Chapter 236: Chapter 236: Li Chang’an Heroically Saves Zhu Zhuqing

After sending the two elders away, Li Chang’an handed out the antidote to everyone. Noticing their curious stares, he spread his hands helplessly.

"Don’t get the wrong idea. This ’special envoy’ identity is just something I got through family connections."

"Cut..." Everyone looked at him with open disdain. Who would believe that? Still, since it was Li Chang’an’s private matter, they didn’t press further.

The group then made simple arrangements for positioning. With the alluring fragrance of the Immortal herb spreading through the air, the Shrek Academy party grew more cautious.

The weakest, Oscar and Ning Rongrong, stayed closest to the immortal herb, while the others formed a protective perimeter, carefully watching the surroundings.

After setting down the Immortal herb, Li Chang’an didn’t stay with them. Instead, he circled around the outer perimeter. The immortal herb was irresistible to spirit beasts of every level. To prevent weaker ones from disrupting their plan, he set up a poison formation outside.

Though his skill in poisons was nowhere near Tang San’s, he understood the basics—and with his abundant supply of materials, he had an edge. His poison array wasn’t as domineering as the ones laid by Dugu Bo, but it was enough to serve as a filter. Any spirit beast under two thousand years wouldn’t dare approach.

Spirit beasts weren’t like humans. Their senses were far sharper, especially when it came to detecting danger from poison. If they sensed toxins beyond their ability to resist, they would never risk their lives.

With this outer layer of poison formation in place, the Shrek group could conserve much of their strength.

Everything was ready. All that remained was to wait. This method of attracting strong spirit beasts came with its risks—if the spirit beast that arrived was too strong or too weak, it wouldn’t suit Zhu Zhuqing’s needs. Luck played a large role.

But with Li Chang’an here, it felt as though fortune itself tilted slightly in their favor. Even if Zhu Zhuqing wasn’t Li Chang’an himself, their connection meant some of his luck might rub off on her.

The allure of the Immortal herb proved greater than even Li Chang’an expected. Barely the time of a cup of tea had passed before their first visitor appeared.

A low roar carried the stench of blood on the wind. To the left, the trees swayed violently as if battered by a gale.

"It should be a tiger-type spirit beast. Be on guard," Li Chang’an warned, prompting the group to ready themselves.

No sooner had his words fallen than a striped tiger leapt from the forest.

Its body was jet black, save for a single white king-shaped mark on its forehead. Over three meters long and one and a half meters tall at the shoulder, it was massive yet shockingly agile.

Before the others could clearly make out its form, the tiger blurred into a string of afterimages, pouncing straight toward the immortal herb.

Generally speaking, for spirit beasts under the ten-thousand-year level, the stronger they were, the larger their size. Beyond ten thousand years, however, the reverse was true—the stronger they grew, the more compact their forms became. Of course, there were always exceptions. But a glance at this tiger was enough to tell—it was at least a ten-thousand-year spirit beast.

"This one suits Zhu Zhuqing. Take it down! The seven of you working together should handle a ten-thousand-year beast, but mind your coordination."

Li Chang’an gave the order, his spiritual power already spreading outward. He was ready to intervene if necessary.

The black tiger was a Phantom Tiger—famed for its terrifying speed and ferocity. Few spirit beasts dared challenge it, even those of similar cultivation.

As Tang San cast his Spider Web Restraint, the Phantom Tiger’s body shimmered strangely. What was once one tiger split into three.

One was caught in the web and vanished into mist—an illusion. The other two lunged forward even faster.

Phantom Tiger’s innate ability—Shadow Clone.

Dai Mubai roared, his four soul rings flashing as his body swelled. White Tiger possession completed, he charged head-on.

Twin tiger palms thrust forward as a blast of white light surged from his mouth—White Tiger Light Wave!

The explosion of energy dispersed another clone.

But when Ma Hongjun and Xiao Wu moved in to strike, the Phantom Tiger’s body flickered again, producing two more shadowy doubles. Three forms rushed simultaneously toward the immortal herb.

"Left side is the real one—Zhuqing, watch out!" Tang San shouted, his eyes glowing with purple-gold light.

With his Purple Demon Eye, he could distinguish energy fluctuations clearly. The true Phantom Tiger had nowhere to hide from his gaze.

Unfortunately, Zhu Zhuqing was the only one in its path—Oscar and Ning Rongrong stood directly behind her. The beast had chosen its target wisely.

The teachers—Flender, Liu Erlong, Zhao Wuji—were already prepared to intervene if the students faltered.

Even Li Chang’an glanced at Tang San with some surprise. As expected of the child of destiny—his Purple Demon Eye was indeed extraordinary.

Zhu Zhuqing knew there was no room to retreat. Instead, she advanced, charging directly at the Phantom Tiger. At the same time, three streams of warmth surged into her body from behind—strength, speed, and soul power boosts. With Ning Rongrong and Oscar’s support, her state instantly surpassed its peak.

Li Chang’an’s eyes flashed coldly. Mental Shock!

The Phantom Tiger’s body stiffened mid-charge, its speed faltering. The power of his spirit, guided by Gu Yuena’s methods, made even this ten-thousand-year beast reel from a casual strike.

"Don’t stop. I’ll shield you—kill it!" Li Chang’an’s steady voice rang in Zhu Zhuqing’s ear. Her heart surged with confidence.

Her third soul ring flared with purple light. Both hands crossed overhead, claw blades merging into a single razor-sharp weapon over a foot long.

Black light surged from her body as she and her weapon became one. With unstoppable momentum, she slashed downward—

Nether Shadow Slash!

The air itself split apart, rippling like water. A jet-black blade cut cleanly through one of the Phantom Tiger’s illusions, dissipating it.

Bolstered by the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Pagoda, this was Zhu Zhuqing’s strongest strike yet.

But the Phantom Tiger was still a ten-thousand-year spirit beast. Its true body lunged immediately after the clone was destroyed, crashing toward her with overwhelming force.

Having poured all her strength into the slash, Zhu Zhuqing was momentarily vulnerable.

Danger!

Everyone’s hearts tightened. Flender and Liu Erlong leapt forward, but they were a step too slow.

At that instant, Li Chang’an moved. He had wanted Zhu Zhuqing to temper herself—but now, he had to be her shield.

With a powerful stomp, his body shot forward like a cannonball. In a blink, he was before Zhu Zhuqing, pulling her into his arms.

For the first time, Zhu Zhuqing relaxed completely. In his embrace, she knew she was safe.

But Li Chang’an didn’t stop there. By holding her, he had chosen to bear the full force of the Phantom Tiger’s assault himself.

The beast’s claws slammed down. Li Chang’an raised his hand, two fingers joined, and blocked the strike head-on.

"Roar!" The Phantom Tiger’s body surged with black light, its claws pressing harder, its shadow blades slashing toward him. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

"Scram!"

Li Chang’an’s fingers pierced straight through its paw, making the Phantom Tiger howl in agony.

Kneeling slightly with Zhu Zhuqing still in his arms, he channeled power into his leg. Strength from his soul bone erupted, tripling his force.

"Roar—!"

The thousand kg tiger was lifted as if weightless. With a single knee strike, Li Chang’an sent it flying.

The beast crashed through dozens of towering trees before finally skidding to a stop, groaning in pain.
