Demon CEO's Hidden Love: Mr Grayson Stole Me From My Abusive Husband-Chapter 337: Living On Borrowed Time
Brooke woke up the next morning to no news about Ethan, she checked all the gossip blogs and tabloids, but he hadn’t made any claims to refute or affirm their divorce scandal. "How strange, this is unlike him." she thought, as she went into the bathroom to get dressed.
She reached for her face wash, only to see she had run out. Naturally, she opened the top cabinet for a new bottle, but accidentally knocked over Thane’s medicine can. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
"Oh no!" she crouched down to pick it up. However, a frown painted her lips when she saw that the can was nearly empty.
She picked it up and tried to find a replacement in the cabinet, "It seems this is the last one." she noted, she went over to the trash can, and tossed out the empty cans sitting in the cabinet.
"Why’d he keep those empty cans there in the first place?" she wondered, while washing her face.
After she finished rinsing off, she concluded, "He must’ve been too busy with work to notice. He might not have had the time to change them either." she imagined.
To that advent, she took out her phone and called dr Anders. After the first ring, the doctor replied, something she found a bit surprising.
But what she found more surprising was her immediate response upon answering, "What’s wrong with the young master? Is he unwell?" she panicked.
Brooke raised a brow, "Why would he be unwell?" she questioned.
Dr Anders sighed, "Mrs Grayson, you of all people should not be asking that. He has to fly out in four days, every moment leading up to that is crucial." the woman explained.
Brooke was even more confused, "I know about his business trip, and that’s why I’m calling to ask about his prescription. I want to make an order for some more, what’s the quickest time it’ll take to get here?" she asked.
But the doctor did not seem to share her train of thought, "What? Wait a second, what medicine are you talking about?" she sounded genuinely confused, and it made Brooke start to get worried.
A bad feeling overwhelmed her.
"H-His drugs, the ones he always takes." she shakily replied.
"Can I see them?"
Brooke immediately took a picture of the medicine can in her hand and sent it to doctor Anders, her mind in a thousand places all at once.
What could be the problem now?
She got her answer in the next minute, and it wasn’t anything she was prepared to hear.
"Mrs Grayson! These medicines are poison to him!" Anders yelled, just as shocked, or even more shocked than Brooke was.
She got up from the bed, her heart racing, a sickening sensation settling in her stomach.
"What-"
"The young master knows his body is reacting negatively to these drugs. I warned him strictly against taking them!" she raised her voice, Brooke could hear her rushed breaths and panicked pacing.
The revelation left her completely stunned as well. "I don’t understand anything, why would he take them if they’re bad? Are you sure there isn’t some mistake-"
Anders cut her off. "Ever since his poisoning, his immune system has built an involuntary resistance to his usual medication. We’ve been trying to form an antidote for this, but it’s going to take months, if not years to perfect one. And the young master he..." she could not bring herself to finish speaking.
Brooke gripped her phone tightly, "He...what?"
She heard her sigh over the phone. "He doesn’t have that much time. Truth be told, he’s supposed to be here, bed ridden and under severe observation. That medicine is the only one that works as a temporary pain killer. But even you can guess it will have adverse long term effects." In clearer words, she told her, "He’s on borrowed time, Brooke, and those pills are leading him faster to his grave."
***********
Luther groaned when he caught sight of his captor, and not the usual guard who came in with food and water.
"Why are you back? I already told you, I don’t know anything about Ethan." he hissed, "Let me go already!" he demanded.
He had repeated the same thing yesterday, until his captor was frustrated enough to leave. He expected no different today, soon, he would realize that keeping him was pointless. Or better yet, he would slip up and make some mistake, one that would give him his golden chance to run away.
Thane signaled one of his men forward.
"Yes, young master?" the guard asked, his head lowered.
"Bring him to me."
The guard nodded, and immediately unstrapped Luther from the bed, and forced him to kneel before Thane.
"What is this now? Am I getting beheaded?" he laughed from his stomach.
In an unequivocal tone, Thane instructed him, "Break his right arm, if he doesn’t answer my question."
"Yes, young master." the guard answered with no hesitation whatsoever.
Luther nervously chuckled, his armpits drenched in sweat, "Is this some sort of new intimidation tactic, because I won’t fall for-"
Thane cut him off with a question, "Tell me what you know about Ethan Halton, something he wouldn’t even whisper in prayer." He demanded.
Luther gulped, was this man serious about having his arm broken? Was it all just a bluff?
"Nice try, but if you wanted me hurt you would’ve done it-" midway through his assertion, Thane waved at his guard, and in one swift movement, he grabbed Luther’s left arm and snapped it!
"Aah!" he shouted, wide eyed and trembling. He tried to escape, but the guard pinned him to the ground, leaving no room for escape.
Over his pained cries, Thane said, "Your left leg is next. So, if you want to become crippled, I advise you think carefully before answering my next question."
Giving him no time to rest, Thane asked him once again.
"Tell me, what is it you know about Ethan Halton, that you’re willing to lose an arm over?"
