Chapter 117: Rune Magic

"Also, since the bodies of mages are so weak in combat, in a fight mage versus mage, the one who hits first wins because the body of a mage cannot withstand an offensive spell at the same stage as the mage casting it. To avoid these two issues, every mage should have in their spell collection a blocking spell and a spell that either teleports them a bit away or greatly increases their speed so that the mage can keep distance from a warrior."

"We’re now moving on to Rune Magic, which I guess many of you don’t know, so I’ll start from the basics. I’ll tell you just a little about it because the lecture will be over in a moment. Rune Magic consists of magical circles mostly used for more complex spells or rituals. That’s all I’ll tell you about it — partly because the lecture is ending, and partly because I don’t want to steal my colleague’s job, who teaches Rune Magic." She said and glanced at the students.

"We have just a few seconds left. In the next lecture, we’ll specifically focus on poison magic. This was the introductory lecture, which is the foundation for understanding Elemental Magic. You may go." said Sora, and the students began to leave.

Flain analyzed the information he had gathered on the way. He was glad he came to the academy because he had already learned a bunch of important things here that could fundamentally change his future, even though many of them don’t apply to him because of his system. Also, his slaves Aran and Ivy were learning it together with him, because they saw through Flain’s eyes and heard through his ears.

Flain wondered where his mana core was as a Spine Stalker, because once he found out, he would consider it a weak spot and try to prevent enemies from hitting him there.

Without a mana core, his world would collapse, and his life would have no meaning if he had to stay the same strength forever. He would have to acquire an identical mana core to the one that was destroyed and find some doctor who could surgically implant a mana core into a skeleton, which already sounded like a very difficult task, and actually making it happen would sound even harder.

In the hallway, Flain looked out the window. Even though it was already 20:25, it was still light out. Flain assumed it was spring or summer; he couldn’t feel it exactly since he couldn’t feel temperature. Farther from the academy was a large forest where Flain saw large black rabbits with two horns on their heads running between the trees, looking like they were hunting.

Flain sighed. It tore at him that he was doing nothing during the break; he would’ve preferred to train, but it made no sense. It takes an hour to gain EXP, which he noticed, and if he interrupts training, he has 10 minutes to return to it, otherwise the training timer resets. So walking to his room and training there for 15 minutes would be completely meaningless for him.

Flain spent the remaining time sitting on a bench in the center of the academy, thinking about what Rune Magic might be and whether he would make use of it. Fifteen minutes passed, and it was time for the last lecture of the day.

Flain walked up to the classroom where there was a crowd he joined. Flor and Itai were also there, and they asked him where he had been, and Flain replied that he had been resting on a bench.

The students rushed into the room and started sitting down.

"Hey, by the way, my Dark Magic professor was that old man who explained the room competition," said Itai as they sat down.

"My professor was some older woman," said Flain.

The students were whispering to each other about what they had learned about magic, but they quieted down when the teacher arrived.

He was a young, highly stylish man with short messy hair and deep green-gray eyes, which in certain lighting had a bluish-green hue. He wore a long black coat with burgundy embroidery. On his right eye, he had a monocle-like lens that looked like glasses for one eye.

"I am the Rune Magic teacher, Eryndor Aureli. Today we’ll focus on the basics of Rune Magic. Do you have any questions?" he asked briefly.

The students whispered among themselves.

"What do you have on your right eye?" one student asked.

Eryndor touched the lens.

"This? Well, it’s an artifact that slightly power up the rune circles I create," he said.

"Alright, let’s get to the lecture. I’ll explain the absolute basics because Rune Magic as a type of magic was officially recognized in the Empire of Light only 582 years ago, so not that many people know about it. I assume your Elemental Magic professor already told you a little about it, as they do every year, so I won’t repeat the things they said."

"Rune Magic consists of magical circles that produce different effects depending on how they’re drawn. The foundation of every circle is a core, and layers are added around it. When the circle is completed, the rune mage sends a bit of their mana into it to activate it. Upon activation, the circle produces its effect and is destroyed. That’s the reason why Rune Magic is usually not used in regular combat, because creating a magic circle takes time, so a mage with Elemental Magic would have already bombarded you. That’s why Rune Magic is mostly used for large-scale spells or rituals."

"There is also a way to make the circles so that they don’t get destroyed after use. The only way is to carve the magic circle into your arms so that scars remain on them," said Eryndor and rolled up his sleeves, revealing that his arms were entirely covered with scars in the shape of rune circles.

"Nothing else works, not even if you tattoo them. The magic circle always breaks. If you want to create circles on the body out of scars, it’s still very difficult — the scars must be in the exact shape of rune circles. So they have to be precisely carved, and then you wait for them to heal and leave a scar. With high probability, the circle won’t work, so you have to ask a doctor or supporter to erase the scar, and you can start over...
