Entangled in Midnight: Mrs Grant wants a Divorce-Chapter 148: Every Abandonment Has a Plan
As soon as Eleanor Winslow reached the entrance of the Grant Family’s old residence, a servant came up to her, saying that Old Madam Grant was waiting for her.
Eleanor instinctively looked at Adrian Grant.
Selene Keane had called her; she was probably waiting for him now.
"Go ahead, Grandma is waiting for you." Adrian motioned for Eleanor to follow him, "There’s no rush on Mom’s side."
Adrian discreetly glanced at the servant.
The servant immediately said, "Madam, please come this way. Old Madam has eagerly been awaiting your return!"
These words made it difficult for Eleanor to refuse, so she decided to first go and chat with Old Madam Grant before heading over to Selene.
She walked a bit and suddenly noticed Adrian wasn’t following her.
"Madam, what seems to be the matter?" The servant saw her stop, "Are you looking at these plum blossoms? Old Madam planted them for you, saying they’d cheer you up in the winter when there are fewer flowers."
Eleanor remembered Old Madam Grant’s kind demeanor and quickened her pace.
This was the Grant family; Adrian couldn’t possibly get lost.
...
The direction where Selene Keane and Old Madam Grant lived was opposite, and Adrian headed west alone.
Selene seated in the main position of the living room, softened her gaze when she spotted Adrian returning, "Why are you back? Are you willing to come see your mother?"
"Weren’t you the one who asked Eleanor to come back?" Adrian sat down beside Selene.
Selene’s gaze became sharp, "Did you come back in her stead? Where is Eleanor?"
She stood up and glanced behind Adrian, but didn’t see Eleanor.
"If there’s anything to discuss, talk to me."
Adrian appeared intent on not giving Selene a chance to trouble Eleanor.
"Adrian, I called for Eleanor! Is she too afraid to face me, sending you to placate me?" Selene immediately flared up, slamming the table, "How dare she intervene in other people’s family affairs?"
"Are you talking about the Hawthorne family matter?" Adrian asked calmly.
"What else?"
"Then you should know too, blocking the Hawthorne people from our doorstep was my doing, my decision."
"Adrian!" Selene knew it but hearing it from Adrian himself still made her furious, "Even now, you’re defending Eleanor? Do you know how embarrassed I was when Cherry Chambers came to see me? My daughter-in-law encouraging someone else’s daughter-in-law to oppose her family, even clinging to the child. It’s outrageous!"
Adrian chuckled, his face practically saying ’I’m indeed defending her, so what?’
"Bring her to see me, immediately!" Selene saw Adrian unmoved and was about to call Eleanor.
With her daughter-in-law not coming to see her and her son going against her, Selene felt abandoned by the world, unable to teach anyone!
"Eleanor is with Grandma." Adrian leisurely reminded, "She should be by Grandma’s side now."
Selene’s movement suddenly halted, looking at Adrian in disbelief.
"You—did you do it on purpose? Knowing I wanted to see Eleanor, she goes running to the old lady to hide!"
With no husband now, living in the Grant family, Selene had to mind Old Madam Grant and Old Master Grant.
Selene was so angry she took a deep breath.
After a moment, she suddenly said, "It seems you really don’t want to divorce Eleanor, intending to keep her by your side with this sly tactics?"
Adrian lifted his eyelids slightly at the word ’sly tactics,’ a cold glint flashing in his eyes.
"Adrian, do you think doing all this will matter?"
Selene sneered, "You all think it was Eugene Winslow who had Yvonne Vance as an affair and abandoned Eleanor’s mom, but how many know Eleanor’s mom wasn’t her best self either! If her heart wasn’t already elsewhere, could she leave her husband in Aethelgard for so long? Adrian, genes can’t change, Eleanor’s mother was fickle, her eyes were only on your brother before, now she’s with you, she’ll fall for someone else in the future! Listen to Mom’s advice, don’t be stubborn with this woman!"
Adrian narrowed his eyes.
His mother knew about Melody Nash too?
...
"Oh my dear, it’s been ages since you visited Grandma!" Old Madam Grant joyously took Eleanor’s hand.
"I’m here now!" Eleanor coquettishly said a few nice words.
Old Madam Grant tenderly inquired about Eleanor.
First, she asked how the internship was going, Eleanor replied she had quit and was planning to pursue a doctorate.
