Chapter 46: First Clear – The Fall of Goldtooth

Wham!

A glowing shield ricocheted off Goldtooth’s chest, dealing 320 points of Holy damage. The force sent it careening into Snarlfang next, slamming into the beast for another 170 damage.

Avenger’s Shield: Hurls a holy shield at the target, dealing Holy damage, interrupting spellcasting, and silencing them for 3 seconds. Bounces to up to three enemies. Costs mana, grants 1 Divine Power. 30-second cooldown.

Ryan had just used Avenger’s Shield, a powerful ability unlocked when he specialized in the Protection path. Not only did it inflict solid Holy damage to both bosses, but more importantly, it interrupted Goldtooth’s spellcasting and firmly secured their aggro. That was key.

Snarlfang, the brawler of the duo, was relatively straightforward. As the simplest of all secondary bosses, he had only a few predictable abilities—none of them truly dangerous. Mortal Strike was the only one worth watching, cutting down healing received by its target.

Other skills like Cleave, which struck everything in a frontal arc, or Thunderclap, which slowed the attack speed of nearby players, were largely harmless. Even Charge, which was supposed to be threatening with its bonus damage, barely tickled. After charging in, Snarlfang hit Ryan for just over 200 damage. Once reduced to basic attacks and Cleave, his hits dropped to under 130—practically ignorable.

Goldtooth was the real threat.

A priest-type monster, Goldtooth looked more like a shaman out of the Dark Horde playbook. While he could swing a staff if needed, his melee hits were weak—only about 80 damage per strike, even less than some regular elites.

But that wasn’t the problem.

Goldtooth was dangerous because of his totems.

Barkskin Totem: Reduces physical damage taken by enemies by 50%. Refreshes every 2 seconds. Lasts 5 seconds. Totem persists for 2 minutes.

Searing Totem: Casts Searing Fireball at a player, dealing 88–120 Fire damage. 2-second cast. Totem lasts 1 minute.

Tidal Totem: Triggers high Frost damage and immobilizes players in range for 10 seconds. Totem lasts 15 seconds.

Healing Totem: Restores 50% HP to all nearby creatures every 10 seconds. Totem lasts 1 minute.

Any of these could be trouble. Left unchecked, they’d slowly wear the group down—or worse. But it was the Healing Totem that posed the biggest threat. If it stayed up too long, their healer’s mana would be drained trying to keep up, and the entire team would collapse before the bosses did.

Worse, Goldtooth could also cast Poison Cloud, a wide-area damage-over-time spell, and heal himself when needed. Outside of those abilities, he was about on par with a regular elite mob. But that didn’t make him safe.

Ryan had fought this boss before. Many times, in fact. He knew the timing, the priorities, the mechanics—almost to muscle memory. But this time, he couldn’t let on that he’d been here before. So, when the group gathered before the pull, he kept things vague.

"The boss is Priest-class," he said. "Should play a bit like a Shaman from the Dark Horde. Expect totem spells and elemental attacks."

He glanced over at Evelyn, his tone calm but direct. "I’ll try to interrupt his elemental spells whenever I can. If a totem appears, destroy it immediately. If it’s a healing totem, that takes top priority. Evelyn, I’m counting on you to handle that."

Fortunately, Ryan had explained the strategy before the fight began. Just as the silence from Avenger’s Shield wore off, Goldtooth planted his first totem—the Barkskin Totem.

"Evelyn, destroy it!" Ryan shouted.

Without missing a beat, he followed up with Fist of Light, sending a burst of Holy energy crashing into the totem. With only 200 HP, it shattered instantly under their combined assault.

"Excellent. Keep it up," Ryan said coolly, still holding the aggro of both bosses. "Evelyn, stay on totem duty. Everyone else—burn down the boss."

He glanced at the party. "Focus the warrior first—kill the one with less health."

With aggro under control, Ryan called for Evelyn to mark Snarlfang with Hunter’s Mark, signaling the others to unleash their abilities.

She had managed her energy wisely, as Ryan advised, and was ready to cast. Goldtooth typically summoned a new totem every ten seconds, giving her small windows to deal damage between taking them out. Her output wasn’t high, but it was consistent.

Snarlfang’s total HP was just over 6,000. Under concentrated fire from the entire team, he went down quickly. Goldtooth managed to sneak in one healing spell mid-fight, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide. For the most part, Snarlfang had been a punching bag.

Ryan barely felt the damage. His defenses—parry, dodge, passive mitigation—kept his damage intake down to around 80 per second. With over 800 HP, he could hold out for more than ten seconds even without healing.

And if things ever got dicey, he had an ace up his sleeve: Divine Command, a skill he learned at Level 10. By consuming 3 Divine Power, he could restore roughly 600 HP instantly. It had a 20-second cooldown, but with careful use and further mitigation, he could lower his damage intake to just 50 per second.

Even better, Heavyblade Vina had recently specialized as a Holy Paladin. Her healing power had skyrocketed, and the cooldown on Divine Command was removed entirely. As long as she had Divine Power, she could cast it freely—no mana cost, no cooldown. That meant her mana bar stayed nearly full, even after Snarlfang went down.

With the warrior-type boss gone, Goldtooth was no longer a serious threat. His only offense came from elemental spells and the occasional totem. As long as the totems were destroyed immediately, the fight became a simple grind.

Goldtooth had phase changes, but they weren’t complicated. At 60% health, he dropped two totems at once. At 30%, he summoned three. Ryan calmly adjusted the strategy—he simply called for full focus on the totems whenever they appeared. The rest of the time, the group chipped away at his HP.

And slowly, it worked.

Bit by bit, Goldtooth’s health dropped. The final phase was frantic—totems flaring, fireballs flying—but everyone held their ground. Evelyn destroyed the last wave of totems with a calm precision that made Ryan silently nod in approval.

Then came the moment.

With one last shout from Ryan, the final sliver of Goldtooth’s health was burned away. The boss let out a guttural roar as his form crumpled to the floor.

They’d done it.

The room fell quiet for a heartbeat—and then erupted.

Cheers burst out from Evelyn and the others. They had just cleared the dungeon. Not just any clear—the first clear in the entire game.

They were the world’s first.
