Chapter 53: 53rd Chapter: Water Virtue Star Lord! The Black Coffin Entwined with Chains!_1

Since the sun had just set not long ago, the sky wasn’t particularly dark. Moreover, with no clouds in the night sky and under the light of the moon...

visibility was still quite far.

In a rather secluded household in Bai He County, the doors of the dwelling had already been firmly shut.

On the doors were two faded images of door gods.

It was unclear how many years those images had been there.

Next to the door gods was a freshly pasted talisman, with a yellow background and red characters, faintly emanating a subtle power.

Inside the house were only two people, a man and a woman.

One was the wife.

The other was the husband.

Both spouses weren’t old, in their twenties, but they had worked hard in the fields for years, enduring sun and rain without falter.

So although in their twenties, they appeared as if they were in their thirties or forties.

Their faces were lined with wrinkles, their skin coarse.

Displaying a darkened hue.

"Husband, is our child really all right now?" the wife asked, her tone thick with worry and a hint of a sob, "He’s been sick for several days now, and even the old village chief, who’s practiced medicine for decades, couldn’t do anything about that strange illness..."

"He should be better now, mostly cured..." the husband whispered to comfort her, "A high-level man came to our village, a Taoist Priest! He gave our child a bowl of water to drink, and our child started to steam all over!"

"The old village chief said that their condition...that it’s turned for the better. That sort of...that kind of poison, it’s been resolved."

At this point, he seemed to remember something.

He spoke even more quietly, "Tonight, we mustn’t speak loudly. It might...might attract ’unclean things’ at night!"

"That person from the Imperial Court’s office came again, they said tonight would be very dangerous!"

The wife, having heard this, became even more anxious, "Then...who will take care of the children?"

"Don’t worry...hmm? Shh!!"

Just as the husband was about to say more, he suddenly heard some strange noises.

He quickly gestured to his wife to be silent.

A sense of tension and fear crept into their hearts.

And that indescribable chill was making them shiver uncontrollably!

They swallowed their saliva in darkness.

Cold sweat broke out.

The couple stayed silent for a good while, noticing no further noises, they finally relaxed.

The husband used his rough, calloused palm to wipe the cold sweat from his forehead.

He muttered in relief, "Maybe it’s the big fish in the Great Water Pond behind the house... it could also be some wild cat, wild dog, or field mice, hares, something of that sort."

The place they lived was on the outskirts of Nie Family Village, which was quite remote.

There weren’t many neighboring houses around theirs.

For this reason,

they were more nervous than others.

And more frightened.

Behind the dwelling of this couple from Nie Family Village was a patch of disordered forest and a stream that ran through the woods and pooled into a pond in a depression.

The pond was large, almost sizeable enough to be called a lake, spanning across both Nie Family Village and Li Family Village.

"In any case, we’d better not sleep tonight and keep the candles burning until daybreak..."

Before the husband could finish his sentence, the strange noises outside resumed!

This time, he heard it more clearly.

It was as if there were the sounds of water splashing.

Feeling a chill run down his spine, he took a deep breath and, mustering courage, tiptoed to a window. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

This window looked directly onto the Great Water Pond behind the hills of Nie Family Village and Li Family Village.

The pond was just about a hundred steps from their house.

He didn’t have the nerve to open the window, which was already a bit broken, with one small gap not patched up.

He peered out with one eye through that tiny crack.

Looking outside.

Looking out towards the nearby Great Water Pond.

And with just one look...

He froze!

Then, instantly!

A chill that made one’s hair stand on end shot up from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head, making all his hair involuntarily bristle. His forehead, barely dry from before, was damp with sweat once more.

He was so terrified that his lips quivered, and a subconscious voice told him not to open his mouth, not to speak, not to make a sound.

But that instinct...

He could not control it.

"...ghost!"

"There’s..."

"There’s a ghost!"

With a display of sheer willpower, he managed to suppress his cries of fear to a forced, low decibel.

...

Time reversed.

At the Great Water Pond.

