Chapter 73: Subject 109

*Two and a half years later. Year 1948.*

The arid plateau of the continent Tenebris stretched as far as the eye could see. The ground was dry, cracked, marked by ancient traces of battles. Demonic mana pulsed irregularly in the air. Violent gusts swept through the area, raising dust and debris. This region of the continent was officially classified as a monster zone, where any human, elven, or demi-beast presence was supposed to be nonexistent. Yet, a massive structure stood perched atop a mountain.

A imposing black castle was solidly anchored in the rock.

Its walls were made of basaltic stone with an irregular surface, engraved with complex geometric symbols with eroded edges. Flames of a dark green color, of constant height, burned in metal supports fixed to the walls, without any trace of residual fuel.

Stone sculptures, representing biomorphic forms with asymmetrical proportions and multiple appendages, were placed near the openings. A stagnant mist enveloped the foundations of the building. The air had a density and smelled of rotten flesh, more concentrated than the ambient air of Tenebris.

Inside, in a room plunged into almost total darkness, a hooded man was kneeling.

The hall was vast but quite empty. Underfoot, the floor was streaked with invocation circles engraved with monster and human blood, their deep grooves drawing geometries. It was undoubtedly the work of a powerful sorcerer. No furniture cluttered the space, except, at the exact center, an altar.

It was massive, carved from polished black stone. On its surface were skulls, bones, and a foul-smelling smoke rising from wax made of human fat. Blood was dripping from the altar, vivifying the invocation circle on the floor.

In front of this block of black stone floated a mist. It was not vapor, but an absence of light, a three-dimensional patch of shadow. At times, its contours stirred to suggest a face before the form immediately unraveled, becoming an indistinct swirl again.

From this presence emanated a physical pressure, an immaterial weight that thickened the air and made the few torches on the walls crackle. Even kneeling at a good distance, the hooded man was breathing with effort.

The demonic mana it emitted was far too intense.

"How long do you think I will wait for you to fail?" A cold voice resounded.

"Sorry, master, for some reason this Paladine discovered that one of the legendary families was on our side."

The creature remained silent, and the man, sweat on his forehead from fear, finally raised his head.

"The hour is approaching, master. I will undoubtedly do everything to open the gates of the Abyss."

The black mist did not react immediately. The silence that followed lasted several minutes.

"By what means?" asked the voice.

The man clenched his fists on his knees. "The Key of Solomon... I know where to find it. The grimoires are fragmentary, and the rituals are much more difficult, but with this key..."

In the room, the pressure increased by a perceptible degree. The torch flames flattened, stretching broken shadows over the circles on the floor. The man lowered his head again but continued, his voice becoming more insistent.

"Fine, as long as you find the Lemegeton. It will be easier."

"And also, master... I have found a vessel for you. It possesses an exceptional physical constitution. Its legendary lineage within him is dormant, atrophied by centuries of dilution, but it is there. The potential is... considerable. More than promising." 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

"Good, I await the results."

A palpable relief crossed the kneeling man. He bowed more deeply, his forehead against the cold stone.

"I thank you for your guidance and your patience... Archdemon of Midnight: Grimory."

The mist did not respond. The red symbols of the invocation circle pulsed a little faster. Then the black mist slowly dissipated.

...

Further in the castle, in another compartment, the atmosphere was different.

This area resembled a laboratory.

Narrow corridors led to a large room illuminated by luminous crystals arranged on the ceiling. Tables covered with parchments, scientific tools, and vials filled with strange liquids occupied the space. Silhouettes in lab coats moved silently, noting data on tablets.

At the center of the room stood a dark elf.

He had a hunched back and a tired posture. His black hair was unkempt. Deep dark circles from sleepless nights surrounded his red eyes. His slender fingers tapped rapidly on several floating holograms in front of him. Complex diagrams scrolled by, representing bodily structures, mana flows, and experiment results.

He sketched a sly smile.

"Well, well~, the tests are very conclusive. Subject 109."

His gaze turned toward a capsule located at the exact center of the laboratory.

Inside floated a human body.

A man with short black hair. His body was athletic, well-proportioned, but it had quite a few punch marks and burns. He seemed unconscious. Cables and magical seals were connected to the capsule, slowly injecting dark mana and unknown substances.

The translucent liquid in which he floated undulated gently.

The dark elf approached the capsule and placed a hand against the wall.

"A robust physique. Astonishing compatibility. And above all..." He slightly narrowed his eyes. "A legendary lineage..."

He brought up a new hologram showing his dormant lineage, signaled as unstable but exploitable. The data confirmed what he had hoped for a long time.

"This body can contain something far greater than we planned."

Another lab-coated silhouette approached.

"The risks remain high. It could destroy the subject..."

The dark elf raised his hand without even looking at him.

"Risks are part of the process. And Grimory has validated the direction."

At these words, the scientist fell silent immediately.

The dark elf walked around the capsule, observing every detail. The torso rose slowly. The heart beat regularly. The body was reacting well to the successive injections.

"This vessel is perfect. Even his will is... malleable."

He activated another screen. Recent readings appeared. They indicated abnormal peaks of resonance to the call of demonic mana.

"Just imagine a subject we can manipulate who has the powers of an Archdemon and a lineage blessed by a Seraph... A few more adjustments and he will be ready."