Old Madam Grant nodded, "Seems like it was a bad company! Good that you left!" 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Old Madam Grant then asked which school she would be attending for her doctorate, Eleanor replied Aethelgard University.
Old Madam Grant said, "Aethelgard University is really fortunate, given what happened before, our Eleanor didn’t make a fuss!"
No matter what Eleanor said, the old lady praised it.
Old Madam Grant then asked if there were any recent happy or unhappy events.
Several faces instantly popped up in Eleanor’s mind: Melody Nash, Zoe Nash, and Blake Lockwood...
"My good friend is pregnant, but she’s having some disputes with her family." Eleanor hesitated but decided to tell the matter to Old Madam Grant, "I’m on my friend’s side, helping her deal with her family."
"That young lady from the Lockwood family?" Old Madam Grant immediately guessed the person.
Eleanor nodded, apologetically saying, "Sorry, Grandma. I know my actions are a bit improper and might affect—"
"What did you do?" Old Madam Grant interrupted Eleanor.
Eleanor felt a bit uneasy, like a child who had done something wrong, "She moved out herself, and I arranged bodyguards to stop the Hawthorne family from finding her..."
Old Madam Grant asked very seriously, "Is there enough manpower? Do you need Grandma to step in and help?"
Eleanor: "..."
"Does Adrian know about this? Aren’t he helping you? Outrageous!"
Old Madam Grant was very angry, as if she were about to grab her cane and go after Adrian.
"No, no, no!" Eleanor immediately said, "The bodyguards are his people! He did help!"
"Hm?"
The man’s footsteps were drawing near, followed by a nasal sound of curiosity.
Eleanor ignored him, continuing to speak to Old Madam Grant, "I was initially worried you’d blame him, considering the matter worsens relations with the Hawthorne family."
As a qualified heir, one shouldn’t act on impulse.
Old Madam Grant glanced at Adrian, laughing as she said to Eleanor, "Eleanor, whether relations worsen is for him to think about and bear; you don’t need to worry! Moreover, our Grant family doesn’t fear sour relations; how can we allow our daughter-in-law to feel constrained for the sake of benefits? The Grant family doesn’t do such things! —How is Miss Lockwood’s health? Should Grandma send two people skilled in caring for pregnant women over?"
"No, no, no!" Eleanor immediately refused.
If the old lady sent people over, it would signify the entire Grant family opposing the Hawthorne family, causing too much fuss!
Adrian leaned against the chair, a habitual smile playing at his lips, not surprised at all by Old Madam Grant’s reaction.
The old lady was notorious for her double standards; if anyone else did such things, she’d likely say, "The young girl truly doesn’t understand, meddling in other’s affairs."
But when it involved Eleanor, she only worried if her precious granddaughter-in-law might be bullied due to being inconspicuous and lacking manpower, wishing she could personally confront others.
"Why are you staring? What are you mentally deconstructing about me?" Old Madam Grant glared at Adrian.
Adrian shrugged, indicating he wasn’t.
Old Madam Grant asked, "Did you settle everything with your mom?"
Eleanor Winslow looked at Adrian Grant in shock: "Did you, did you just go there?"
Adrian Grant hummed in response, picked up the tea cup in front of Eleanor, and took a sip.
"Hey—!" Eleanor wanted to stop him, but it was too late.
That was her teacup!
Adrian Grant tasted it; it was the 1921 Old Tong Xin tea cake favored by Old Madam Grant, with a high aroma, smooth and delicate entrance, and a flavor that turns sweet.
Adrian Grant didn’t particularly like this overly delicate tea, finding it too gentle and lacking.
"What’s wrong?" Adrian Grant asked Eleanor.
Eleanor: "...Nothing."
Old Madam Grant winked mischievously at Adrian Grant.
Her eldest grandson, such a schemer!
Eleanor glanced a few times in the direction where Selene Keane was staying. Adrian Grant pressed her shoulder and said: "You don’t need to go over there."
"Did Aunt Selene say anything to you? Did she scold you? Did she lay a hand on you?"
Adrian Grant’s heart softened as he looked down at Eleanor, "What, worried about me?"
"Yes." This time, Eleanor admitted with great frankness.
Adrian Grant paused slightly and rubbed her head, "No."
