Divine Magus: Awakening-Chapter 44: Leaving The Academy
Chapter 44: Leaving The Academy
Leaving the training hall, Logan quickly headed to the dormitories to find Orion.
Upon entering and going to his room, however, he discovered it was empty.
’Hmm. Where is he?’ Logan pondered where on the academy grounds he could be.
Getting an idea, Logan left the dorms and headed outside.
He moved towards the forest line and could see the person he had been looking for.
Sitting in a lotus position, Orion was mumbling a spell.
On closer inspection, a small ball of what appeared to be metal was floating in the air.
The small ball strangely had liquid properties as it rippled in the air.
Logan decided to observe what was going on.
With a wave of his hand, the sphere turned into a long and narrow needle.
Then a small necklace and then a thin blade. Orion masterfully controlled it to make various items that had a large range of uses.
"I can feel you there bro. Why are you just watching me? That’s weird." Orion remarked as he turned his head to look at Logan with a slight smile on his face.
Furrowing his eyebrows, Logan was about to ask how he knew he was there when Orion beat him to the punch.
"I layered this area with small pieces of metal. Far too small to be noticed easily and far too numerous to be considered intentional." Orion turned fully to Logan.
"And so when you stepped on one, I knew someone was approaching." He concluded.
"Okay? Then how’d you know that it was me?" Logan raised his eyebrow, while he inherently liked to keep to himself, Orion had sort of grown on him.
Perhaps it was their shared hunger for revenge that made them connect.
"Oh, that? Well if it was the Death Magus, the Life Magus, or even a teacher, they would have noticed the mana in the metal to avoid it and since we’re the only students in school, I deduced that it was you." Orion concluded showing off impressive analytical prowess.
"Mana in metal?" Logan asked again.
He wasn’t normally this curious to intrude into someone’s personal affairs but perhaps it was because of the mystery that surrounded the metal element that he was this driven.
It could also account to him lacking his mana core and trying to learn more about other kinds of magic as a coping mechanism.
Shaking the thought out of his head, Logan prepared to listen in on what Orion was about to say to him.
"Metal magic like Miss Beth said can be likened to a very sensitive and intense affinity for Earth magic." Orion started to which Logan nodded.
"Well, what she meant by that is that the magic of a metal magic user is so focused and precise when using Earth magic that it ends up being to our detriment." Orion let out a sigh.
"If I as someone with metal magic attempted to control earth, my magic would lift every grain of the earth individually. This would drain my mana like a vice." Orion continued.
"And so, we use metal magic by controlling the little fine pieces of earth within." He concluded.
Tilting his head slightly, Logan had a slightly amused expression.
"You haven’t answered my question." He spoke slowly to Orion who groaned as a response.
"I pour my mana into metal when I’m not busy to increase my control over it." He summarized in sixteen words.
Letting out a sigh, Logan sat beside Orion.
"So what now? Are you leaving the academy? As you know, you have no manner core?" Orio asked whispering the last part.
"No. No, I’m not. Let’s just say that I found a way to stay here without necessarily being able to cast spells." Logan smiled slightly.
"Man, you have really opened up. I remember the first time we met and I was being all nice. You, on the other hand, were like ’this world shall know hurt. Almighty Shove!’." Orion laughed out his lungs.
"But it’s a good thing, it means that you are healing and recovering from the horrible ordeal you went through." He patted Logan’s shoulder affirmatively.
"Once I kill the bastard responsible for my family’s death and the loss of your mana core, then can I begin to find peace." Orion’s eyes darkened.
Logan closed his eyes as a million thoughts ran their course in his mind.
"Where exactly is the metal that can detect the grey energy?" He looked at Orion.
Orion looked Logan in the eye, a semblance of admiration sparkling in his eyes.
"It’s on an island and a treacherous one at that. I’m not sure of the chances of our survival there at our current rank, not to mention your... condition." Orion failed at smoothing things over.
"No matter about that. Do you know how to get there?" Logan raised his eyebrow.
"Yes, I do but we can’t go there." Orion shook his head vehemently.
"And why might that be?" Logan fixed his eyes on him.
"Because we will die." Orion rejected firmly.
