Demon Tamer's Ascension-Chapter 13: Ex-Fiancé
His Ex-Fiancé was the very reason Alex chose to retaliate harshly against Noctis Crowe. Although she wasn’t the main reason he had gone in for the slap, he realized he didn’t truly care about it at all.
But what truly enraged him was this—the man who dared to speak ill of her was someone Alex had known since childhood, someone he had once trusted, and yet that bond had crumbled into nothing, all because one of them had failed to awaken.
Aristocrats, never change.
Even back then, Alex had already realized he would never have a chance with Rachel, so he let go, choosing not to be a burden any longer, and turned his attention to someone else, a girl from a commoner’s household, only to lose her as well just a few weeks later, because she unfortunately, ’Didn’t want to be part of a relationship at this time.’
While Alex and Cassie continued to walk to the center, she caught sight of Alex, her ex-fiancé.
When Alex was little, he was sentenced to become the fiancé of a third-degree noble’s daughter. That little girl back then had everything, and now, she had even more things that pleased every man around.
"No, that couldn’t be."
"She’s even hotter in person."
"The things I would do to bag that."
Whispers from across the terrain, called out loud, all of them piercing the women’s gaze.
She began walking over towards Alex and Cassie, after spotting him,
’Fuck me,’ he already knew what was about to happen. ’Please, someone, stop this from happening.’
Step. Step. Step.
Everyone around followed her elegant and precise movements. Cassie turned back to look, but Alex continued to move forward, pretending he didn’t see a thing.
"Well, let’s keep moving."
Cassie ignored him.
Alex shut his eyes tight, "Fuck, it’s happening."
She stood collinear behind Alex, arms crossed, her shiny silver armor gleaming from the sunlight above, while staring Alex down with a serious expression.
"Where have you been all this time?"
Cassie stepped back, "What?"
Alex turned around, raising his arms wide, surrendering, "Oh well, you got me, hehe."
He tried playing it off, but she remained unfazed.
"What happened to you?"
She walked closer, remaining calm all the way through.
Cassie’s heart throbbed rapidly, for a reason she couldn’t explain.
Alex looked back at her with a serious tone, "I failed my awakening and got tossed out of royalty. I’m not an aristocrat anymore. I don’t consider myself one, so there’s no need to force yourself into marrying me. They should’ve contacted your estate already."
’Too close.’
Alex looked down at her voluptuous chest, forgetting all sight of their situation for just a moment.
"But I never..."
’Way too close,’ her voice felt distant, and Alex lost sight of their situation.
"That never once..."
’Step away.’
Alex took a step back, averting his gaze to her beautiful face.
"Alex!"
He snapped out of it, looking directly at his ex.
"Oh, yeah, sorry, just lost in thought." He whispered, "Anyways, continue, because Cassie and I have to leave soon."
"Cassie?" She wondered out loud, "Oh, I see, it’s this beauty right here."
She walked up to her, eyes closed, with a sarcastic smile.
"Very nice to meet you," she bowed down respectfully, "You might have heard of me before, but my name is Rachel Ashfield, and as you can probably already tell by my last name, I’m a third-degree aristocrat."
Rachel proclaimed, straightening her posture once more.
"O-oh," Cassie stuttered, waving her hands, "I should be bowing down if anything, I’m so sorry about that."
Rachel looked down, "You truly are like a cauliflower. Manners, tone, beauty, possibly strength, you have it all."
"Thank you so much for the compliment. I truly don’t deserve such appreciation."
"Stop being so modest," Rachel then gave Alex a deadly gaze, "But trust me, that guy right there, he’s not worth your time. He’s a big idiot, a weirdo, and, most of all...
She leaned into Cassie’s ear, "He doesn’t respond to your feelings. Not. At. All."
Rachel backed away, and Cassie blushed. They turned around, awkwardly.
"What’s the matter with those two?" Alex wondered out loud.
"Probably just feigning for me, makes sense after all." Victor’s voice, unfortunately, came back.
"Yeah," Alex exhaled calmly, "Definitely because of that."
Rachel walked back over to Alex, "Anyways, where are you guys headed?"
"We’re off to sign off on some papers to enter the entrance exam a month from now." He responded, "We were just about to go, until a certain someone interrupted." Alex whistled to the side, laughing within his soul.
"Oh, what?" Her expression lightened up, "That’s exactly what I was about to do! Let’s go together."
Rachel then forcefully coughed twice, backing away, "I mean, if you really insist that I should go, I’ll come." She deepened her tone.
’Well, that’s how Rachel had always been after all. And now that she’s eighteen, I’m truly curious about the creature she got to tame.’
"I don’t mind it." Cassie walked back into the conversation, calmer now, "Why not?"
Alex nodded, "Sure thing."
Rached looked around consecutively until she had confirmation she was completely in the clear.
"Is it your guards again-?"
"Shhhh," Rachel put a finger on Alex’s lips, "They’re coming, let’s run quickly."
Cassie’s heart pulsed quickly again after seeing that scenario unravel before her, "What’s wrong with me?"
In that moment, Rachel effortlessly grabbed both Cassie and Alex, dragging them down a narrow path.
"Trust me, this is a shortcut. I know where to go."
While her tone seemed harsh and deep, Rachel’s demeanor truly said otherwise. She was just a kindhearted, sweet woman who acted tough on the outside, for some unknown reason.
On the way there, they skipped through a lot of civilians, tamed creatures, and buildings, trying to get to where they were supposed to sign up.
Rachel finally let them go, "Follow me."
They were completely in the clear, none of her guards around. BeastFall Capital was massive, so massive that some people joked it could pass its own continent. Every aristocrat lives somewhere within it, though most prefer the modern, suburban districts deeper within the region, far from the older heart of the city.
Now, they were all just in front of what seemed like a beautiful, largely built cathedral that reached up to the clouds.
"Let’s go sign in, shall we?"
