Disaster Apocalypse: Farming, Family, and My Hidden Secret Space-Chapter 84. Unexpected Visitor
Chapter 84: 84. Unexpected Visitor
The two brothers of the Hua family also looked at their mother, as they were very interested in this unfamiliar thing.
Qi Shi almost couldn’t help but glare at her youngest son, who was incessantly curious.
The child seems to be too talkative!
If a sapling is not pruned, it won’t grow properly. Likewise, a person needs to be regularly disciplined, Qi Shi squinted her eyes.
Hua Jin, the one responsible for this, sat obediently on the side, silently lighting a lamp for her clueless father.
"You’ll know if it’s good to eat in a while, wait," Qi Shi said to the children, facing their gazes.
In truth, she also wanted to know how it tasted. To prevent her son from asking further, Qi Shi rarely showed a look of impatience.
Indeed, none of the kids dared to ask more, even the second brother Hua wanted to ask but held it back.
Seeing the children were silenced, Qi Shi glanced at her daughter again.
The child brought the item back without letting her mother know; it’s not like she should know nothing at all.
Hua Jin felt a bit guilty; now, under her mother’s gaze, she instinctively acted obediently. Her pleading eyes softened Qi Shi’s heart, leaving no trace of displeasure.
As the sweet potato aroma gradually wafted in the air, everyone’s attention was drawn again.
All eyes were fixed on the sweet potatoes on the brazier. The sweet potatoes were sizzling and emitting oil. Xiao Si couldn’t resist leaning closer and even wanted to reach out to grab one, only to be slapped away by Qi Shi.
"Too hot for you," Qi Shi glared at her mischievous son.
Didn’t you see your sister using tongs to turn them?
"Dad, Mom, where did you get these sweet potatoes? They smell so good and look delicious," the second brother Hua couldn’t help but ask, expressing his curiosity.
This time, Qi Shi didn’t plan to speak and instead looked at the head of the family, leaving the opportunity to speak to the children’s father.
"Ahem," Hua Chengtian cleared his throat. "It was something I stumbled upon at a general store last time I went to town with your sister. It’s said to be something from overseas, brought in by chance with the shipments. Your sister found it intriguing and bought it back; unexpectedly, it tastes quite good." As he spoke, Hua Chengtian couldn’t resist sniffing the sweet potato aroma wafting from his daughter’s mouth.
This aroma... should be more than just "quite good."
So that’s how it is, the second brother Hua understood. No wonder they hadn’t seen it before; it was something from overseas.
The scholar at the academy had also mentioned that there are many unknown things overseas that are difficult to bring over. Seeing his sister’s good luck in discovering such a novelty in town, the second brother Hua looked at his sister with envy.
The eldest brother Hua, observing his father’s gaze towards his sister, sensed that there might be something unknown between their father and her.
Hua Jin admired her father, thinking his excuse was flawless. Truly the head of the family, his mind worked quickly. When the sweet potatoes were ready, she’d give her father the largest one.
As the sweet potato aroma became more intense, soon another incense stick worth of time had passed.
The entire sweet potato turned golden brown, sizzling with buttery oil. Just smelling it was enough to make one’s mouth water.
Hua Jin used tongs to check, finding them very soft. Her eyes lit up, knowing they were ready to eat.
Just as she was about to hand one to her grandparents, the sound of knocking came from the front door. Hua Jin paused, and like everyone else, looked towards the door.
Thinking who could be visiting in such snowy weather, wasn’t the cold a deterrent?
Old Hua thought more about it, and his first thought, seeing the snow falling, was that something might have happened. He quickly signaled his son to open the door while wrapping his cotton-padded coat more tightly around himself, heading out together.
Madame Hua and Qi Shi naturally couldn’t just sit still either.
At this time, only Hua Jin, Xiao Si, and the two brothers were left in the main room. Besides Xiao Si, the other three were also drawn to the entrance, peeking through the crack of the door.
"Who is it?" Hua Chengtian called out while walking, a bit worried in his heart, his steps quick.
When he opened the door, he was stunned, because it wasn’t what he had expected. A horse carriage was parked outside, and a man dressed like a steward, looking somewhat familiar, was standing there.
The steward looked excitedly at Hua Chengtian, "Excuse me, does Master Hua remember this old servant?"
Hua Chengtian had never been called "Master" by anyone; as he was about to wave it off, the person on the carriage started moving.
"Uncle Hua."
The call "Uncle Hua" finally made Hua Chengtian understand why the steward looked familiar. It was someone from Mr. Luo’s entourage, specifically the person who had knelt to thank him that night.
"Mr. Luo," Hua Chengtian said with a slight smile, noting that although Luo Song still looked a bit pale, he seemed much healthier, and he quickly went to greet him.
"In such cold weather, what brings Mr. Luo here? Come in quickly to warm yourself up."
Saying this, Hua Chengtian hurriedly stepped aside to remove the threshold blocking the door and, along with the steward, helped pull the carriage into the courtyard.
Entering, he called out to his wife, "Children’s mother, hurry and boil some hot water; Yun Ao’s classmate has come."
Upon hearing this, Qi Shi quickly responded and went to the kitchen.
Old Hua and his wife curiously watched the young man wearing a fur cloak walk in from the entrance. Their son seemed somewhat familiar with their grandson’s classmate, and the young man treated their son differently. Particularly, the behavior of the servants around him was noticeably respectful.
With these doubts, Old Hua smiled warmly at the guest, as visitors are guests after all.
"This must be Grandpa Hua," Luo Song, being observant, hurried forward to pay respects upon seeing the two elders standing in the yard.
"Greetings, Grandpa Hua and Grandma Hua."
He performed a formal junior’s salute, which Old Hua quickly tried to waive him off.
"No need, no need. In the countryside, there’s no such formality. Young master, please come inside quickly."
"Yes, yes," Granny Hua also nodded quickly; it was too cold outside.
"It’s proper. My name is Luo Song, and Grandpa Hua can just call me Luo Song."
Saying this, Luo Song made another bow. The politeness of this young man made Old Hua a bit uncomfortable, only nodding in agreement, and then he turned to his son, waiting for his explanation.
Meanwhile, the steward was leading two other attendants to unload the goods from the carriage, and soon there was a large pile.
Seeing that it was Luo Song, the eldest brother Hua quickly walked out, puzzled at the large pile of gifts in the courtyard and looked towards Luo Song for answers.
"Brother Luo, what is this?"
Not just him, but the old couple in the courtyard also shared the same confusion. However, the courtyard wasn’t the place for talking, so they quickly led everyone into the main hall.
Inside, Hua Jin’s eyes were shining brightly, especially when she saw the large pile of goods in the courtyard.
She initially thought she had misjudged her brother’s classmate as ungrateful, but apparently, she was mistaken.
It seemed he was busy recovering from his health, and only now did he have the time to come by.
Although saving someone doesn’t necessarily mean expecting something in return, there is still the desire for the saved person to be grateful. Irrespective of the quantity, the spiritual gratification at least is worthwhile.
Moreover, she had used a few pills from her space. Without those, it might have been a matter of life and death, which can’t be quantified by mere goods.
Seeing people coming over, Hua Jin quickly pulled Xiao Si up and didn’t forget to push the brazier to the side to avoid blocking the way.
