Chapter 100: 100. Annoyed

Unable to resist, she glanced towards the ox cart before Qi Dabao’s eldest uncle ran quickly to the woodshed, grabbing a hoe and started chopping at the rock-hard snow by the doorstep.

No need to mention it, even with a solid whack, he only managed to clear a small portion, leaving Qi Dabao’s uncle to awkwardly laugh a few times then continue.

It was a sight that Hua Chengtian was used to. After all, it happened every winter.

To Hua Jin, however, her family-in-law opened a whole new world for her.

Never had she seen people so lazy. The thick snow outside could be forgiven, but she never expected the courtyard to hold an even thicker, exaggerated layer.

Hua Jin cast a glance at the roofs of the various rooms in the courtyard; fortunately, they valued their lives enough to have dealt with the snow on top, but those heaps weren’t moved out.

Looking at the family’s clothes, except for the three women in the courtyard who were presumably her aunts, Hua Jin found everyone’s clothes unpresentable, not one clean garment.

The courtyard was a mess; with so many lazy people in the house, Hua Jin couldn’t help but be impressed.

After clearing the threshold inside, they hurried on to clear the outside, and finally, after a moment, the ox cart was pulled into the yard.

The Qi brothers all had a greedy glint in their eyes upon seeing the big yellow ox in the courtyard, but alas, it was just wishful thinking; this brother-in-law valued the ox more than his own life, and he wouldn’t lend it even for a moment.

Their suspicion was heavily clouded, as if lending it would mean it couldn’t be returned. The brothers secretly smirked to themselves.

If the big yellow ox was off limits, they thought they might try their luck with what was in the cart.

The entire family, including the children, stared at the ox cart with shiny eyes.

"Auntie, what tasty treats did you bring for Dabao?"

As the eldest grandson of the Qi family, Qi Dabao was always arrogant and spoiled rotten. Seeing his aunt, he couldn’t help himself before the goodies were removed from the cart, pulling at Qi’s hand.

Not waiting for his aunt to answer, his body moved faster than his mind, directly climbing onto the ox cart, but was blocked by Xiaosi.

Though still young, Xiaosi was a few years younger than Qi Dabao but sturdily built, and while not quite as strong as his sister, he was much stronger than an average child. Plus, with better meals in the recent months, the little guy grew quite quickly, looking not much shorter than Qi Dabao at first glance. He steadfastly blocked Qi Dabao from climbing onto their ox cart. Although the things were gifts for their grandparents, it wasn’t proper for Qi Dabao to take them.

"Get out of the way." Seeing himself blocked by his least favorite cousin, Dabao was immediately displeased, glaring angrily at Xiaosi, looking ready to fight at a moment’s notice.

"Get out of the way, or I’ll beat you up." He waved his fists at Xiaosi, completely forgetting that Xiaosi was not his usual spoiling family.

Xiaosi might be at the bottom rank in the family, but in the village, he was undefeated amongst kids around Hua Village of similar age; there was no one he feared.

Was Xiaosi afraid of threats? Hardly.

Instantly, he puffed up his little chest, glancing mockingly at the slightly taller Qi Dabao. "Qi Dabao, who do you think you want to beat up? Trying for delicacies, are you? Do you believe I won’t let Mom take out the stuff from the cart?"

Xiaosi had always been no pushover when facing down arrogance.

"Hua Xiaosi, you really deserve a beating." Provoked like that, there was no way Qi Dabao could hold back, and more importantly, he audaciously threatened to have Auntie not take the treats out, further stoking his anger. He charged forward, fists raised to hit Xiaosi.

The conflict between the two kids erupted very swiftly, and in just the blink of an eye, by the time the adults noticed, Dabao was already swinging at Xiaosi.

At that moment, Qi was engaging in small talk with her sisters-in-law, while Hua Chengtian was busy tying the big yellow ox to a tree in the yard, preparing to shovel away the snow to make a resting spot for it. Who could have expected that in such a short moment, the two children would get into a fight, leaving no time to intervene?

Old Woman Qi, nearby, was displeased by Xiaosi’s arrogant words and felt her grandson was older than Xiaosi, surely not to lose, making her unwilling to stop them. It was just as well for her grandson to teach that nephew a lesson, saving him from being spoiled rotten.

Unfortunately, Old Woman Qi’s idea was destined to fail because how could Hua Jin allow anyone to strike her brother right under her nose?

Look down on who?

Just as Qi Dabao’s clenched fist was nearing Xiaosi, suddenly a pair of small feet appeared and, with little effort, sent Qi Dabao flying lightly into a thick snowdrift several meters away.

The process happened so quickly that the yard fell silent for a moment, stunned.

Followed by an "Ah!" as Old Woman Qi’s pained voice echoed, she rushed to the side of Qi Dabao, who lay dazed in the snow.

"Oh my poor Dabao, tell Nai where you’ve hurt yourself, where does it ache? It pains Nai to death." Old Woman Qi hastily picked up Qi Dabao, her eyes full of resentment aimed at Hua Jin who was retracting her legs.

Next to her, Dabao’s mother was just as quick, but didn’t dare compete with her mother-in-law to hold her son. Seeing her unresponsive child, she too shot a displeased look at Hua Jin.

"Waa waa..." After the initial shock and with his chest throbbing faintly, the recovering Qi Dabao glared fiercely at Hua Jin and bawled. Held by Old Woman Qi, he might have simply kicked out, rolled, and cried loudly otherwise.

"Nai, I’m hurting, that wretched swine hit me, Nai, you must hit her back, beat that wretched swine to death." Qi Dabao glared hatefully at Hua Jin, gritting his teeth with a look like he wanted to devour her.

"What did you say? Who are you calling a wretched swine? Who do you want to hit to death?" Criticizing him was one thing, but criticizing his daughter was another. He treasured his daughter dearly, and Hua Chengtian couldn’t stand it, even if it was a relative’s child. He started towards Qi Dabao, his eyes coldly fixed on him.

Old Man Qi realized it was too late; aware of his son-in-law’s dense affection towards his, ahem, daughter, he knew trouble was afoot and hastily stepped in to diffuse the situation.

"Chengtian, Chengtian, don’t be mad, don’t be mad. Dabao’s just a child, doesn’t know anything. Later, I’ll surely teach him well." freewēbnoveℓ.com

He then turned to Qi Dabao: "What nonsense are you spouting, Dabao? No wretched swine, that’s your own cousin. Next time I hear you prattling, watch out."

Turning back to Hua Chengtian: "Chengtian, the child’s ignorant; don’t take it to heart, don’t stoop to his level," he said, glancing at Qi Dabao, and even gave Old Woman Qi a hard look.

"My daughter was cherished and held dear as she grew up, and if anyone dares to make her unhappy, they’re making me unhappy, even if it’s a kid, I’ll still teach a lesson. Dad..." Hua Chengtian looked at Old Man Qi, "A crooked tree needs straightening, and children are the same. Dabao’s already in his teens, and being this arrogant won’t work. Family might let it slide, but outside, no one will indulge him, and the loss will be great. Don’t you think I’m right, Dad?"

Even Qi was fuming silently, seeing her child’s father intervene, she restrained herself from speaking. Though she’d never scolded her daughter growing up, Qi Dabao did not hesitate to hurl wretched swine from his mouth, and he even wanted to beat her to death, truly despicable.