Massive quantities of white bubbles surged from the bottom of the pond to the surface, as if a gigantic creature was stirring beneath, blanketing the entire pond’s surface with a wafer-thin mist of white.

To the average person, it appeared simply as a fog, but to those practiced in the ways of Dao, this vapor was clearly an emanation of Yin Energy!

A vast expanse of Yin Energy spread over the pond, unsettling the fish and shrimp within, leaving them anxious and restless.

The fish and shrimp leaped out of the water, as if desperately struggling to escape from this place.

Gusts of strange wind blew incessantly during the night, creating ripples across the water like scales shimmering on a fish.

Nearby the pond stood a miniature temple, roughly half a person’s height, housing just one dilapidated deity statue that could barely be made out as the Water Virtue Star Lord.

From its state of disrepair, it was clear that no one had worshipped at this tiny temple for many years.

Nor had anyone maintained it.

Surprisingly, the temple seemed immune to the bizarre gusts of wind outside; not even a single withered leaf atop the temple was blown away.

Quite peculiar.

At that moment, the wind carried towards it a very strange object that resembled a soggy lump of rotten flesh.

It landed on the roof of the temple.

Right on top of that fallen leaf.

The rotten flesh began to transform oddly, visibly multiplying and growing at a rapid pace!

The lump of flesh grew larger and larger, until it was about the size of a human head, making it seem like a large meat tumor!

The fleshy tumor squirmed like a fat worm, its rotting surface slowly coagulating to finally form a grotesque visage!

The eyes of this bizarre face were closed, its expression one of serene indifference, akin to the Buddhas within the temple.

In the center of its forehead was a Buddhist swastika, and just below its chin, a Yin Yang Fish Diagram from the Daoist Sect.

It gave off the eerie sensation of a sewn-together monstrosity.

Suddenly!

It opened its previously closed eyes!

Exposing eyeballs that appeared alive!

The lump instantaneously sprouted numerous sharp spikes, thrusting violently towards the miniature temple!

The already crumbling temple stood no chance against such an assault, and in the blink of an eye, it was pierced repeatedly, turning it into a giant porcupine.

Inside the temple, a statue of the Water Virtue Star Lord, less than a foot tall, trembled ever so slightly.

The spikes shattered inch by inch.

The ghastly mouth on the lump of flesh spoke as if spewing human words, "I am The Great Revered One, he who saves from suffering and difficulty, compassionate and merciful."

As these words fell, the mass of flesh began to grow even larger, and the bizarre winds grew fiercer.

"I am the supreme divine being who protects the livelihood of all people and guards the homeland and the state."

With another sentence, the flesh lump was almost as big as the temple itself.

This small temple seemed to be enduring the pressure of an immense force.

Issuing a cry as if it were almost too much to bear.

"I am the great ruler of Yin and Yang, the master of the Five Elements and the Six Paths of Reincarnation."

With these words!

The mass of flesh was now attempting to envelop the temple!

Speaking with an echoing voice, each statement caused a drop of several degrees in the surrounding temperature.

The furious wind howled relentlessly.

Breaking many trees.

"I wish to awaken my Commander, ’The Brave and Virtuous Sword-Bearing General.’"

"Water Virtue Star Lord!"

"Make haste and depart!"

Crack!

A deep expression of anger appeared on the fragmented face of the statue within the small temple, but it was far too damaged. The statue of the Water Virtue Star Lord trembled a few times before it abruptly shattered!

Along with the smashing of the Water Virtue Star Lord statue, the entire temple was completely engulfed by the fleshy mass, swallowed whole!

The next instant!

The Great Water Pond became even more tumultuous, with streaks of black material slowly drifting in the water.

The fish that touched the black substance quickly sprouted numerous sores, their swimming becoming more rigid, and lifelessness evident in their eyes.

Faint shadows in the pond began to emerge more distinctly visible.

A black coffin entwined in dark chains...

Slowly rose from the waters!

Evil Qi surged mightily!!
