not one to enjoy watching a commotion. Her presence there clearly indicated she was involved in the matter.
With this thought, Mrs. Mu’s brows furrowed slightly, and she said to her husband and sons looking over, "Let’s all go have a look, and make sure that Yezi doesn’t get taken advantage of."
"Yeah, let’s all go. We can’t let our third sister be bullied," Honest Mulberry said without a second word, putting down his sickle and gesturing for his two sons, Sang Shu and Sang Lin, to follow.
While Honest Mulberry was known to be honest, it did not mean that he was foolish. Over the years, Widow Li had been at odds with his family, incessantly speaking ill of them. He was well aware of this, but since he had never caught her in the act, he had avoided confronting her directly, not wanting to be wrongly accused in turn.
Considering the recent village rumors about his daughter that were less than flattering, Honest Mulberry suspected that this time too, Widow Li was making unfounded accusations against his daughter. Yet, he didn’t know what had caused her to upset the Zhao family’s daughters-in-law and led to this dispute.
With her husband and parents-in-law gone, the two daughters-in-law of the Sang Family, Mrs. Yu and Mrs. Niu, also hurriedly followed, asking the children, who were equally eager to watch the excitement, to stay behind in the fields to rest.
It was unclear what might happen at the scene, and it seemed best not to let the children witness it, lest their eyes be sullied!
"Widow Li, if it weren’t for giving face to the others here today, I would’ve plucked those few hairs off your head! If you dare make up stories about my old Zhao family again, I won’t let you off as easily as I did today, pah!"
After spewing a mouthful in the midst of the villagers’ persuasion and pulling, Aunt Guihua, who had vented her anger, finally left Widow Li—barely breathing and unable to get up from the ground—alone after dropping a harsh word.
Hearing Aunt Guihua’s words, the onlookers realized that Widow Li had said something she shouldn’t have, provoking this unwelcome outcome. Although they felt some sympathy for Widow Li’s miserable state, it wasn’t appropriate to say Aunt Guihua was in the wrong, so after a few words of persuasion, they dispersed.
There was still a lot of work to be done in the fields, and no one had the leisure to meddle in a squabble between two women. As a result, no one knew that Yezi was also involved in the incident.
By the time the Sang Family arrived, only Yezi and two women close to Aunt Guihua were left, united in their anger, berating Widow Li who was propped up weakly, sitting on the ground. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
Any daughter-in-law living in the Village of Li, regardless of age, had most likely been the subject of Widow Li’s fabrications at some point.
Seeing Widow Li’s face filled with resentment, Yezi, despite feeling very angry, felt it inappropriate to act after Widow Li had been taught a lesson, as it could easily provoke annoyance from others.
Considering her not-so-good reputation in the village, not to mention for her own sake, she had to think of the reputation of the Sang Family. She stood by, not joining in, nor did she walk away immediately.
However, Aunt Guihua’s beating of Widow Li had indirectly allowed her to vent her own frustration. Having benefited from this act, it seemed only right to thank Aunt Guihua.
"Yezi, what in the world happened? Did you suffer any loss?" Mrs. Mu appeared beside her daughter, first looking at her with concern, then with an unsatisfied expression, she jerked her chin toward Widow Li, ready to give Widow Li a lesson if her daughter indicated she had been wronged.
