Chapter 99: 99. Xiuniang is very good

They usually can’t eat much, and when they’re very hungry, they rely on drinking water to feel full. But every time their aunt visits, they occasionally get to taste some of the good stuff she brings.

That’s why Qi Daya and the others really hope the aunts visit often.

Seeing her sons and grandsons getting anxious, Old Lady Qi immediately glared at her three daughters-in-law, "What are you still sitting for? Hurry to the door and take a look!"

Seeing their mother-in-law’s cold face, the three daughters-in-law dared not sit any longer. They quickly got up, opened the door, and rushed out.

Old Lady Qi was still worried, shivering from the cold as she stepped out, but she still followed closely behind them.

"Mom... do you want to freeze us to death? Hurry and close the door." Qi San, sitting near the door, felt a gust of cold wind blow in. Shivering, he grumpily yelled.

"Alright, alright," Old Lady Qi, taking a few steps forward without getting angry, turned back cheerfully, closed the door, and before that, glared at the granddaughters inside, scolding them for not being perceptive.

Frightened, several children shrank back inside.

"Mom..."

Outside, Qi’s hands were turning red from knocking. Seeing no response, she shouted loudly.

In the courtyard, the three sisters-in-law exchanged a glance of joy upon hearing the voice and hurriedly quickened their pace.

It was the eldest sister-in-law, and although she was the fiercest and the most dismissive of them among the three sisters, it couldn’t be denied that she was married to the best and richest husband. She always brought a lot of things when she visited.

Old Lady Qi, closing the door, also recognized the eldest daughter’s voice. Her face lit up with joy, despite her age, she rushed ahead of her three daughters-in-law and reached the main gate quickly.

"Is that you, Xiu?" Old Lady Qi hurriedly asked.

"It’s me, hurry and open the door, it’s freezing outside." Qi replied, her tone worlds apart from when she met Grandma Sun earlier. She sounded much more impatient, with a hint of arrogance.

"Opening, opening," Despite being displeased with the eldest daughter’s tone, the thought of the things she brought immediately improved Old Lady Qi’s mood.

"Oh Xiu, you’re finally here. I missed you so much." As she opened the door, Old Lady Qi rushed to hug Qi, but Qi blocked her with an arm.

"Mom, how long has it been since you washed these clothes? They’re so filthy." Qi looked her mother up and down, wrinkling her nose in disdain.

"Wash what in this cold weather? Oh, the son-in-law is here too." Old Lady Qi smirked at her daughter’s cleanliness habit, turned to see Hua Chengtian, and her smile widened.

"Mom," Hua Chengtian greeted.

"Ah, ah..." Old Lady Qi nodded, then called towards the main house in the courtyard, "Old man, come out quickly, our eldest son-in-law is here."

"Grandma, I’m here too, and so is my sister." Xiao Si stepped forward, holding his head high to emphasize his small presence.

"Grandma," Hua Jin followed up with a call.

Old Lady Qi, still somewhat courteous, nodded, merely glancing at them and frowning at Hua Jin’s obviously new clothes.

She thought her daughter was foolish too. What’s special about a girl? Spoiling her as if she’s something else. She’ll belong to someone else in the future, and all the effort will be in vain, but being good to nephews is different. Nephews can be relied on in the future.

Unfortunately, her eldest daughter was stubborn, no matter what was said, it didn’t change her mind, and it often made her secretly upset.

Old Lady Qi rolled her eyes secretly at her eldest daughter, glancing at Xiao Si, and couldn’t help but feel jealous. Look at how plump this child is, and her poor grandsons are all so skinny. The more she thought about it, the angrier she got. How did she raise such a heartless, ungrateful person? But she couldn’t treat her like her other two daughters, or else they might not even visit in the future.

Even though she was fuming inside, Old Lady Qi had to endure. She flashed a fake smile at Xiao Si, exclaiming, "Oh, our Xiao Si is here too. Let Grandma take a look, see how strong you’ve grown," she said, squatting down to hug Xiao Si.

Xiao Si initially intended to let Grandma hold him for a moment, but seeing her cold attitude towards his sister, he instinctively stepped back.

He shouted, "Grandma, what’s that smell on you? It’s awful."

Hua Jin subtly gave her brother a thumbs-up glance, not caring about Old Lady Qi’s cold attitude.

"What smell?" Old Lady Qi’s smile froze, cursing in her mind, but honestly sniffed her arm, "There’s no smell, maybe it’s the smell of cooking smoke. You and your mom both love cleanliness. In the future, Grandma will find you a clean wife." Old Lady Qi forced another fake smile.

"I don’t want one. I’m still young," Xiao Si shivered thinking of something, quickly shaking his head.

On hearing her mom’s nonsense again, Qi immediately grew unhappy.

"Mom, what nonsense are you talking about? Xiao Si is still young. Besides, Xiao Si’s marriage isn’t up to you, my in-laws will handle it."

This said with no intention to save Old Lady Qi’s face.

Glancing at Hua Chengtian after being scolded by her daughter, Old Lady Qi forcefully swallowed her anger, forming a stiff smile. "Why are you mad? Wasn’t I just joking?"

"The kid’s still young, it’s better if Mom doesn’t casually say such things." Qi, never indulging Old Lady Qi, continued to argue.

"Look at you, look at that temper, son-in-law, my daughter must have given you lots of trouble, right?" Old Lady Qi awkwardly smiled at Hua Chengtian. If only Hua Chengtian said one bad thing, it’d give her a reason to scold her daughter.

"Xiu is very good," Hua Chengtian glanced satisfyingly at Qi, smiling gently.

Although the three sisters-in-law were rolling their eyes in their hearts, they couldn’t help feeling a little envious deep inside.

Meanwhile, indoors, Old Man Qi, hearing his wife’s voice, heard that the eldest son-in-law had arrived, his face lit up, and he quickly got up to head outside.

With the eldest son-in-law’s visit, can there be any lack of food?

Walking and shouting, "The eldest son-in-law is here, why didn’t you send word in advance? We could have opened the door earlier."

"Yes, yes, Mom, why are you still blocking the door? Hurry and let Brother-in-law in, it’s terribly cold." The eldest, second, and third brothers-in-law hurried behind their father, each with a smile, their eyes darting towards the ox cart outside. Unfortunately, the door was half closed, so they couldn’t see anything.

At this moment, Old Man Qi also saw that no one had entered the courtyard yet, and glaring at his wife, "How come you haven’t let the son-in-law and daughter in yet? It’s freezing! Come in quickly, don’t let my precious grandchild catch a cold."

He said as he quickened his pace to move the threshold at the entrance.

He tried to move it but couldn’t; he tried again and still couldn’t.

Looking at the frozen, compacted snow on both sides of the threshold, Old Man Qi’s face turned red.

Seeing his father-in-law struggle twice without moving the threshold, Hua Chengtian couldn’t just stand by and hurried over to help.

"No, no, you don’t need to," Old Man Qi wanted to maintain some dignity; there was no way he was going to let the son-in-law do this kind of work. He glared at his three unseeing sons, "Eldest, why are you standing there? Hurry and get some tools to remove the snow."

"Yes, yes," the eldest readily complied this time, not dawdling.