Before leaving, Old Madam Grant instructed the servants to load ten boxes of bird’s nest supplements into Adrian Grant’s car, saying they were for Blake Lockwood. Eleanor wasn’t given a chance to refuse.
Eleanor thanked Blake Lockwood on her behalf and was touched by Old Madam Grant’s attitude—she didn’t side with the Hawthorne Family out of interest, but rather chose Blake Lockwood.
Old Madam Grant pulled Adrian Grant aside, asking quietly and happily, "Reconciled?"
"Not yet," Adrian Grant replied honestly.
Old Madam Grant’s face hardened: "Useless thing!"
Adrian Grant: "..."
Old Madam Grant compromised, "Then make an effort to take care of the Lockwood girl; you can’t go wrong!"
"...Alright."
The old lady’s plans crackled loudly.
-
After getting in the car.
Eleanor asked uneasily, "Do I really not need to go see Aunt Selene?"
Adrian Grant turned the steering wheel, the car entering the main road, and said: "I brought you back just to keep Grandma company."
Adrian Grant never intended to let Eleanor meet Selene Keane from the start.
Life’s not too comfortable, wanting a scolding.
Eleanor suddenly recalled after marrying Adrian Grant, Selene Keane’s attitude towards her took a nosedive. After the first intense encounter, every time she went to see Selene Keane, Adrian Grant was by her side.
Selene Keane’s anger never fell solely on her.
He wasn’t as indifferent as she once thought.
Those details, unnoticed before, now stirred a mix of emotions in her heart as she reminisced.
Eleanor’s heart was in chaos, so much so that when Adrian Grant parked the car under her apartment building, took her hand and led her into the elevator, she was unaware, merely following in a daze.
Ding—
The elevator doors opened.
Until Eleanor saw a middle-aged woman standing at her door.
The woman was wearing a black cashmere coat, dressed exquisitely and appropriately, hands clasped together, pacing back and forth, looking somewhat nervous and anxious.
A few boxes of gifts and fruits and vegetables were placed at her door.
In the instant their eyes met, Melody Nash froze, then surprise erupted in her eyes.
"Zia!"
Melody Nash quickly walked to Eleanor, wanting to hug her, but realized Eleanor and Adrian Grant were walking side by side, so close together that she didn’t dare to reach out.
"Do you need something?" Eleanor asked.
Her expression was extremely calm, overly so. Against Melody Nash’s intense delight, she seemed somewhat indifferent.
Melody Nash noticed her attitude, feeling awkward, "Zia, Mommy came to see you. We didn’t get to talk last time—have you been well these years?"
Eleanor smiled politely, her eyes lacking warmth: "Pretty good. We don’t have much to talk about, do we?"
She was very courteous, distantly polite.
Melody Nash’s heart ached, suddenly tearing up, "Zia, are you blaming Mommy?"
"No," Eleanor spoke the truth.
How could she blame her?
All these years, she’s lived in longing and remembrance for her.
Just never expected, it would all turn out to be a joke!
"Zia..." Melody Nash didn’t know what to say for a moment and could only glance at the tall and silent Adrian Grant.
Though she didn’t like this son-in-law much, at least this man is her daughter’s current partner, and always has something to say.
Eleanor moved slightly, half her body blocking Adrian Grant.
Adrian Grant had intended to speak, but at this sight, obediently closed his mouth.
"I’m a bit tired; would you please move aside," Eleanor said.
Melody Nash was blocking her door.
Melody Nash’s face looked displeased for a moment, quickly adjusted and smiled, showing concern, "Did you go out today? If you’re tired, shall Mommy cook for you? Mommy learned a lot of dishes over these years; you’ll love them!"
Eleanor entered the house, and Melody Nash followed uninvited.
She said happily, "This house was bought for you by me back then. I’m glad you like it!"
This was bought suddenly by Melody Nash before her ’death’.
Turns out, abandonment was part of the plan.
Looking at this house again, Eleanor suddenly felt cold.
No longer wanted to live here.
Eleanor said suddenly, "I have something for you."
Melody Nash thought it was a gift, happily waiting in place.
Eleanor took out a sandalwood jewelry box, opened it—
Inside was the piece of imperial green jade that Yvonne Vance and her daughter blocked, which Adrian Grant had fought high prices to buy back.
"Returning it to its owner."