"But didn’t I almost die just being in the academy? It doesn’t matter where you are, you can die anywhere and at any time." Logan argued.
"Fine. It’s on Duskfang Isle." Orion sighed. freeωebnovēl.c૦m
"But I still strongly oppose the notion of us going there now cause if we die, I don’t want you disturbing me in the afterlife." Orion crossed his arms.
In response, Logan left Orion and entered the school.
About twenty minutes later and much to the surprise of Orion, Logan stood in front of him wearing a black windbreaker.
He had a tachi strapped on his waist.
"I think you have spent far too much time with the Death Magus." Orion looked away from Logan.
"These are the clothes the kingdom gave me for enduring something else that had occurred." Logan let out a bit of information.
"I just collected it now. Never had a real reason to do so except for now." He walked up to Orion.
"I told you that I’ll help you find the metal. I’m not at my peak considering my loss of a mana core so I’ll need those that I can trust to an extent." He extended his hand.
"And so I’ll do this for you since that was part of our deal." Orion stared at the extended hand and took it.
Logan pulled him to his feet.
Letting out a sigh, Orion dropped his shoulders.
"Fine, let’s leave for the island." He reluctantly agreed.
Logan accompanied by Orion marched to the headmaster’s office.
Knocking on the door, they waited until they were told to come in.
Without bothering himself with pleasantries, Logan went straight to the point.
"We want to leave the school now," Logan spoke first to Victor who was staring at them impassively.
"And why is that?" He raised an eyebrow and to this Logan’s faint smile vanished.
"I believe- no, I know that the academy is on its annual two-month break. Other students have left so why can’t we?" Logan asked with a slightly hostile tone:
"No, you can leave. I was just curious as to what brought it up." Victor waved a dismissive hand at them and they responded by leaving.
Looking at the closed door, Victor let out a sigh.
"I told the royal family to at least compensate him for the ordeal he went through yet not only did they turn a deaf ear to me, they proceeded to negate his earnings from the royal duel." Victor lamented to himself.
"I hope they know what they’re doing cause if that kid was to go rogue, something tells me that we’ll all regret it." He went back to his duties.
Outside the office, Orion was staring at Logan with wide eyes.
"Did you just threaten the headmaster?!" He screamed into Logan’s ears.
"Don’t shout!" Logan snapped back at him.
Inhaling deeply, Orion opened his mouth. "Did you just threaten the headmaster?!" He shouted again, this time in a whispering tone.
Logan started walking off, "No I didn’t threaten him. He asked a question to which I answered. No harm, no foul." Logan continued moving in calm strides.
"Irrespective of the nature of the question, the reply you gave seemed hostile. I’m not sure what’s up with you. One moment you seem hotheaded and out for revenge, the next you’re calm and calculating." Logan stopped walking to look at Orion.
"Or the next, you seem silly and easy going. I’m a bit worried about you and so would most people." Orion sighed before taking a few steps ahead of Logan.
"Let’s meet amidst the academy’s buildings in thirty minutes." Orion walked off with quite a hurried pace.
*********
In a small town quite far from the Kingdom’s central and the control attached to it, there was a great calamity.
Dozens of corpses littered the streets all dry and bony.
Among the chaos and destruction that spread, a little girl no older than four was crying.
She was hugging her knees with her head between her legs.
"Hey there. What’s going on? Why are you crying?" A caring feminine voice asked beside her.
The little girl raised her head to lock eyes with the woman.
The woman had black hair with vermilion streaks, and her eyes appeared to have a crimson tone.
"My mommy! I can’t f-find her!" The girl burst into even more tears.
"Oh, baby girl." The woman knelt beside the girl and hugged her.
"We’ll find your mommy okay?" She cooed into the girl’s ear as she placed her hand on the girl’s head.
"Lera!!!" A female’s voice screamed from across the road.
"Mom?!" The girl’s eyes gained new light and hope.
The woman’s hand moved in an instant and snapped the girl’s neck before ripping it off.
The woman across the street screamed at the loss of her daughter.
While the woman with the red eyes was still holding the corpse cackled and then all the blood that gushed out of her neck moved.
